Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

It was a new year, and with the new year came the new spring term, and Fandom High was all set to welcome its new students, along with those just returning from holiday trips home. It was a familiar setting for the latter bunch: there was the requisite bonfire, with tables and chairs scattered around it, as well as the buffet table with moddable warm food and drinks.

And of course, name tags and lists of Big and Little Siblings as well as roommates. Yep, the weather was okay (if snowy) for early January, and Fandom was all ready to celebrate the start of a new term.

[OCD up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Paige barely knew where she was right now. It just seemed too bright and cheerful to be real. She was so used to crumbling, shadows and darkness that this place seemed like a dream.

Just to be safe, she'd pulled a few spirits to her on arrival for protection. Jaxon had assured her this was a place she could recover and be safe and open but she didn't completely trust him.

Still. She couldn't deny the change in enviroment felt nice and she didn't feel like someone was going to appear and arrest her and take her back to Sheol I.

She'd give it a try, she supposed.

Pinkie Pie had gone for subtle on occasion when looking for her new teaching buddy in picnics past. But her welcome wagon was acting up (too much cake batter accidentally put in the confetti cannon), and she wanted to meet them before it decided to go kaput for the day. "Paaaaaaaaaaaaaaaige!" she called, trotting through the picnic. "Paige Mahoooooooooooooooooney!"

Sorry, new folks, you were getting introduced to the talking pink pony at maximum volume, this time around.

The talking pony was unexpected.

Hearing her name come from a talking pony was even more unexpected. Paige didn't move immediately, trying to remember if she'd woken up this morning or if this was a dream.

The dream didn't fade away and the pony was still there so she supposed this was one of the quirks Jaxon had told her about. Trust him to leave out some important details.

"That's me," she finally managed to say, sticking up a hand to get the pony's attention.

Pinkie gasped in delight. She did that a lot. "Hihihi!" She said. She did that a lot, too. "I'm Pinkie Pie, your brand new teaching buddy!"

"And you seem very excited about that," Paige said, amused. "I'll be honest here, I didn't expect a pony."

Did anyone expect a pony upon arrival?

"Nopony ever does," Pinkie said sadly. "Apparently, horses in human worlds are all really boring."

"Oh, I don't know," Paige said, shrugging one shoulder. "I haven't really thought them boring before. Just...horse like."

They did what they were born to do. "But, it seems like I've been missing out on the true potential of horses."

"They don't even sing," Pinkie said. Because that was the true indicator of boringness. "Oh! Speaking of singing, I have welcome song for you!" She pulled a harmonica out of -- somewhere -- and played a middle C. "Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. . . ."

"A song?"

She was far, far away from SciLo. Her last vivid memories of songs were from her childhood in Ireland. After her move to London, music had become less important.

"You didn't have to do that..." Not that she thought she could stop Pinkie, though.

Not really, no.

"Welcome, welcome, welcome!" Pinkie began. "A fine welcome to you! Welcome, welcome, welcome, I say how do you do? Welcome, welcome, welcome, we say hip hip hooray, welcome, welcome, welcome to Fandom High todaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay!"

A blast of confetti fired from the cannon on her welcome wagon, and a cake popped out of the oven. "Wow, I didn't get them mixed up, this time!"

"That's quite a thing," she said, a little astonished with the display. Couldn't help but crack a small smile because she hadn't really encountered enthusiasm like this before.

"Thank you," she added after a moment. "I've never quite been welcomed like that before anywhere. This is a first for me."

"Well, I'm excited to be your first!" Er. "Are you looking forward to teaching here in Fandom? What are you going to teach? I'm teaching baking with my very best human friend Derek. We could make you some cupcakes!"

"I'm really not sure what to expect," Paige answered honestly. She hadn't asked for details (and she really should have) before leaving London. "And I'm teaching a class about the occult."

Again, not her choice but Jaxon seemed to think himself funny. "So, I guess we'll see how I do before I answer the question about looking forward to teaching anything."

And of course the pony baked too. Of course. "You really don't need to worry about cupcakes for me. I'm sure you've far better things to do for your class."

"Oh poo," Pinkie said, flipping a hoof in what was apparently a cross-species gesture of "it's nothing". "I could whip them up in a jiff! I used to live at a bakery back in Ponyville, where I'm from, and Mr. and Mrs. Cake let me help all the time."

"I'm beginning to doubt that I could talk you out of the cupcakes," she said with a quiet snicker. "I wouldn't turn them down, of course."

She couldn't remember the last time she'd had sweets like that.

Pinkie would be shocked to hear that. She basically lived on sugar. "Most folks don't even try," she said happily. "I have quite a lot of personality."

"I'm realizing that," Paige said, nodding. "Much more than most anyone I've met. I won't talk you out of it but perhaps start slow? I haven't had sweets in the last several years. I'm sure I'll need to give myself time to adjust."

You could practically see Pinkie's mind boggle. "None at all?" That was one of the saddest things Pinkie could think of! "Well, maybe a muffin then, to start out with. With fruit!"

[identity profile] thepaledreamer.livejournal.com 2014-01-04 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
"They weren't really available where I'm from," Paige said carefully. "Unfortunate but true. I'd appreciate the muffin, though. And I'm sure my stomach would appreciate it as well."

"Muffins it is, then!" Pinkie decided. "Do you have a favorite fruit? Or maybe nuts? I can make them with either, or, oo, both!"

No favorite then. . . . yet. Pinkie was determined to discover what that favorite might be. "Yay!" She clapped her hooves together. "So where are you from that doesn't have any sweets? Is it very sad there?"

"A very, very different version of London though I was born in Ireland," Paige shared, hands finding their way into the pockets of her jacket. "I guess it could be called sad, yes. I tend to think of it more as...resigned."

Re: Meet Your Teachers [Spring 2014]

[personal profile] locointhecoco 2014-01-05 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
That sounded almost worse than sad. "Well, it's nothing like resigned here," Pinkie said. "Though sometimes scary things come to the island. Or teleport folks away from it. But most times it's real nice!"

[identity profile] thepaledreamer.livejournal.com 2014-01-05 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, the always present scary things. Paige knew that term well. But, after the Emim, she was pretty desensitized to the scary.

"I'll be fine with the times that it's real nice," she said with a brief nod. "It'll be a nice change of pace for me. And friends of mine would say that's a good thing."
