Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

It was a new year, and with the new year came the new spring term, and Fandom High was all set to welcome its new students, along with those just returning from holiday trips home. It was a familiar setting for the latter bunch: there was the requisite bonfire, with tables and chairs scattered around it, as well as the buffet table with ~~moddable~~ warm food and drinks.

And of course, name tags and lists of Big and Little Siblings as well as roommates. Yep, the weather was okay (if snowy) for early January, and Fandom was all ready to celebrate the start of a new term.

[OCD up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Yeah, Electroclash had managed to drag her arse out here for this. In uniform, although with a coat over it.

She was staying close to a bonfire, thanks.

"Great coat," Mindy marveled. When looking for a way to strike up conversation with someone who looked like a fellow teacher, just compliment her fashion choices, right? "I'm Mindy. I'm new. Have you been teaching here long?"

The coat had been picked for warmth, rather than style, so... Mostly it earned Mindy a raised eyebrow. Although admittedly that might've happened no matter what she'd said. Electroclash's social skills, man.

"Two years," she said. "But I'm just the guidance counselor again now. Name's Electroclash."

Did that explain the go-go boots?

"Whoa. Cool name." She meant it, too. "Sounds like something Kanye and Nicki Minaj would name their baby."

She paused and held up a hand in case Electroclash was about to protest. "I know they're not a couple yet, but I just, I can tell it's going to happen eventually."

Yeah, no matter how accurate an idea that actually was, Electroclash had no idea who either of those people were.

"It's a cape name."

"Sorry, is that British slang or something?" Mindy asked politely. "The only slang I learned when I was on vacation in London was the difference between chips and crisps."

"I'm a cape." She knew that probably wouldn't be enough. She'd been on Fandom long enough to get the newbie thing. "A superhero?"

"What?"

An eloquent response.

"You don't mean just because you help kids with their problems, do you?"

"No." She opened her coat enough for a better look at the uniform underneath. "I mean I dress like this and fight crime and shit."

"Cute dress," Mindy observed before she caught up and realized, "Oh, it's a costume."

...Okay then. This was weird news.

Electroclash shrugged and wrapped the coat around herself again.

"Told you."

"And when you're not fighting crime, you give life advice to teenagers?"

She wasn't sure she had it in her to be as shocked as she should have been. Instead she noted, "That would make a good comic book movie."

Snort. "Yeah, it really wouldn't."

There was an extensive comic and movie industry revolving around real-life capes where she was from. She knew what she was talking about.

"Well, if this place is going to have superheroes, at least they're nice to look at," James said, checking out the uniform. "James Sanders. New teacher. Nice to meet ya."

He got points just for being able to identify her as a cape.

Electroclash nodded at him. "Electroclash. Guidance counselor. Jury's still out on that last thing."

"Juries are usually pretty quick to convict me of being charming," James said.

Electroclash snorted.

"Sounding a little smarmy there, Sanders."

"Right, it was 'smarmy,' not 'charming,'" James said. "Eh. Close enough in my book."

"Weirdly not so in most other people's." Although Excelsor might have seen eye to eye with him on that one. "Might want to work on that."

"I will, I promise," James said. "But it might help to have some guidance, counselor. Maybe over drinks? See what happens?"

"Would you be paying for these drinks?"

What? You had to take what you got, sometimes.

"Well, if somebody has to pay for it, sure," James said. "But keep the fact that I'm on a teacher's salary in mind."

Electroclash shrugged one shoulder and pulled her coat tighter around herself. "We're all on a teacher's salary here, mate."

"That's not gonna stop me from complaining about it," James said. "And who knows, maybe they pay guidance counselors more. If you ask me and promise me that it won't come out of my pay, I think they should."

"They don't play guidance counselors more," Electroclash informed him. "Don't know if it's different for ones who didn't come here to do community service, though."
