Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

It was a new year, and with the new year came the new spring term, and Fandom High was all set to welcome its new students, along with those just returning from holiday trips home. It was a familiar setting for the latter bunch: there was the requisite bonfire, with tables and chairs scattered around it, as well as the buffet table with moddable warm food and drinks.

And of course, name tags and lists of Big and Little Siblings as well as roommates. Yep, the weather was okay (if snowy) for early January, and Fandom was all ready to celebrate the start of a new term.

[OCD up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Paige barely knew where she was right now. It just seemed too bright and cheerful to be real. She was so used to crumbling, shadows and darkness that this place seemed like a dream.

Just to be safe, she'd pulled a few spirits to her on arrival for protection. Jaxon had assured her this was a place she could recover and be safe and open but she didn't completely trust him.

Still. She couldn't deny the change in enviroment felt nice and she didn't feel like someone was going to appear and arrest her and take her back to Sheol I.

She'd give it a try, she supposed.

Pinkie Pie had gone for subtle on occasion when looking for her new teaching buddy in picnics past. But her welcome wagon was acting up (too much cake batter accidentally put in the confetti cannon), and she wanted to meet them before it decided to go kaput for the day. "Paaaaaaaaaaaaaaaige!" she called, trotting through the picnic. "Paige Mahoooooooooooooooooney!"

Sorry, new folks, you were getting introduced to the talking pink pony at maximum volume, this time around.

You know that spot right over there by a tree where nobody was standing? PEW. With a strong breeze trailing behind him, a guy in a pretty sleek costume - if he said so himself - was standing there, carrying a single duffle bag on his shoulder. He leaned against the tree for a moment to catch his breath, went to wipe his brow, and apparently realized something because he started cursing under his breath.

PEW.

He was gone again, although a snow drift suggested he went that way.

PEW.

Now there was just a guy in normal clothes. Not a costume! Welcome to Fandom High, James. Try to be inconspicuous.

Was he a normal guy in a nametag? Because Kitty was looking for those. Though she was also on the lookout for people who looked new, which was why she came over to say, "Hey there, new guy."

She was friendly like that.

Batman loomed off to the side of the teacher area. He had a new 'buddy' to meet and he wanted to make sure she could find his easily.

Because it was difficult to track down a huge, ripped dude in a bat costume, yes. Shut up. He was being helpful.

"So like...'Batman' is like, a literal thing with you?" Cheryl asked as she approached. "'Cause I got the memo about my teaching buddy named Batman but I figured it was like...Jewish? Like Goldman. Except a Goldman isn't usually a man who's gold." Pause. "Unless you're not him. In which case, nice cape."

Kaidan wasn't getting rained on. That was a step up from Vancouver. He could handle everything else, he felt. Well-- as long as there weren't any unpleasant surprises today.

He stuck to the teacher area, keeping an eye on the students, sipping his coffee. Good enough for him. For now.

Jono had made the short trek back to the Boards after dropping off the students, mostly to get himself another jacket. He'd loaned his last one to a girl who was wearing nothing but a slip dress and a pair of diving boots, of all things, and it was still January out here.

Of course the one he found was also black leather. He had several.

That accomplished, he was taking his place in the teacher area, looking as casual as he possibly could about it. He felt a bit conspicuous standing there wrapped from head to toe in black leather when so many people were probably still expecting Big Blue, but at least, he supposed, he wasn't quite as conspicuous as Batman.

McCoy was here; he was alive, but damnit, he was definitely missing at least a few atoms from the portal over. Who in their right mind looked at a human body and said "hey, that looks like something I should poof through some quantum doohicky". Whatever happened to driving somewhere in a nice, grounded car? Or walking. Walking was nice.

(Don't tell him how many miles San Francisco is from Fandom. Logic will rustle him.)

He was in the teacher area, trying to look welcoming while also grumbling about travel through space-time.

That space-time travel was definitely something to get used to, yes. Jono could even sympathize! Though, at this particular moment, he was mostly going to just swing by to introduce himself, instead.

//Excuse me? Leonard McCoy, is it?// He gave McCoy a bit of a nod as he approached, so that he'd know who the owner of that disembodied psionic voice was. //Jonothon Starsmore. I'm your teaching buddy this semester.//

"Long trip, huh?" Mindy had heard some of the grumbling. Her tone was teasing and a touch more familiar than most people were with strangers. Just charge right in there, Min.

Cheryl stood off to the side, clutching a steaming cup of coffee and eyeing the various passers-by.

What. A. Freakshow.

Like seriously. And she was used to New York. And Krieger.

Pam had a thermos filled with Green Russians. Better than coffee for getting her morning started.

"Soooo," she said, giving the crowd a critical eye. "We got stuck right in Weirdo Central, huh?"

After dropping off her many, many bags at her new place, Mindy made it to the picnic. It was chilly, so she was hoping to strike up a conversation with some chivalrous person who might give her his coat to wear over her own. Never mind that she could have easily worn a warmer coat if she hadn't been so concerned with making sure that people saw her cute dress.

She was really appreciating the many varieties of coffee on one of the drink tables. Taking forever to make her choice, of course, but that was... Mindy.

Despite the freezing weather, Jack was a ball of sunsh -- okay, no. No, she was not. But she was at least trying to look vaguely helpful as she glanced around for this Pam person she was supposed to mentor, or what the hell ever.

In between shivers, she played poker on her datapad. The people playing this morning had no idea how to bid.

Yeah, Electroclash had managed to drag her arse out here for this. In uniform, although with a coat over it.

She was staying close to a bonfire, thanks.

In light of the brisk temperatures, Bond had decided to trade in his tie and suit jacket for a hot dad jumper woolen pullover.

He made it work.

Clint was going to be standing closer to the bonfire than usual today, but he didn't think anyone could blame him. He'd been really, really tempted to stay inside today, but the siren call of free food and potentially running into people who knew him got him out of bed and dressed in many layers of purple and black. The black made it classy, of course.

[On SP here, but I just can't stay away from the picnic altogether!]

Kitty was definitely doing most of her socializing from around the bonfire, because every once in a while it seemed like having an outdoor picnic in Maryland in January didn't seem the best idea ever. So while she was reasonably bundled up for the weather, bonfire, yes.

Well, at least there weren't flowers this time.

Most of Herc's attention was on Max, who was leashed to keep him from setting off to make friends with everyone (or raid the food) but he was keeping an eye on the crowd, checking things over.

He was in a good mood, lots of new beginning type feelings. This was not likely to last the day.

Riley had lost track of time. He'd been writing and then he'd ended up playing video games so it'd been late in the afternoon when he realized the picnic was on.

But, he'd made it out there eventually, at least.

Pam didn't mind the cold so much -- she was from Wisconsin, this hardly counted as cold. She had one of those knit hats with ear flaps on and a jacket over her usual 1960s-casual-office-wear.

She also had a big green thermos filled with Green Russians, because like hell she was starting her teaching career sober. She might even share, if someone hot asked. (Or someone passably decent. Pam wasn't fussy. At all.)

Meanwhile, she was enjoying the eye candy. It was kind of weird eye candy, like, one crazy-looking person for every hottie, but hell, that just made for a more fun experience.

After seeing Mindy (and her copious amounts of luggage) to her new place, Hannibal headed straight to the picnic. Chauffeur he would play; valet was a bit much. Hopefully she wouldn't encounter anything strange enough to break her before he found her again.

Though the result of that might be interesting to see.

For now, he was just going to mingle and wait.
