Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

Were you a veteran Fandom resident? Did you finish getting your brain broken by your sibling and/or buddy? Did you just want to sit down to recover from the shuttle ride? If so, then there were plenty of tables and chairs set up across the lawn just waiting to be filled!

[This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Look, you have a buffet table with chocolate on it, and what you're going to end up with is an Arendelle princess with a plate of carefully arranged fudge and brownies and cookies, attempting to eat them with a fork.

With a fork.

Because it wouldn't do to get any on her gloves, and Elsa wasn't going to be taking those off any time soon, thank you.

"So... um. Hi."

Was that Barry looking awkward because he was bat-shit crazy for most of the week?

Yes.

"Lot of fucking chocolate around, huh?"

Awkward.

"There's some, yes," Elsa agreed, delicately slicing a piece of brownie away with the edge of her fork. "It's an impressive assortment, for a school function."

Well, one of them was awkward. Elsa was all about the regal poise, today, wearing a serene smile as she speared the piece of brownie with the fork maybe a little too forcefully before taking a bite.

"Feeling better? You're still yourself after yesterday?"

No honking or random siren sounds, she had noticed.

"Um. Yep," Barry said scratching the back of his head. He looked and felt totally uncomfortable. "No gummi bears. No rainbows. I can swear as much as I fucking want and I haven't made any noises. I guess."

He took a deep breath.

"I just wanted to apologize. I didn't look for help when I fucking should have and by the time I needed it I was too bat-shit crazy to do anything about it."

Sometimes, Elsa had her petty moments. They were few and far between, and extremely subtle if they were visible enough to even be noticed, but they were there.

Today's came in the form of taking a few extra seconds to savor this next bite of brownie before replying. Sorry, Barry. You needed to sweat a little more, apparently.

"It won't happen again?"

And now Barry was pulling on his hair a little. "Yeeeeesssss," he said now feeling awkward uncomfortable and humiliated. "I'm sorry. It's... hard for me to accept any kind of help. And I was fucking scared too. I never get scared."

Re: General Mingling [Fall 2014]

[identity profile] iceolatedqueen.livejournal.com 2014-08-23 04:43 pm (UTC)(link)
"We were all scared," Elsa replied, sighing and setting her plate down to finally actually look at him. "We were all afraid for you, Barry. And we were there for you, trying to help."

She sighed again, and then gave the ground beside her a little pat.

"Nobody can fix every problem they come across on their own. There's no shame in having limits, even if you are a genius."

Re: General Mingling [Fall 2014]

[identity profile] notaweenie.livejournal.com 2014-08-23 05:02 pm (UTC)(link)
"That's was my fucking problem," Barry said with a sigh as he took a seat next to Elsa. "You got to fucking understand that this was the first time I ran into something I couldn't fix. I've stopped aliens, interdimensional barbarians, government black op agents... None of them could fucking stop me. Right before I came here? My friends back home died and I found a way to bring them back. So this was new to me. And fucking hard to accept. I'm trying though. I really am."

He paused a moment before continuing.

"The other part was I thought I was just fucking losing my mind. I always worry about that. I always thing one day a synapse is going to blow and I'm going to go fucking looney toons."

Re: General Mingling [Fall 2014]

[identity profile] iceolatedqueen.livejournal.com 2014-08-23 05:26 pm (UTC)(link)
"Well, you'll be in good company if you do lose your mind, at least," Elsa noted, a little wryly. "I think what it's going to boil down to here is that... there aren't always going to be easy answers. That's life, no matter who you are. It's going to be big and oppressive and sometimes even terrifying, and it'll sneak up on you when you least expect it and rough you up a little."

Elsa was well aware that she was probably not the best role model when it came to leaning on loved ones for emotional support. She was going to ignore that fact like the wind anyway.

"But look at it this way... you made it through this time. Not because of something you did yourself, no, but it shouldn't always have to be, either. The other weekend, when you were a dog and we were losing people left and right to that carnival, that wasn't something that the carnival's victims could have fixed on their own, either. And... look at some of the people who got caught in it. Some of them are the best at what they do, too."

She had no idea if she was being reassuring or not, now.

"The point is... if something goes horribly wrong and you can't fix it... hang in there. Let us help you. There are people who love you, and they're not going to let you suffer through it alone."

[identity profile] notaweenie.livejournal.com 2014-08-23 05:49 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yeah. Well at least they got hugs," Barry joked. "I got fucking tied up and sat on."

Okay, the sitting on part wasn't too bad.

"But I'll remember next time. And I'm so fucking sorry for putting you through that."

