Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

Throughout the lawn, tables and chairs had been set up and scattered, some out in the bright, sunny center of everything, and some in the darker, more remote areas.

Eat up, folks! Don't let that food go to waste!

[OCD up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Will found it a little strange to be attending another picnic. He'd thought he'd be back in Wisconsin by now but he still hadn't heard from home and he was beginning to think he'd been forgotten about by everyone but his friends.

But, he was pushing that out of his mind so he could enjoy the free food and the warmer weather.

Kaylin was still overawed by the abundance of food and had more of it on a plate - and these plates! What in the world were they? - than she'd ever be able to eat.

She was attempting to add a bit of something that smelled particularly delicious, sidestepping one of the benches and bumped into someone.

"Sorry," she said quickly, turning around to see who it was. Not that she'd know him, of course. "I was just... distracted. Who knew there could even be so much food?"

"No problem," Will said easily. "I think this amount of food is enough to make anyone a little distracted. I've been here for a little bit now and I'm still surprised."

"What is it like here?" Kaylin asked curiously. "It seems so completely strange. The..." she tried to remember what they were called. "The buses and the lights and - and nothing seems to run on magic and there aren't any door wards even that I've seen."

Not that she'd miss door wards if there weren't any here. She hated the things. They hurt.

"It's good." Will knew that wasn't going to be helpful but he was going to elaborate. "If that's what you're used to, the magic and stuff, you'll find that here but most everything is pretty technologically advanced."

He nodded. "It can take some getting used to but the exposure is pretty much unavoidable so you tend to have to get used to it quickly."

She wasn't sure what techno-whatever meant and she was pretty sure exposure was when you were outside too long, but he seemed nice and helpful, so she just nodded.

And then shook her head.

"I'm sorry, but what does that mean? That techno advanced thing and all?"

"Oh, uh -- " How to explain this? Will scratched his cheek. "Do you know what electricity is?"

He hoped that didn't make her feel stupid but he wasn't sure where he needed to start.

Her raised eyebrows were probably enough of an indication that she didn't know what he was talking about.

[ooc: And I'm off to do our matinee performance. SP?]

"Guess that means you don't," Will said gently. "I don't want to confuse you but electricity is basically what's making almost anything you see here possible. It's what makes things heat up without an open flame, it's what powers the bus you mentioned and the lights you'll see inside the dorms. It's not magic, it's science."

[Sure thing! SP is great!]

"Sounds a lot like magic to me," she said slowly. "Just a different kind from back home."

Do you use mirrors here to talk to one another and leave messages?"

Will shook his head. "We use telephones, for the most part. They're another thing made useful by electricity and technology. As far as I know, mirrors are just used to see your own reflection."

"Telephones..." Kaylin pondered this for a moment. "Huh. I guess I have even more to learn than I thought."

"Our mirrors can show our reflections as well, of course, not that I ever use them for that if I don't have to."

"What other things do you use mirrors for?" Will asked curiously. "They're a communication device where you're from?"

"Look at this," Celia greeted him. "We've made it to the point where we're not new anymore. I scarcely know what to do with myself."

"Eat way too much food and laugh at ourselves?" Will suggested with a laugh. "Or maybe laugh at ourselves because we ate way too much food?"

"Why choose?" Celia said, taking a seat with him. "Meet anyone interesting yet? I've been assigned a little brother, which is a position I don't at all feel qualified for."

"I talked with someone who seems to come from a place similar to yours," Will told her. "She didn't really know about technology and electricity just yet."

And he really hoped he hadn't confused her. "Whose your little brother?"

"His name's Soren," Celia said, pointing him out. "Seems nice enough. I found another one from a time like mine -- well, a little before mine, actually. There seem to be a few. We should hold a special tutorial in a common room on televisions and computers and the like. Electricity, too, even if I was a bit more used to that one."

"I don't know who would be best to explain something like that," he said because he knew it wasn't him. "Electricity is a difficult concept to explain in ways that aren't 'well, it makes things work!' Not very helpful."

"I mean, I understand electricity," Celia said. "I could do that bit. I'd need someone to explain things like your tablet, though, because otherwise I'll be sitting there talking about how you can use it to look up puppies and isn't that enough?"

"But that's such an important function," he laughed. "If that was all I could use my tablet for, I would. It'd make life a lot easier."

"I'll allow kittens and perhaps rabbits, as well," Celia decided. "See, now it's multifunctional, even if you only use it to look at adorable things."

"It'd make my life a lot easier if I only had to use it for that," he said, chuckling. "But, I think I'd go with explaining basic computers to people before going for my tablet since it's even more advanced than some of the current stuff here."

"Or you could start with the really advanced stuff and work your way backward," Celia suggested, demonstrating why she would be a terrible teacher of any subject not related to her magic. "Throw them into the deep end. Or maybe it's just enough for people to know the basic terminology and what it does, like I do."

"I don't know if people would really like to be thrown into the deep end," he pointed out. "Might be too much especially if they come from places that still haven't discovered electricity. Overwhelming."
