Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

Throughout the lawn, tables and chairs had been set up and scattered, some out in the bright, sunny center of everything, and some in the darker, more remote areas.

Eat up, folks! Don't let that food go to waste!

[OCD up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Now that she wasn't convinced the entire island was out to kidnap and experiment on her, Eleanor was far more relaxed about this whole 'picnic' thing. She was wearing one of the sundresses she'd bought in Bali, and filled her plate up with food, looking for people she knew or people she didn't. Especially ones who looked as panicky as she'd felt last time.

"Hello, non-new kid," Raven greeted. "It's kind of fun when it's not overwhelming, right?"

"Hello yourself," Eleanor said warmly. "You're right, this is rather fun. The sun is shining, and the food is excellent. Are you a mentor sibling this time around, too?"

"I am. Her name's Rapunzel. She seems very sweet, and she didn't even run away from me." That last bit was said with a teasing tone and a small wink.

"Surely that makes her far less interesting," Eleanor laughed. "What fun is it taking on a sibling who doesn't make you work for the privilege?"

"Oh, I'm sure we'll have our own special challenges," Raven said. "I, of course, was a very easy little sibling on my first day."

You know, other than flatly refusing to believe it was the future because they weren't on a moon base.

"Naturally," Eleanor said. "Surely there have to be some people for whom Fandom is simple and easily understood, though I'd hate to see their home dimensions."

She grinned before adding, "I've taken up the elder sibling mantle myself, though I daresay not terribly well."

"Cecil," Raven said immediately. "His home town is currently having an election for mayor, and the candidates is a five headed dragon and a faceless old woman who secretly lives in people's houses."

For him, Fandom might actually be kind of boring.

"You have a little sibling!" she cheered. "What are they like?"

"Cecil thought he was teaching class for a bit, and he had some tentacles," Eleanor shuddered. "I don't want to know what his home is like."

As for the other ...

"Very polite, very handsome, and I might have scared him off a bit but I hope not," Eleanor said, turning to scan the crowd for sight of Anders. "There," she said. "In the robes."

"Oh," Raven said, looking where Eleanor indicated. "He's kind of pretty, isn't he. Not from Earth?" she guessed. "Or from another time period?"

"Both, I think," she mused. "Plus I reassured him that there was no odd ceremonial binding to the sibling program, which is the sort of statement that backfires on one."

"I can see that," Raven said. "Not everyone had an evil version back home, after all."

"I'd imagine most didn't," Eleanor laughed. "It's more fun on this side of it, anyway. Big Sisters were protectors."

Okay, most of them were insane, and they were still freaks, but it was nicer being the protector than the protected.

"Well don't you look gorgeous today," Joker told her with a grin. "I knew there was a reason I wanted to come back here."

"There you are," Eleanor grinned. "I was starting to think you wouldn't make it back in time for the picnic."

Was it presumptuous to lean over and steal a quick kiss? She hoped not. And she really hoped that wasn't inappropriate, at an official school-sponsored function like this one.

Presumptuous? No, it was practically expected. And Joker was really glad of it. Hooray for kissing!

"Well, now, I couldn't let down my adoring public, now could I?" he asked with a grin. "And I signed up for a little sib, too -- just where would he have been without my wisdom and guidance? On top of that, I've been away from my girlfriend for a whole week. Some things just aren't right."

"The school was practically falling to pieces without you," she laughed. "We simply can't carry on without your --"

Wait.

"... Girlfriend?"

"....Yeeeees," Joker answered. "Did... did you think that you weren't?"

"Did you think that I was?" Eleanor asked. "You never said that I was. You'd think that would be a conversation that we would have."

Dating was far more complicated than she'd previously realized, apparently.

That... did not sound good. Hopefully it was just the whole 'new to life outside her cage' thing, and NOT her actually rejecting him... right?

"Did you not want to be?" he asked. "If you don't want this to be... y'know, A Thing, then we can discuss..."

"I don't know what sort of thing you mean," Eleanor said apologetically. "We've gone on dates. I enjoy the dates that we've gone on. I don't ... know exactly what the word 'girlfriend' entails. Did I agree to being yours and not realize it?"

She'd hate to think that she'd given him a false impression.

"Well, it's... Okay, look: I've kind of been assuming that this isn't just a series of dates, that it's more of a long-term meaningful relationship thing. I like you, and I think you like me, and if this is just... I dunno, you having fun, then we should clarify that now."

Eleanor had to consider that. "How long-term, and how meaningful?" she asked. "I am rather fond of you. I'm not ... simply kissing you to pass the time, if that's what concerns you."

"Well, I didn't think so," Joker told her. "Let's start with 'until we decide to end it,' and 'reasonably meaningful', and go from there. I mean, this is high school -- relationships only last a few months, on average. And I graduate in a year, so there's that."

"So we've an end date from the start," she mused. "All right, then. I ... do you have to ask formally? I suppose not, if you already thought we'd decided it implicitly."
