Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

Throughout the lawn, tables and chairs had been set up and scattered, some out in the bright, sunny center of everything, and some in the darker, more remote areas.

Eat up, folks! Don't let that food go to waste!

[OCD up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Maybe shirtless Cade bearing a lemonade ~~heavy on the gin~~ would help?

"Ho," he said, flopping down onto the grass next to him.

Sparkle kinda loved everything about this arrangement, so sue him. He took a moment to look Cade over, and then give him a little nod, and the tiniest of smiles.

"You know, I've bit people for calling me that before."

He was going to merrily ignore any vampiric implications that came with that statement.

"How you doing?"

"This week has been completely full of poodoo," Cade said, drinking from his own cup, "but I'm getting drinks with Jack--" he pointed to the teacher, "--on Tuesday, so things are looking up."

Because Cade made good choices.

"Welcome to the wonderful world of the newly graduated?" Sparkle gave Cade a quick, tired grin. "I'd say I'm jealous, but, you know, I'm not gonna get between you and the lady-teacher you're planning on getting drunk with."

And whatever else that might entail.

"I'm super ready to get the hell away from this place and all of this bullshit, though. Shame I can't convince Lewis of that without sounding fucking insane."

"Or you can just go with being thought insane and get away from here," Cade said with a wry smile.

"It's a toss-up," Sparkle admitted. "Stick it out for another year and risk actually fucking going insane, or convince Lewis I'm nuts now and go the hell home. Home was shit, but at least it was the sort of shit I can handle."

No Sith. No vampires. As far as he was aware, nobody randomly and temporarily turned into other versions of themselves that were well-adjusted or cannibals or undead...

"So, you have any big plans for life after high school?"

"Nope," Cade said, "which is why I'm still karking here, plus the grandparents wanted me to stick around while they teach for the summer..."

"Sounds awkward," Sparkle decreed, looking toward the area where most of the teachers were conglomerating. Most of them seemed... really young. "Which ones are yours?"

Cade made a face, then jerked his thumb toward Ender and Ben. "Them."

"Huh." Sparkle looked for a moment too long, and then nodded a bit, expression a little more mellow. Weirdly neutral, even, for Sparkle. "I've had a few classes with Wiggin. He was... you know... not a shitty teacher."

And then he left. And there was little that was more difficult for Sparkle to forgive than leaving.

"I think that's what he's aiming for: not shitty," Cade said. "He's all right, I guess. I'm his TA. I wasn't exactly given an option."

"I was, back when I played TA for him," Sparkle noted, shrugging. "I might, I dunno, talk to him. Sometime."

Because Ender was good to talk to. If Sparkle ever got over that 'leaving' thing.

"He's a good one to talk to," Cade agreed, "especially about Jedi poodoo."

"Which means he understands just what huge fucking hypocrites they are?"

Look, everything Sparkle needed to know about Jedi, he learned from knowing Atton. And from what he'd seen of them this past week, he wasn't inclined to question much of what Atton had said, either.

Cade shrugged. "Some of them, yeah. Ender's spent time with Ben, and Ben's whole family who are Jedi."

Way to disassociate yourself from them, Cade.

Sparkle nodded a little. Hey, there was something to be said for disassociation. Particularly when it meant protecting one's own ass.

"I might bring... you know... this week up, then. If he wants to hear it."

Sparkle would be hard-pressed to think of a time when Ender wouldn't want to listen. But still.

"He'll want to hear it," Cade said quietly. "He always does."

Sparkle nodded, sitting silently and staring at his toes for a good minute before perking up suddenly and making grabby hands at Cade's lemonade.

"Gimme. I'm tired and angry and so far I haven't done anything today but bitch. That's got to change."

Cade passed it over. "Let's get ripped and decide who the hottest newbie is. If you say it's one of my granddads, I'll never forgive you."

Sparkle opened his mouth, tempted, temporarily, to say just that, before shrugging and accepting the drink.

Oh god, yes, this was just what he needed.

"Sounds like a good way to spend the day," he decided. "Picking from the student pool, since it looks like at least most of the teachers aren't new here anyway?"

All of them. Just flat-out all of them. But a few were a little before his time.

"Sounds good," Cade said. "Kriff me, look at all that hair."

"... I wanna brush it. And style it. Shit, washing and drying that must take days."

Rapunzel, you didn't know it yet, but you were Sparkle's new favourite newbie.

"That seems like way too much work," offered the guy who couldn't be bothered to shave most days.

"I bet it is," Sparkle decided. "Good thing it's not your hair, huh?"

It wasn't his, either. But he still wanted to play with it.

"I would've cut most of it off years ago," Cade said. "Wonder why she hasn't."
