Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

Throughout the lawn, tables and chairs had been set up and scattered, some out in the bright, sunny center of everything, and some in the darker, more remote areas.

Eat up, folks! Don't let that food go to waste!

[OCD up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Sparkle had made his way out here, of course, but really only to pick over the picnic tables and then find himself a place to sit and eat on the grass. He didn't seem too concerned about the new faces - either he'd get to know them or he wouldn't - and it had been too long and tiring and stupid a week for him to do his usual welcome song and dance number to drive the newbies nuts already.

"You look so thrilled to be here," Flick remarked dryly once he spotted Sparkle. Hey, it was the rare person he'd initiate conversation with. "Bad week?"

Flick! Sparkle's favourite student left on the island!

... Granted, there weren't a hell of a lot left.

"Started with some assholes with laser swords trying to kill me, kinda went downhill from there," he replied with a shrug. "So, you know, it's been whatever the hell kind of week that's supposed to be."

Yes. Yes, it had been a bad week.

"How are you doing?"

"Well, the people trying to kill me is something I'm familiar with but the laser swords are not," Flick admitted with a raise of his eyebrows. "I'm doing about light years better than you are, it seems. Least they didn't kill you, right? Silver lining."

"Least they didn't kill me," Sparkle agreed. "But someone who came after the other guys did make off with Atton in handcuffs."

Yeah, Sparkle was still all sorts of bitter about that one.

"Assholes."

"Atton?" He recognized the name but wasn't sure if he'd ever really talked to the guy. "He do anything to earn the handcuffs or just someone throwing their power around?"

Sparkle gave his shoulders a shrug.

"It was complicated. Shit that happened during some war. He watched his home burn, and then turned around and returned the favour... or... something."

It had been messy.

"Dunno. I just know a friend of mine was dragged out of here by some government-type with a laser-monk hero complex."

"Revenge," Flick noted with a nod. "Can't say I wouldn't have done the same thing in his position."

He kind of had on a smaller scale.

"For what it's worth, sorry that happened to him and you. Maybe they'll be lenient."

"Yeah, I'm sure they will," Sparkle replied in a tone that suggested that he thought no such thing. "Ugh, this fucking place. They'll talk about new beginnings and fresh starts here until they're blue in the face, and then throw you under the goddamned bus here the moment you become inconvenient. Good to know."

"So," Celia said, wandering over with some cake, "if you were my big sibling, and I'm now someone else's big sibling, does that make you their grand-sibling? I realize that doesn't make sense but otherwise we're all just each other's siblings and I don't much like that, either."

"I'm not going to make off with your sibling or anything, if that's what you're wondering," Sparkle offered, glancing up at Celia with a little smirk. "What kinda fresh young mind did they hand over to you to mould in your personal grand vision?"

The way he'd totally moulded hers, sure!

"Soren," she said, pointing vaguely in his direction. "I'm hoping I did an all right job. The poor boy seems to have come from this time, but there's no way of knowing because they use an entirely different calendar. I wasn't prepared for that. It makes the time-travel bit with me seem easy by comparison."

"It does kinda complicate that," Sparkle noted, looking at him. "Good test would be to ask him if he knows how to work an electric light switch, or, like, a TV. Oh! Ask him if he can program a VCR or something. That puts a pretty definite date on it!"

A beat.

"Soren's a weird name, though."

"And Sparkle isn't?" Celia said, arching a brow. "He has computers, though. And seemed to think I was silly for asking, so that puts him...well, a fair bit more recent than me. Close enough to this time, I think, but from a parallel dimension."

She shook her head, taking a bite of her cake. "And how have you been, anyway?"

"I've... you know. Been." Drunk, mostly. "Worst part about going here is watching people up and leave, you know? People come to school and then they graduate and move on and there's nothing you can do about it, they're just gone."

He maybe had a few issues. Most of his closest friends had up and left the island, one way or another.

"But not forever," Celia offered, gentling some. "Aren't the alumni here fairly active? And there's...telephones, and such."

She was more of a letter-writer, but still.

"Some go forever," Sparkle sighed. "Some leave the island and never look back, because this place went out of its way to screw 'em up. Some of them leave because they have to, and they don't have time to leave a forwarding address or anything. Not everyone stays in touch, you know? And it's a big multiverse."

And sometimes one of your best friends got arrested by Jedi. And your ex-it's-complicated had to go back to Shadowhunt or whatever. And so on.

Sparkle kinda loved everything about this arrangement, so sue him. He took a moment to look Cade over, and then give him a little nod, and the tiniest of smiles.

"You know, I've bit people for calling me that before."

He was going to merrily ignore any vampiric implications that came with that statement.

"How you doing?"

"This week has been completely full of poodoo," Cade said, drinking from his own cup, "but I'm getting drinks with Jack--" he pointed to the teacher, "--on Tuesday, so things are looking up."

Because Cade made good choices.

"Welcome to the wonderful world of the newly graduated?" Sparkle gave Cade a quick, tired grin. "I'd say I'm jealous, but, you know, I'm not gonna get between you and the lady-teacher you're planning on getting drunk with."

And whatever else that might entail.

"I'm super ready to get the hell away from this place and all of this bullshit, though. Shame I can't convince Lewis of that without sounding fucking insane."

"It's a toss-up," Sparkle admitted. "Stick it out for another year and risk actually fucking going insane, or convince Lewis I'm nuts now and go the hell home. Home was shit, but at least it was the sort of shit I can handle."

No Sith. No vampires. As far as he was aware, nobody randomly and temporarily turned into other versions of themselves that were well-adjusted or cannibals or undead...

"So, you have any big plans for life after high school?"

"Sounds awkward," Sparkle decreed, looking toward the area where most of the teachers were conglomerating. Most of them seemed... really young. "Which ones are yours?"
