Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

Throughout the lawn, tables and chairs had been set up and scattered, some out in the bright, sunny center of everything, and some in the darker, more remote areas.

Eat up, folks! Don't let that food go to waste!

[OCD up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"Naturally," Eleanor said. "Surely there have to be some people for whom Fandom is simple and easily understood, though I'd hate to see their home dimensions."

She grinned before adding, "I've taken up the elder sibling mantle myself, though I daresay not terribly well."

"Cecil," Raven said immediately. "His home town is currently having an election for mayor, and the candidates is a five headed dragon and a faceless old woman who secretly lives in people's houses."

For him, Fandom might actually be kind of boring.

"You have a little sibling!" she cheered. "What are they like?"

"Cecil thought he was teaching class for a bit, and he had some tentacles," Eleanor shuddered. "I don't want to know what his home is like."

As for the other ...

"Very polite, very handsome, and I might have scared him off a bit but I hope not," Eleanor said, turning to scan the crowd for sight of Anders. "There," she said. "In the robes."

"Oh," Raven said, looking where Eleanor indicated. "He's kind of pretty, isn't he. Not from Earth?" she guessed. "Or from another time period?"

"Both, I think," she mused. "Plus I reassured him that there was no odd ceremonial binding to the sibling program, which is the sort of statement that backfires on one."

"I can see that," Raven said. "Not everyone had an evil version back home, after all."

"I'd imagine most didn't," Eleanor laughed. "It's more fun on this side of it, anyway. Big Sisters were protectors."

Okay, most of them were insane, and they were still freaks, but it was nicer being the protector than the protected.

"And I bet you're one badass protector," Raven said. "Nobody'd get past you."

Eleanor flushed at that. "I ... didn't let them harm the girls," she allowed. "Not the splicers, and not Mother."

Once she was able, of course. Locked in her room, she hadn't been much of a protector.

Raven winced. "Sorry," she said. "Didn't mean to remind you of . . . things." She still wasn't entirely certain what Eleanor had been through, but she knew it was pretty terrible. "Still, I'd say Anders will be lucky to have you."

"It's okay," Eleanor said quickly. "We got them all out. That's a victory, right?"

She missed her Little Sisters, but they were home with their families again. In time, they might even forget her.

"I hope I can help him," she said. "Does your new sibling seem to be settling in all right?"

"I think so. She's very enthusiastic, and seems like she'll be able to take a lot in stride."

It helped that she'd been literally sheltered up until, like, that morning. Everything was just as new and exciting and scary as everything else.
