Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

Throughout the lawn, tables and chairs had been set up and scattered, some out in the bright, sunny center of everything, and some in the darker, more remote areas.

Eat up, folks! Don't let that food go to waste!

[OCD up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Kira may have still looked a little shell-shocked as she sat down with her plate. Her parents would probably freak out if they knew where she'd ended up, but she didn't want to leave and... yeah, maybe food would help for the moment.

Stiles was wandering by with his mountain of food and did a double take when he saw Kira. He almost walked by, thinking it might be a doppelganger thing but curiosity got the best of him.

"Hi?"

Of course Kira had food in her mouth when someone spoke to her. She swallowed quickly and gave the boy a smile. "Hi! Um, I didn't take your table, did I?"

"Uh, no, they're not assigned." And this wasn't some teen movie where people got into fights over such things. "This might sound weird but do you know me?"

Kira thought for a moment and then shook her head. "No, I'm sorry. Were you on the shuttle?"

There'd been a lot of closed eyes and trying not to scream, so she could have easily missed him.

"No. We apparently don't know each other at all." No big deal, Stiles barely knew her anyway. "I'm Stiles."

Now Kira felt like she was supposed to know him, but that would be weird, right? "I'm Kira. Are you new or do you already go here?"

"Recently graduated. I've been here forever," Stiles said. "Know the ins and outs and I'm not phased by anything weird that happens here. I'm a Fandom veteran."

"So, people showing up through portals, not knowing what planet we're on let alone what state--is that pretty on par?" she asked. "My big sibling--sorry, guide told me I have to keep an open mind."

Eleanor was on the lookout for new students who might seem inclined to bolt. She gave the girl a curious glance, then offered a brief, hopefully reassuring smile.

"Are you all right?" she asked.

"Does 'overwhelmed but not in a bad way' count as okay?"

She probably just wanted a yes or no there, Kira.

"I mean, yeah. I'm just sort of... processing."

"Certainly," Eleanor replied with a smile. "That's far better than 'overwhelmed in a bad way,' or 'frightened and considering leaving this place altogether.' You get used to this island's oddities after a while."

"Before I left, I was complaining to my dad about having to come here, and he told me to give it a chance," Kira said. "So, this is me giving people with magic and weird stuff a chance."

"Oh, this island is full of weird stuff," Eleanor said cheerfully. "Is there no magic where you're from? I was telling someone earlier, most of what we call magic is just science we don't have a firm grasp on yet. If that helps at all."

"No, there's no magic," she said, because she didn't know any better. "I mean, we have stories about demons and spirits and things like that but, you know, they're just stories."

"Of course," Eleanor replied. "Well, here, there's magic, or at least people who can do it. And all sorts of people with odd genetics or mutations or what-have-you. So if you toss aside your concept of 'normal' and embrace the weirdness, you'll have a much better time coming to terms with all of it."

"'Stay open minded' seems to be everyone's advice," Kira said. "I'm from a pretty multicultural place, so I don't think it'll be too hard. Especially 'cause people doing magic sounds so cool!" She blushed a little. "But probably not exciting to them, I guess."

Okay, so Kathy'd had to adjust to a lot of crazy things since coming to Fandom, including weather machines, portals that took people to anywhere in the ~~world~~ multiverse in an instant, and awesome mutant powers of her own. But one of the harder things to adjust to was how...monochromatic the island could be at times. People-wise.

Look, she was from LA. Her home street had more ethnic restaurants on it than there were people of color on the whole damn island. So when she saw a new girl who was not only not-white but actually Asian...well, she had to come over and say hello.

It wasn't that she thought that they were going to become some kind of insta-best friends or anything, but sometimes it was just nice to see the same kind of face that had surrounded her growing up.

"Hi there," Kathy said, a little awkwardly. Because having a good reason for coming over to talk to someone didn't immediately translate into having anything good to say. "Does it help to promise that the feeling you have will fade? At least, it did for me."

As much as Kira was enjoying all the cute boys that were around--so, so many cute boys--seeing someone who looked familiar in a general "home" sort of way made Kira feel a little less lost. "That's nice to hear, yeah," she said with a smile. "It's just been kind of a weird first day. I wasn't expecting all of this."

So many cute boys. Were there some dimensions that only let incredibly hot people travel to multiverse nexuses or something?

If so, Kathy would like to send them a note of thanks and appreciation. Followed by a sternly-worded letter about how that was an unjust policy.

"It doesn't matter what you expect," she said, plunking herself down across the table from the new girl and giving her what she hoped was a reassuring smile. "Your first day is always unexpected and, trust me, the days can get a lot weirder. But you'll start to get used to it."

No, seriously, Kira. You'd be a crazy shit vetern by the time you went to Beacon Hills.

Which would be good because seriously Beacon Hills, way to be full of crazy.

"So, how weird are we talking here?" Kira asked, leaning in and lowering her voice like she wasn't sure she was supposed to be asking this. "Because people keep saying I'll get used to it, and I just have to be ready for anything but that'd be a lot easier if I knew what I might have to be ready for. I know there's people who don't know where we are, and people who can do magic, but if there's more..."

Ohhhh guuuurl. Kathy was going to tell you all about this damn island.

"Okay, so you have to understand it runs the gamut," Kathy explained, also leaning forward and dropping her voice. Not that there was any real reason to, but it just seemed fitting. "So, there's, like, baseline crazy. That's when everything's pretty normal, just there are people who come from other planets, or have magic, or, umm, have mutant powers that just manifested or something."

You know. Just picking that last one out of thin air. At random. Really.

"Then there are the kinda crazy days. Like when it rains glitter and confetti from the sky or the telephones are all haywire and no one can call anyone they actually want to talk to. Can be a little annoying, but no one's gonna lose it over that stuff. Then you have the really crazy days, where, like, you turn into a boy for a week. Or your possible future kids come for a visit. Or you turn into a kid."

Kathy leaned back. "I know this sounds like I'm hazing you in the worst way, but I'm not. I swear it."

Ooh, this was not the weird summer experience Kira thought she was getting used to.

"But I don't want to be a boy! I like being a girl," she said. "How can--how does this place even function? Do we at least turn into cute kids? Or is it like, monster child central?"

"We turn into the little versions of ourselves," Kathy explained, glad to be able to ease the other girl's mind on one very minor score. "So however cute you were at, like, five or six, that's what you'll be here."

And as for her more important question, Kathy was just going to hold her head and groan. "As for how it functions? I don't even know. I'm not even sure it does; we might all just spend the normal times pretending that it does. Because I've only told you about the really crazy times, not the epicly insane times."

You thought being a boy version of yourself was bad, Kira? Just wait. It got worse.

"That doesn't sound good," Kira said. "I'm going to have to lie to my parents enough as it is."

Maybe if Kathy didn't tell her the insane things, they wouldn't happen?
