Fandom High Graduation Ceremony, Class of 2015, Early Saturday Evening [Part 2]

As the last new graduate sat down with their diploma, a roaring noise could be heard in the distance. The noise quickly got louder, and then it wasn't so distant at all as dragons began to swarm around the lawn.

Some of the dragons were real, with scales and tails and fire in their breath. Following in their wake were smaller, squishier dragons, in a variety of tasty jello flavors.

As the dragons descended upon the graduates, the Fandom graduation protocols kicked in, and an invisible barrier came down to separate the graduates from the rest of the audience.

Good luck, graduates. Hopefully there were some brave knight types among you!

"I'm trying to figure out whether it would've been a good idea to get you a bigger blaster or not," Atton said casually, hands in his pockets as he strolled towards Sparkle. "I mean, on the one hand, bigger holes. On the other, the splashback probably would've gotten bigger and jello-y-er." Beat. "Told you that stuff was evil."

"But still delicious," Sparkle declared, making a face at his blaster, gummed up with jello and dripping wet like the rest of him. Sigh. "This just means I'm going to eat it vengefully from here on in, you know."

"And then eventually it'll boil back up to try and kill you," Atton said. "Don't provoke the cycle of vengeance, Sparks."

He was going to put off congratulating Sparkle for as long as possible.

Hey, the longer Atton put it off, the longer Sparkle could pretend it wasn't an issue, himself.

"We'll see how well they get their revenge after I've eaten them all," he decided. "Extinct species don't fight back so good."

Atton let out a snort. "Oh, take it from me, there's always one surviving member," he said. "And you'll be, like, thirty, and suddenly it's beating down your door. 'You killed my grandmother! And my uncle! And my cousin!'"

"And I'll yell back, 'And they were delicious!'"

That wild Jello wouldn't know what had hit it.

"And then it'll eat you, and you'll probably give it indigestion, and you'll be dead and responsible for the destruction of an entire species," Atton said, "You monster."

Yeah, that was totally likely to happen in nice, safe Canada.

"At least I'll have left my mark in the world. My great revenge for Grad 2015 will be swift and thorough."

Take that, Jello dragons. Take that.

"And still delicious. I will die in a world of deliciousness. When I go, I want to become Jello salad. Put that in my will."

"I'm not putting that in your will," Atton said immediately. "Because that's disgusting, Sparks. I mean, look at you right now."

"I'm already halfway there! It'd be easy!"

And disgusting. Let there be no mistake about that.

Atton rolled his eyes. "I keep having to say this to you," he said, "but aim for the stars, kid."

Coming back here had been a huge mistake, he realized. He'd been trying to avoid the fact he was going to miss Sparkle something huge.

"I'm going to aim for at least the lower stratosphere," Sparkle decreed, and then grinned at him in silence for a moment.

...

Yeah, he had to ask.

"So... we still up for our weekend training things? After I get back, my parole officer isn't going to like it, but it isn't like he can track where I go if I take portals anyway."

Oh, that wasn't fair, Sparks.

The Ebon Hawk was still full up with all of Atton's stuff, there was somebody else's haircut hiding under his baseball cap, and there was an inborn mulish desire to always be the leaving party yelling with annoyance in the back of Atton's brain.

Atton did not do anything stupid, like hug Sparkle while he was sticky and ridiculous, because after the last few weeks of his life, that wouldn't end well. He just shrugged, and scratched at the back of his neck.

"Sure," he said.

Pfff. As if Sparkle had ever played fair.

"Good," he decided, smiling a little in relief. "I need my weekly nerf fix anyway."

Yep. All about the nerf, here, because these two goons weren't even remotely sentimental, or anything.

"And maybe one day, you can hope to be something more than just completely scrawny," Atton said, "Courtesy of the food budget of the Jedi Temple."

Not. Sentimental. At all.

He still hadn't congratulated Sparkle yet. He still didn't want to.

That was just fine by Sparkle. Congratulations only made it official, and even if he'd gotten up and said a stupid speech and everything, whatever, nothing counted until it was 'goodbye' anyway.

"The food budget and you being a total hardass, you mean?"

Atton's training regimen was not intended for sane persons who liked themselves even a little bit.

Hey, the regimen reflected the guy who came up with it. Sparkle should've seen that coming.

"It's sad what you think constitutes 'being a total hardass'," Atton said. "You're not used to anything. Lounging around on sofas all your life."

"Yeah, but, like, some of those were really shitty sofas. With springs coming out and everything."

Playing along was the thing to do, here. Sparkle completely planned to do exactly that, yes.

"Ah, no," Atton said, with really over-the-top concern, "Did you get a bruise?"

Playing along was the best idea, yes. Cracking in the middle of a graduation ceremony was not high up on Atton's list of things he wanted to do today.

"Right on the ass," Sparkle lamented, sticking out his bottom lip in a pout. "It was terrible, man. Sitting was pretty much the worst. For weeks."

This had never actually happened, for the record.

"I'm not going to make the obvious joke, because you're still technically a student until sunset," Atton decided. "But you're a wimp, Sparks. A wimp who looks like he took on a jello dragon and lost very badly."

"I'm a wimp who took on a jello dragon and who is still doing way better than the dragon is," Sparkle decided, sticking his nose into the air. "Don't let appearances fool you, here."

He had totally destroyed that thing!

... After a bit!

"Can you even walk?" Atton wondered. "Because you look like you should be sticking to the floor, here."

"I'm not hurt," Sparkle declared. "... But I am a little sludgy. I might end up hosing myself off before I go back into the dorms. Whoever thought up jello wrestling has, like, either my greatest respect, or else I'm going to side-eye them forever."

Atton let out a snort. Then he shook his head.

"Well, when you're all hosed down, you're welcome to grab breakfast at my place tomorrow if you want," he said casually, "and otherwise I'll see you next weekend."

Look, he knew himself by now. If he asked Sparkle specifically when he was leaving, some part of his brain would get contrarian, and he'd be off the island well before that time, whenever it was.
