Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

Were you a veteran Fandom resident? Did you finish getting your brain broken by your sibling and/or buddy? Did you just want to sit down to recover from the shuttle ride? If so, then there were plenty of tables and chairs set up across the lawn just waiting to be filled!

[This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Human Torch, meet Ice Princess. Elsa actually gave a soft laugh and a smile as she looked up at the boy - a new face, she noted - and shook her head.

"You know, I've never actually had that problem?" In pretty much any sense, for the most part. "But if you're feeling exceptionally stifled, I have heard rumors before about it being customary for boys to take off their shirts at welcome picnics."

Not that she was suggesting he ought to, or anything. At all. She had a boyfriend and she was perfectly happy with her plate of chocolate and she was being flirted with, wasn't she? Dear lord, when in the world had she learned to handle being flirted with without falling apart in a bundle of stuttering awkwardness?

She'd blame Joker.

"I would, but I've got an impact suit on under this stuff," Johnny said, lifting his shirt up to show off what looked like a blue wetsuit. "So you wouldn't get much from me showing off, sadly enough. I wish somebody had told me about that before now so I could have prepared."

"Well, now you'll know for the next semester," Elsa decided, giving Johnny's blue underclothes a curious look before lifting her chin and raising an eyebrow up at him. "How are you with the cold?"

Because January.

"It doesn't bother me much. Like I said, I'm always hot," Johnny said. Just to show off, he let his hand start on fire.

Please excuse Elsa for jumping a little, Johnny. It wasn't that she'd never seen a person light their hand on fire, but she still wasn't terribly used to people just showing it off like that, casually, out of the blue.

"That's quite the trick," she said after a moment, still staring at his hand, sounding a touch uncertain about it. "Is that normal, where you're from?"

Johnny waved his hand, dying the flame out. He didn't have to do that, he just liked to do it for show. "Completely unique. Except for the one girl who does exactly the same thing. And, of course, people have other powers. But in terms of the whole fire thing, it's just me and one other person."

"... That I know of."

"So, powers are normal there?" Elsa sounded a little wistful about that, actually. Probably not the reaction that Johnny had been going for, granted. "There are quite a few people here with powers as well, actually. I've seen at least one person who can create fire with their hands before you."

If anything, the fact that other people had powers actually made Johnny feel better. He was used to people having powers.

Fire powers, on the other hand. "Well, that last part is kind of disappointing. Fire really should be more unique, you know."

"Apparently fire and ice are both more common than I would have guessed," Elsa replied, slipping her glove off and reaching for her bottle of water, giving it a shake so that he could hear the water sloshing around inside. "Catch."

She held it for a moment more, and then lobbed the bottle of ice up to him in a careful sort of underhand before slipping her glove back on.

She was trying to get a little bit better about not being so secretive about her powers. Here on the island, there seemed to be little point in hiding.

"Oh, hey, I've got a buddy back home who can do that," Johnny said, catching the bottle and raising his temperature to thaw the ice. "But he's an idiot and not nearly as good-looking as you."

Dammit, Elsa was still helplessly prone to blushing when she was complimented outright like that.

"Oh, is he?" Yep. Blushing. "Well, hopefully you won't find the people here to be too terribly idiotic. I'm Elsa, by the way."

"Johnny. Nice to meet you," Johnny said. "And I call him an idiot as a term of endearment. And fact. If everyone here is as dumb as him, I'll both like a lot of people and worry for the fate of this school."

"And I'm sure this school has far more to worry about than a bad case of the 'idiotic' going around," Elsa mused. "Have you had a chance to look at the classes this semester?"

She had been registered for a terrain class. A terrain class! Which would come in handy if she ever needed to flee up the side of a mountain or something, but what were the odds of that happening?

"I'm already signed up and everything," Johnny said. "There aren't a lot of normal classes on there."

"I don't think most people around here could agree on a definition of 'normal' if you got them all into the same room and asked them to," Elsa replied. "What's normal where you're from?"

"Well, at a normal school, math, English, history, that kind of stuff," Johnny said. "But I'm from a family of science supergeniuses, so my tutors been more science-heavy."

"Not so many about spying and destiny."

"Did you sign up for either of those? I'm in the destiny class, myself. I know the teacher, sort of. The spying class..."

Well. Pam and Cheryl.

"... I didn't have room on my timetable for that one."

Yeeees. Yes, that was the reason.

"Nope. I don't care much about destiny and why would I want to be a spy and not show off what I can do?" Johnny asked. "I'm in Meditation, History, Heroic Tales since I think I know that teacher, and the Sex class." Big surprise there.

And there went Elsa, blushing again.

"If you're thinking of Thor, with the hammer and the lightning, then you're probably right," she offered, nodding her confirmation about Heroic tales. "And I'm in the Sex class, too. As well as Gourmet Cooking and Terrain."

So, really, the only class that made any sense at all for her schedule was, in fact, the destiny one. She even sounded a little baffled as she listed off the rest of her schedule.

"Yeah, but I'm not sure he's the one I know. Alternate realities and all," Johnny said. "You've got an intersting schedule. I just picked th stuff that sounded easy or I was interested in." Like sex. Again, shock.

"I picked... Destiny. I have no idea how I wound up in these other classes. I wanted creative writing or history, honestly."

She kind of blamed the moose.

"That sort of thing happens pretty often around here, though."

"Good to know," Johnny said. "Well, if you ever need a study partner to help you get through the dating class, I'm available." See how he changed to the second word in the sex class's name? That's because he was a damn gentleman.

Elsa appreciated that! She appreciated that so much that she actually laughed a little, covering her mouth with one hand as she did so.

"I appreciate the offer, and I'll keep it in mind," she replied, nodding over to where Barry was sitting. "But I'm pretty sure Barry and I have the dating part covered."

And while they could both use a bit of improvement in the sex and self-confidence categories, they weren't in any hurry to do anything about the first, and the second was a work in progress.

"Well, if anything changes, keep me in mind. Fire and ice, could be a fun combo," Johnny said. He took rejection in stride. He was probably more fun than that Barry guy, though.

Well, he was probably less likely to get stabbed in the behind with a syringe wielded by an angry gremlin, at least.

"There's a joke about steam in there that I'm not even going to attempt to make," Elsa noted, smiling wryly. "But all of that aside, welcome to the island, and if you need any help finding anything or you have any questions about the place, feel free to ask."
