Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

Throughout the lawn, tables and chairs had been set up and scattered, some out in the bright, sunny center of everything, and some in the darker, more remote areas.

Eat up, folks! Don't let that food go to waste!

[OCD up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"No fucking way," Barry said loking impressed. " Is that a goddamned deinonychus?"

"You know what she is," Evan replied, perking up a little and looking at the new kid. The swearing didn't throw him off, really. He hung out with Deadpool all the time when he visited his own world, and it usually took him a few days to stop cursing up a blue streak after he did. "Most people just assume she's a velociraptor. Because of the claws, I think."

Old Lace blinked up at Barry for a moment. She'd been busy snuffling at some ham, but he seemed interesting enough.

Maybe not as interesting as ham.

"Well most people haven't seen live dinosaurs before," Barry said continuing to look Old Lace over. "How do keep him from choosing down on everyone?"

"She's a her," Evan corrected with a little shrug of his shoulders, "and I tell her not to and I don't starve her. She likes ham, though."

Plus there was that whole telepathic link thing that Gert had strung up between them before she died.

"We'll hopefully we don't run out of ham or we're all fucked," Barry joked. " I'm Barry by the way. Nosy new student."

"I'm Evan. A not-so-new student who doesn't usually mind a little nosiness. You've seen dinosaurs before?"

He was hardly the only person around here, given the island had been crawling with them last semester, but people who saw them off the island were few and far between.

"I went back in time once and another time I accidentally turned my beat friend into one," holding out his hand to see if OL would let him better. "I had to clone him a new body but it turned out okay in the end."

"Well, that's a relief," Evan decided, blinking, while Old Lace sniffed curiously at Barry's hand. "Do you, um, clone new bodies often?"

Evan sort of had clone issues, being one himself and all.

"Well, not everyday," Barry said as he attempted to pat OL. "Only when the shit hits the fan and I have to fix something. So where are you from, Evan? No offense but you look like someone from another planet."

Old Lace was going to tolerate the patting. And by 'tolerate,' the narrative meant she was going to be thrilled to be getting attention, and lean her head forward for more attention. Hello, attention.

"None taken," Evan replied with a shrug. "I mean, there are people here from another planet. I'm one of the ones who isn't, actually. I'm from a different Earth. Just... one that happens to have fun with genetics more often than most."

Barry gave Evan a cautious look as he gave OL some neck scritches. "When you say fun with genetics, you're not talking about the government are you?"

"Um..." Evan frowned a little, and gave his shoulders a shrug. "Not specifically? I mean, I'm not a government project or anything. I'm a mutant. Natural genetic mutations are pretty common in my reality."

Evan was going to attempt an awkward little smile, now. See him smile? See him smile awkwardly?

Barry's tension eased up a bit and he cracked a grin. "Sorry. I've had my own issues with my own obtrusive government. Wasn't sure if you had the same problem."

"Not personally," Evan replied. "Um. My world has kind of a lot of things. The government and mutants have clashed a few times. They're just kind of not responsible for my face or anything."

He could be here for months going into painful detail about all of the ways the government and mutants didn't play nicely together. It was probably best he not start.

"And I'm pretty sure even if they were interested in me," which, if they had any idea who he was, they most certainly would be, "it's not going to follow me here or anything."

"Good to know," Barry said honestly. "I prefer no one tried to track me down. Might be easier to work here than in my basement at home."

"Work?" Evan gave a curious little headtilt at that. "What kind of work?"

The sort of work that you didn't want the government noticing, at least. That was intriguing.

"Scientific research," Barry admitted as he gave OL some more neck scritches. "Biology, physics, robotics... that kind of shit. I used to keep it all a secret back home but here I feel like I can talk about it freely. It's weird, I've been keeping this whole intellect thing a secret since I was a fucking baby. Talking about it openly is... fucking liberating."

"I can imagine," Evan admitted with a little smile. "There are a lot of things I still have difficulty talking about, even here, but at the same time there are plenty of things I wouldn't dream about sharing at my old school that people just shrug off, here. Powers and that sort of thing."

Being a tiny clone of Apocalypse. Et cetera.

"Oh yeah?" Barry asked looking interested. "What kind of powers?"

"Um... stretchy ones, mostly," Evan offered. "Some limited shapeshifting, that sort of thing."

No, that wasn't nearly an accurate representation of what he could do. It was just the extent of what he was willing to share with a near-stranger. But he held up his hand and shifted it into a club. Something nice and simple, that would get the point across without being too attention-grabbing.

Barry's mouth dropped open. His mind automatically began trying to process the organic manipulation needed to move from a hand-shape another.

He was clearly impressed.

"Dude! That's fucking awesome!"

Clearly.

"There are people who can do way more interesting things than this," Evan replied, shifting his hand back again and giving his fingers a wiggle. "People get all kinds of different powers when they manifest as mutants back home. Not everyone becomes human Silly Putty."

... Glob Herman being the obvious exception.

Well Glob is a special guy. And he can't shape shift. But if you want a human candle...

"Really? All unique powers?" Barry asked as his brain tried to visualize the human and genome and how it could vary like that. "Man that sounds like an interesting place. Why did you come here?"

There really wasn't anything like an obnoxious classmate that you could actually light on fire!

Evan wrinkled his nose a little at that question.

"Um... bullies. At my old school."

Quentin.

Barry frowned.

"Fuckers."

Barry hated bullies.

"Say if you ever need me to re-write his genetic code to make him a kitten, I'll volunteer for the project."
