Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

It was a new year, and with the new year came the new spring term, and Fandom High was all set to welcome its new students, along with those just returning from holiday trips home. It was a familiar setting for the latter bunch: there was the requisite bonfire, with tables and chairs scattered around it, as well as the buffet table with moddable warm food and drinks.

And of course, name tags and lists of Big and Little Siblings as well as roommates. Yep, the weather was okay (if snowy) for early January, and Fandom was all ready to celebrate the start of a new term.

[OCD up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"You're quite welcome." Hannibal nodded to her. "However, my duties as a guide are far from complete. I believe I'm also meant to alert you to some of the quirks of this place." Which he could do now, with visual aids.

"I should probably start by asking that you observe the other teachers and students closely." He waved vaguely at the crowd, then pointed out a few to her: the girl with butterfly wings, the blue alien, the amphibious alien...the pink pony.

Mindy did as he asked, looking a little puzzled. "Is this going to be a magic trick?" she wondered amicably.

But then she started to notice the less conventional-looking people. "Whoa." Yes, Mindy. Whoa. "Cool costumes."

"Not costumes," Hannibal corrected. "Well, Batman there," he pointed, "and perhaps a few others, yes. However, I assure you that Mordin," he indicated him, "is in fact an amphibious being from another world. And Pinkie," he looked a little pained as the pony gushed about something, "is in fact a large, pink - and incredibly enthusiastic - pony."

Mindy rubbed her eyes, like that was going to make the pink pony less equine.

It didn't, but that didn't stop her from disbelieving anyway.

"Okay, ha ha. But I obviously expected to be hazed, so this clearly was not as funny a prank on the new teacher as it could have been."

"Do I seem like the sort to play pranks?" Hannibal asked. Honestly, Mindy, if he were going to play a trick, it would be much nastier.

"Tell me, do you know the names of your students this semester?"

"Yes!" She knew some stuff, see? "...Well. I would know them if I memorized everything I wrote down in my phone," she corrected, already reaching for her iPhone.

She pulled up the list and rattled off, "Alana, Maddie, Mavis, Jessica, Eleanor, Liara and Jackson."

She winced. Yikes. One boy in the whole class? That could be weird.

Oh, Mindy; that was quite possibly the least of your worries.

Hannibal nodded. "That is Alana," he pointed her out. "Not the most dedicated of students, but pleasant enough. Liara," he recalled the name, "is there. I don't know her that well. Mavis won't be here until sundown, for reasons which should be obvious given her surname is Dracula. I imagine they'll all have quite a few questions about human biology. I'm afraid I don't know the others."

"Wait, wait." Mindy held up both hands. No, that looked theatrical; she dropped one hand to her side. "You are telling me that I have stepped into some fantasy movie school? I mean, I guess I always was pretty sure that Hogwarts could be real... or the school from Sky High... or the X-Men Academy..."

She looked around the picnic with what felt like a fresh pair of eyes. Could he be serious? It would explain a lot...

"We don't make movies here that I'm aware of," Hannibal answered dryly.

He wasn't going to mention he had only a vague idea of what she meant by those places. Welcome to Hannibal Lecter - avoiding pop culture since the sixties.

"Well, cameras wouldn't work at Hogwarts," Mindy said, waving a hand like that only affirmed her theory. "So what are you saying, exactly?"

"I'm saying that no matter what your experience, you're very likely to see things here that you wouldn't have thought possible. It's best to be prepared and keep an open mind."

Could she do that? If not, he would have been a failure as a teaching buddy, but it might be quite fun to watch. So, he won either way, really.

"I can do that!" She thought. Maybe. It would take some firsthand experience to tell her for sure. "I'm not some rigid, set-in-her-ways career success story, you know. I'm pretty flexible."
