Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

Throughout the lawn, tables and chairs had been set up and scattered, some out in the bright, sunny center of everything, and some in the darker, more remote areas.

Eat up, folks! Don't let that food go to waste!

[OCD up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Dinosaur.

Sure, Joker had been aware there was a dinosaur on campus, in the way that he was aware there were zombies in the bar. And he had about a zillion questions for Gert, but hadn't really gotten around to asking.

He gave Evan a dubious look. "Now, this can only end in tears. Dinosaurs and small furry mammals never really got along."

"It kind of started in tears," Evan noted, turning a wry smile up at Joker. "But she and Ozzy have been doing pretty okay. I mean... I tell her not to eat him. She listens."

That was really about the best that he could ask.

"Shit, that doesn't sound good," Joker told him. "Is everything all right? I mean, he doesn't have any bandages or scars..."

"She," Evan noted again. Poor Old Lace. But discussing her gender was easier than, say, talking about Gert. He did give a ragged exhale before pressing on. "Did you know Gert at all?"

Deliberate past-tense, go.

"Yeah. I mean, we didn't talk much, but I had a class with her. And I knew she had a dinosaur. But... uh... This is not a story that ends well, is it?"

"It's not," Evan replied, softly. "It ends with me inheriting her dinosaur and her not coming back."

"Shit. Shit. Oh, man, I'm sorry. I didn't know. Were you close? ...Well, I guess that's a stupid question. You'd have to be, for her to give you her dinosaur... Shit. You know, you don't need to be here, if you don't want to deal with the bright young newbies just yet. You okay?"

"I'm trying to be," Evan admitted. "The school gave me a new sibling, and I can't just hide away forever. But between Gert... Between Gert, and then Sholeh being told she has to go home, kind of forever..."

He gave a little shrug that was bordering on 'well-contained absolute misery.'

"I don't really want to be alone right now."

"Okay, you know what? That blows. Like, seriously, majorly, not okay."

He looked down at Old Lace. "Are you taking good care of him? Make sure he's all right, okay?"

Old Lace responded by blinking up at Joker slowly, and then huffing a sigh and resting her chin on Evan's lap. It was shortly followed by Ozzy's chin. Because Evan was apparently some sort of Disney Princess, minus the songbirds, now.

"They've both been doing a pretty good job of that," Evan noted, giving them each a fond pat. "I'm pretty sure they're both going to whine when I have to leave them in my room for class this week..."

It was bad enough when just the dog did it!

Minus the singing, too. But that was okay.

"What does a dinosaur whine even sound like?" Joker had to ask. "I mean, are you sure she's not just a really big hairless dog?"

"She kind of acts like a really big hairless dog," Evan admitted, looking thoughtfully at the head resting in his lap. "But she hunts her own food, out in the preserve. Deinonychus breakfast time is kind of intense."

And made for an interesting morning detour when Evan went out to do morning training and walking the dog. Evan would stretch. Old Lace would eviscerate a deer. Ozzy would wee on a shrub...

"I would imagine," Joker agreed. "How many squirrels does it take to keep her well-fed?"

"Um, good question," Evan replied. "I only got her on Thursday. Can I measure the squirrel count by how many would fit inside a deer?"

At least she was a reptile, and didn't need to eat huge meals too frequently.

"Deer are probably better than squirrels, anyway," Joker realized. "At least, around here. They're less likely to kill you in your sleep for revenge."

"Or ruin your reputation forever on the radio," Evan agreed. "I spent a semester doing broadcasts, once. Those little guys are spiteful."