Re: General Mingling [Fall 2014]

[identity profile] iceolatedqueen.livejournal.com 2014-08-23 05:55 pm (UTC)(link)
"You know I wouldn't sit on just anybody," Elsa replied. It was almost like teasing, if you squinted! "And... it's fine. I do understand feeling like you have to handle all of your problems alone, you know."

Maybe more than most people here did, in fact.

"Yeah. I just sorry for all the shit you guys had to go through," he said quietly. "And if there's anyone who gets how it feels to be isolated... Well you and I get that."

He paused.

"Is there a way to make it up to you?"

[identity profile] iceolatedqueen.livejournal.com 2014-08-23 06:12 pm (UTC)(link)
"Just promise me that if you get scared like that again, you'll accept the help that people are offering you," Elsa replied. "I was upset, but it was less about the crazy things you were doing and more because I wanted to do something for you, we all did, and you wouldn't have any of it. You... you weren't the only one left feeling helpless, you know?"

"Aren't you feeling a little hot all bundled up, or is it just me all the time?" Johnny asked as he walked up. Because of course he did.

Human Torch, meet Ice Princess. Elsa actually gave a soft laugh and a smile as she looked up at the boy - a new face, she noted - and shook her head.

"You know, I've never actually had that problem?" In pretty much any sense, for the most part. "But if you're feeling exceptionally stifled, I have heard rumors before about it being customary for boys to take off their shirts at welcome picnics."

Not that she was suggesting he ought to, or anything. At all. She had a boyfriend and she was perfectly happy with her plate of chocolate and she was being flirted with, wasn't she? Dear lord, when in the world had she learned to handle being flirted with without falling apart in a bundle of stuttering awkwardness?

She'd blame Joker.

"I would, but I've got an impact suit on under this stuff," Johnny said, lifting his shirt up to show off what looked like a blue wetsuit. "So you wouldn't get much from me showing off, sadly enough. I wish somebody had told me about that before now so I could have prepared."

"Well, now you'll know for the next semester," Elsa decided, giving Johnny's blue underclothes a curious look before lifting her chin and raising an eyebrow up at him. "How are you with the cold?"

Because January.

"It doesn't bother me much. Like I said, I'm always hot," Johnny said. Just to show off, he let his hand start on fire.

Re: General Mingling [Fall 2014]

[identity profile] iceolatedqueen.livejournal.com 2014-08-23 07:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Please excuse Elsa for jumping a little, Johnny. It wasn't that she'd never seen a person light their hand on fire, but she still wasn't terribly used to people just showing it off like that, casually, out of the blue.

"That's quite the trick," she said after a moment, still staring at his hand, sounding a touch uncertain about it. "Is that normal, where you're from?"

Re: General Mingling [Fall 2014]

[identity profile] ultimatehottie.livejournal.com 2014-08-23 07:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Johnny waved his hand, dying the flame out. He didn't have to do that, he just liked to do it for show. "Completely unique. Except for the one girl who does exactly the same thing. And, of course, people have other powers. But in terms of the whole fire thing, it's just me and one other person."

"... That I know of."

Re: General Mingling [Fall 2014]

[identity profile] iceolatedqueen.livejournal.com 2014-08-23 07:41 pm (UTC)(link)
"So, powers are normal there?" Elsa sounded a little wistful about that, actually. Probably not the reaction that Johnny had been going for, granted. "There are quite a few people here with powers as well, actually. I've seen at least one person who can create fire with their hands before you."

If anything, the fact that other people had powers actually made Johnny feel better. He was used to people having powers.

Fire powers, on the other hand. "Well, that last part is kind of disappointing. Fire really should be more unique, you know."

[identity profile] iceolatedqueen.livejournal.com 2014-08-23 07:53 pm (UTC)(link)
"Apparently fire and ice are both more common than I would have guessed," Elsa replied, slipping her glove off and reaching for her bottle of water, giving it a shake so that he could hear the water sloshing around inside. "Catch."

She held it for a moment more, and then lobbed the bottle of ice up to him in a careful sort of underhand before slipping her glove back on.

She was trying to get a little bit better about not being so secretive about her powers. Here on the island, there seemed to be little point in hiding.

"Oh, hey, I've got a buddy back home who can do that," Johnny said, catching the bottle and raising his temperature to thaw the ice. "But he's an idiot and not nearly as good-looking as you."

Dammit, Elsa was still helplessly prone to blushing when she was complimented outright like that.

"Oh, is he?" Yep. Blushing. "Well, hopefully you won't find the people here to be too terribly idiotic. I'm Elsa, by the way."
