Fandom High Graduation Ceremony, Class of 2015, Early Saturday Evening [Part 2]

As the last new graduate sat down with their diploma, a roaring noise could be heard in the distance. The noise quickly got louder, and then it wasn't so distant at all as dragons began to swarm around the lawn.

Some of the dragons were real, with scales and tails and fire in their breath. Following in their wake were smaller, squishier dragons, in a variety of tasty jello flavors.

As the dragons descended upon the graduates, the Fandom graduation protocols kicked in, and an invisible barrier came down to separate the graduates from the rest of the audience.

Good luck, graduates. Hopefully there were some brave knight types among you!

Well. Not only was Sparkle slightly scorched and covered in Jello, but he was slightly scorched, covered in Jello, and soaked, now.

"C'mon," he groused, wet hair clinging to his face. "They couldn't have turned the sprinklers on when we were being attacked with fire and water-soluble gelatin monsters? I'M NOT GOING TO MISS YOU, FANDOM."

"I'm trying to figure out whether it would've been a good idea to get you a bigger blaster or not," Atton said casually, hands in his pockets as he strolled towards Sparkle. "I mean, on the one hand, bigger holes. On the other, the splashback probably would've gotten bigger and jello-y-er." Beat. "Told you that stuff was evil."

"But still delicious," Sparkle declared, making a face at his blaster, gummed up with jello and dripping wet like the rest of him. Sigh. "This just means I'm going to eat it vengefully from here on in, you know."

"And then eventually it'll boil back up to try and kill you," Atton said. "Don't provoke the cycle of vengeance, Sparks."

He was going to put off congratulating Sparkle for as long as possible.

Hey, the longer Atton put it off, the longer Sparkle could pretend it wasn't an issue, himself.

"We'll see how well they get their revenge after I've eaten them all," he decided. "Extinct species don't fight back so good."

Atton let out a snort. "Oh, take it from me, there's always one surviving member," he said. "And you'll be, like, thirty, and suddenly it's beating down your door. 'You killed my grandmother! And my uncle! And my cousin!'"

"And I'll yell back, 'And they were delicious!'"

That wild Jello wouldn't know what had hit it.

"And then it'll eat you, and you'll probably give it indigestion, and you'll be dead and responsible for the destruction of an entire species," Atton said, "You monster."

Yeah, that was totally likely to happen in nice, safe Canada.

"At least I'll have left my mark in the world. My great revenge for Grad 2015 will be swift and thorough."

Take that, Jello dragons. Take that.

"And still delicious. I will die in a world of deliciousness. When I go, I want to become Jello salad. Put that in my will."

"I'm not putting that in your will," Atton said immediately. "Because that's disgusting, Sparks. I mean, look at you right now."

Hannibal wasn't there immediately when the fight finished; he took the time to go to his office and fetch a bag first.

From which he was now pulling a large towel. "Congratulations." On graduating, on the speech, on the dragon-fighting.

"Oh my god you're my hero," Sparkle declared, making a reach for that towel. Yes, please and thank you, yes. "Thanks."

A beat.

"Dragons. I can add 'dragonslayer' to the resume that nobody's going to believe, now. That's kind of awesome. I think?"

He wasn't completely sure.

"It is," Hannibal agreed with a grin. He passed over the towel and showed that he had a button-down blue shirt in the bag, too, for once the worst of the jello was off. "Almost as impressive as your speech."

"You liked that?" Sparkle gave a wry-but-thankful smile as he started toweling himself off. "I don't know where like half of that speech came from. It would have been way easier to get up there and spend like fifteen minutes just bitching about how glad I'll be to get off this stupid island, anyway."

... That was true enough.

"Giving up usually is easier," Hannibal acknowledged. "But thriving is much more rewarding, don't you think?"

"People who give up aren't usually around long enough to figure out that they could have had a reward," Sparkle noted, nodding a little and leaning forward to try to towel out his hair. "It's a dead end."

"Yes." Hannibal gave Sparkle an arch look. "Now remember that, the next time you think that your future has been predetermined."

"Heh." Sparkle at least had the grace to look sheepish for a moment. "I'm working on that. There's a difference between giving up and being realistic, I get that."

Hannibal chuckled. "If there is one thing that Fandom has taught me in my time here, it's that 'realistic' is highly relative. Don't let it define you."

"Define me, never," Sparkle decided. "I'm way too invested in white lies and tall tales for 'real' to get to dictate who I am. But, you know... inform me, sure. I'm not going to get a healthy dose of the island's stupid brand of whimsy once I'm gone. I can't let myself pretend out there is anything like here was. That'd be a great way to go down hard and fast."
