Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

Throughout the lawn, tables and chairs had been set up and scattered, some out in the bright, sunny center of everything, and some in the darker, more remote areas.

Eat up, folks! Don't let that food go to waste!

[OCD up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

It was a really nice day, and Evan had met his sibling, who seemed to be nice enough as well. Now it was time to just kind of sit and soak in the ambiance.

Or, rather, to attempt to read in the shade with a deinonychus curled up on one side of him and a corgi-husky cross sitting on the other. Occasionally, he would toss one or the other a cold cut from a place he'd salvaged from the food table. Old Lace had pretty excellent aim, snapping them right out of the air. Ozzy tended to end up with roast beef on his head, more often than not.

Evan would be lying if he said he didn't do it on purpose. He needed the laughs.

"No fucking way," Barry said loking impressed. " Is that a goddamned deinonychus?"

"You know what she is," Evan replied, perking up a little and looking at the new kid. The swearing didn't throw him off, really. He hung out with Deadpool all the time when he visited his own world, and it usually took him a few days to stop cursing up a blue streak after he did. "Most people just assume she's a velociraptor. Because of the claws, I think."

Old Lace blinked up at Barry for a moment. She'd been busy snuffling at some ham, but he seemed interesting enough.

Maybe not as interesting as ham.

"Well most people haven't seen live dinosaurs before," Barry said continuing to look Old Lace over. "How do keep him from choosing down on everyone?"

"She's a her," Evan corrected with a little shrug of his shoulders, "and I tell her not to and I don't starve her. She likes ham, though."

Plus there was that whole telepathic link thing that Gert had strung up between them before she died.

"We'll hopefully we don't run out of ham or we're all fucked," Barry joked. " I'm Barry by the way. Nosy new student."

"I'm Evan. A not-so-new student who doesn't usually mind a little nosiness. You've seen dinosaurs before?"

He was hardly the only person around here, given the island had been crawling with them last semester, but people who saw them off the island were few and far between.

"I went back in time once and another time I accidentally turned my beat friend into one," holding out his hand to see if OL would let him better. "I had to clone him a new body but it turned out okay in the end."

"Well, that's a relief," Evan decided, blinking, while Old Lace sniffed curiously at Barry's hand. "Do you, um, clone new bodies often?"

Evan sort of had clone issues, being one himself and all.

Eleanor stopped in front of Evan with a curious glance.

"I didn't know you had a dinosaur."

This island made for the strangest sentences.

"I didn't, until Thursday," Evan replied, shrugging his shoulders a little and offering Old Lace another piece of lunch meat. "She belonged to Gert."

Yeah, he wasn't looking up, at that. His heart was bleeding a little, though.

"I don't think I know Gert," Eleanor said, frowning. "Did she have to leave in a hurry?"

"She... visited home. It was supposed to just be a quick trip home," Evan murmured, his tone dropping a little as he reached up to pat Old Lace on the nose. "She... died. Something went badly and she was stabbed and she died."

And that was literally all Evan knew about what had happened.

This seemed like a good time to take a seat next to Evan, then.

"I'm sorry," she said. "Were you close?"

It wasn't much, and she doubted it helped. She wasn't good with -- well, people.

"She was a good friend," Evan replied, giving a little nod. "I mean... I don't have many really close friends. But she was one of the few who knew just what to say when it really mattered. She had good advice and didn't expect me to... to be anything. Nothing I wasn't ready to be, myself."

When you were expected to be a hero if only to make up for being a perfect genetic copy of one of the world's greatest evils, that was a big deal.

"Sometimes it's freeing to just ... be," Eleanor agreed softly. "Whoever you feel like being today, with no pressure or expectations in other directions."

Like, say, the Messiah. Eleanor could sympathize.

"I'm sorry for your loss," she said. "Will having her dinosaur help?"

She had Father's memories. She liked to replay them, when she felt lonely.

"It might," Evan decided, nodding a little. "It's not quite the same, but I don't think Old Lace is going to be quite as good at giving me advice as Gert was."

He chewed on his lip a little.

"I suppose she'll be just as good at just accepting me for who I am, though. And she is good company."

It wasn't hard to see why Gert had been so enamored with her.

Dinosaur.

Sure, Joker had been aware there was a dinosaur on campus, in the way that he was aware there were zombies in the bar. And he had about a zillion questions for Gert, but hadn't really gotten around to asking.

He gave Evan a dubious look. "Now, this can only end in tears. Dinosaurs and small furry mammals never really got along."

"It kind of started in tears," Evan noted, turning a wry smile up at Joker. "But she and Ozzy have been doing pretty okay. I mean... I tell her not to eat him. She listens."

That was really about the best that he could ask.

"Shit, that doesn't sound good," Joker told him. "Is everything all right? I mean, he doesn't have any bandages or scars..."

"She," Evan noted again. Poor Old Lace. But discussing her gender was easier than, say, talking about Gert. He did give a ragged exhale before pressing on. "Did you know Gert at all?"

Deliberate past-tense, go.

"Yeah. I mean, we didn't talk much, but I had a class with her. And I knew she had a dinosaur. But... uh... This is not a story that ends well, is it?"

"It's not," Evan replied, softly. "It ends with me inheriting her dinosaur and her not coming back."

"I'm trying to be," Evan admitted. "The school gave me a new sibling, and I can't just hide away forever. But between Gert... Between Gert, and then Sholeh being told she has to go home, kind of forever..."

He gave a little shrug that was bordering on 'well-contained absolute misery.'

"I don't really want to be alone right now."
