Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

Throughout the lawn, tables and chairs had been set up and scattered, some out in the bright, sunny center of everything, and some in the darker, more remote areas.

Eat up, folks! Don't let that food go to waste!

[OCD up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Perhaps food was what was needed after such an intriguing introduction to the school that meeting his 'big sibling' and roommate had proven. Ichabod sampled a selection of the food on a plate, but was unable to ignore the diversity of the crowd around him.

"Are you well?" Loki asked after watching yet another new student for a moment. Because it entertained him to see the reactions to this, ah, unique island.

Ichabod looked at the stranger, frowning a little.

"Is there a reason why I shouldn't be?" he asked. "One that I am not aware of?"

It was an odd question. He wasn't looking ill, or confused, was he?

"You are new," Loki said kindly. "They all have a certain look about them."

"And what look is that, if I may ask?" Ichabod replied, guessing the boy might be referring to a confused expression, which would mean he wasn't the only one.

"I think you will figure that one out with enough time spent here," Loki replied, tilting his head as he thought it through.

Not sure what the boy was trying to get at, Ichabod said: "I have come to the conclusion that I'm not the ony one to find this an unusual place. Unless perhaps you are from another 'planet' and travel in 'space ships'. But forgive me, I forget my manners. My name is Ichabod Crane."

"Ah, no. I am from Oklahoma." Sort of. "It is nice to meet you, Ichabob. I am Loki."

"Ichabod," he corrected. It is a pleasure to meet you too, Loki. I'm afraid I'm not familiar with the whereabouts of Oklahoma."

"I've never seen anything like it before, have you?" He might be hard-pressed to tell if Kaylin was talking about the food or the people.

She might be too, honestly.

"I find it unlikely that I have, regardless of what you mean with 'it'." The way this day had progressed so far Ichabod was hardly surprised to be addressed so directly by a young lady. He added: "Ichabod Crane, at your service, madam."

She blinked at him. "I'm not a madam. I'm just Kaylin. But it's nice to meet you, Ichabod."

"Apologies, miss Kaylin. I meant no disrespect," Ichabod quickly replied. "The customs here are different from what I'm familiar with."

"Oh, I didn't think you were being disrespectful," Kaylin said quickly. "I just, I'm not important enough for you to call me that. You can just call me Kaylin. It's easier."

"I will not insist," Ichabod said. "And I take it you are from a quite different place as well."

"Ooooooh yes," Kaylin said. "This place is so far different from where I'm from it's hard to even imagine. Your home is different as well?"

"You could say that," Ichabod replied. "It is... confusing. I left Oxford in 1771 and I seem to have been transported more than 200 years into the future. Where are you from?"

Raven had gotten pretty good at recognizing her fellow "more that 50 years out of time" people. Not that it was hard to do with anyone from before the 20th century.

"Hi," she said. "I'm Raven. You're one of the new students, right?"

"I am," Ichabod replied, offering a smile. "Pleased to meet you, miss Raven."

He was beginning to pick up that greetings were considerably less formal here, and made an effort to adapt to the local custom.

"It is quite obvious, I assume?"

"It's a small town," Raven said. "You start to recognize everyone pretty quickly. So where are you from, then, if you don't mind my asking?"

She'd get to the 'when' question soon enough, she was sure.

"From Oxford," he replied, then added: "England", as this might not be as obvious as he had thought. "And yourself?"

"Oh!" Raven smiled. "My brother's hoping to go to school there. He wants to study genetics." Did they have genetics in . . . whenever he was from? "I'm from New York," she said, figuring that'd be easier to recognize than "Westchester". "Though I suspect it's probably not quite a New York you might know."

"Genetics?" No, they didn't. "And I do expect any city would have changed in over 200 years, but at least I know the location of the place on maps, unlike certain planets, and Oklahoma."

It was entirely possible that Raven couldn't locate Oklahoma on a map, and it existed in her time period.

"It's like biology," she said, hoping they had biology 200 years ago, at least. "Only focused on the little bits that make us look and act the way we do." She was probably not the person to try to explain this. "Two hundred years, huh? That must be a big adjustment. I only had to do sixty."

"I... have had to question my sanity several times today," Ichabod offered in reply to that. "I don't know how much of that you had to endure."
