Plus We Have a Motorcade [Thursday, April 3, 2014]

"All those in favor of pretending most of this last semester never happened, say 'aye'," Josh said, coming into the classroom. "So ordered. Okay, so when the President goes out, a great easy photo-op is to stop in at a local food place and take a picture with the owner. You can talk about the importance of small business, health insurance, increasing the minimum wage or whatever, plus you get a tasty meal out of it." He clapped his hands together. "So today's very difficult assignment: if you were visiting Washington DC, Chicago, and Austin, what would you order?"

It was possible Josh was just hungry today.

Eleanor Lamb

... she's holding food. It counts.

"Are we allowed to ask the owner for recommendations?" Raven suggested.
abitlowkey: (...seriously?)

"A clever idea," Loki chimed in. "Perhaps researching food blogs as well? So that you do not go for the tourist locations and may pretend that you truly do know the city, thus inspiring confidence in the populous."

"Maybe use the recommendations of the owner, but with a slight, inoffensive change," Raven suggested. "That way, the press can't call you a pushover who doesn't make her own decisions."
abitlowkey: (I don't even... what)

"You do not watch enough news," Loki replied slowly. Because Fox News was a bit much even for him.

Raven didn't actually watch any news.

"The press can't just make things up about you," she said.

It was precious, really.

"Oh dear."

IT WAS JUST SO PRECIOUS.

"There are rules," Raven said.

The '50s were just a more innocent time.

"Oh, that's clever," Eleanor said. "I want to change my answer to that."

Joker thought about it. "Okay, so, Chicago, you totally have to go for pizza, right? And you have to sit there and pretend that it's better than New York style, even that is so complete bullshit. And... Austin, that's in... California? So... No, okay, got nothin'. Washington... Does Washington even have a cuisine?" He frowned. "Okay, you know what? New plan: Just go to some kind of greasy-spoon diner. Burger and fries, maybe a pot roast, special of the day if you're feeling adventurous."

Eleanor knew nothing about any of those places, much less their local cuisine. So she was going to try to think about this one.

"If we're supposed to be talking about ... small businesses and so on," she said, slowly, "can't we research some particular restaurant that has had struggles related to whatever topic we're shoehorning into the photo op? And make the selection based on that, rather than food."

"Psssssssst!"

Joker handed Eleanor a folded piece of paper, on which was written "DO U WANT 2 GO 2 PROM W/ ME? Y/N (circle 1)"

He thought he was hilarious.

The real shame was that Eleanor had never gone to middle school, or played MASH, or, you know, passed stupid notes during study hall.

And so she turned around to give him a very curious sort of look.

"The dance?" she said. "Isn't that tomorrow?"

Eleanor, you were failing at note-passing, here.

Joker sighed. A good joke wasted.

"Why, yes, it is, and I've bought you a ticket, so I really hope you're not going to reject me, here. I really should have asked you earlier, I know."

"I'm ... not rejecting you," she said, flushing a little. "I just -- hadn't thought about it. I mean, I'd like to go. I'll just need to get a dress, that's all. I -- yes."

She grabbed the note and circled "Y" rather dramatically, and handed it to him with a flourish. "I accept."

Joker accepted it with an equal flourish, and started drawing little hearts on the paper.

"You hadn't thought about prom?!?!" he asked. "Okay, yeah, just so you know? Dances make great date nights. Especially prom."

You made me late for work, today. Because of this post, I thought about how hungry I was and had to stop for a bagel on the way in.
