Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

It was a new year, and with the new year came the new spring term, and Fandom High was all set to welcome its new students, along with those just returning from holiday trips home. It was a familiar setting for the latter bunch: there was the requisite bonfire, with tables and chairs scattered around it, as well as the buffet table with moddable warm food and drinks.

And of course, name tags and lists of Big and Little Siblings as well as roommates. Yep, the weather was okay (if snowy) for early January, and Fandom was all ready to celebrate the start of a new term.

[OCD up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Chuck swung by the roommate list eventually. It wasn't like he wasn't used to sharing rooms-- hell, he'd had a great lot of more roommates to a room once.

Didn't mean he wasn't going to glower in the direction of the list. Just... that had a lot to do with him glowering at everything today.

To make up for it, Max parked his tiny bulldog arse on Chuck's foot and panted happily at everyone who passed by.

With Theo gone back home, Raven was also on the look out for a new roommate. Really, it was like her first picnic all over again. At least this time she wasn't quietly freaking out about rooming with a boy. Theo had been a perfect gentleman, after all. She expected no less from this Chuck person.

Naturally, she managed to make eye contact with Max first. "Oh! Aren't you just the sweetest!"

Well, that clearly couldn't be aimed at Chuck.

Both Chuck and Max turned their heads towards Raven simultaneously, though the bulldog obviously looked happier about it. He pulled his behind off of Chuck's foot and dashed as closely towards Raven as his leash would let him.

Raven moved forward and crouched down to greet Max properly. "Hi!" She said. "What's your name?" She looked up at Chuck.

Oh. He didn't look nearly as friendly.

"His name," Chuck said, sounding only a little annoyed, really, "is Max. Hello."

... Wait.

Wait.

Elsa was still wrapping her head around the idea of having a school-assigned sibling and a roommate. Nobody had mentioned this bit.

"William?"

That was not a girls' name!

Evan was chewing his lip as he looked at the new roommate list. It wasn't that he didn't want a new roomie. He did! And hopefully they wouldn't mind that he had a dog - who was currently sitting at the end of a leash at his feet, tongue lolling happily and tail wagging at a mile a minute - and that his books tended to migrate to all corners of the room when he let them.

More than that, though, maybe they wouldn't mind that his French was... minimal. Sure, he'd been cloned and raised by a man who spoke with a French accent, but he was pretty sure Fantomex wasn't actually French, any more than he was from Kansas. And he was almost positive that his new roommate didn't have 'elephant' in their name, but that's how his brain kept trying to parse that last name, there.

Cosette had never had a dog -- well, the Thénardiers had had one and she'd been quite fond of it, but that was long ago and she hardly remembered it any more. That probably boded well, though.

It hadn't occurred to her that her roommate might be a boy -- she'd resigned herself to everything in America being very different, including names. That was, unfortunately, not the reason for her surprised expression when she spotted Evan. Sorry, Evan.

Honestly, Evan was kind of used to looks like that. He tended to be a magnet for them.

"Um, excuse me?" He was putting on his best unsure-but-game smile, here. "You wouldn't happen to be Miss... Miss... uh..." Oh no. He had to say it. "Euphrasie?"

You-fray-see? Please?

It took Cosette a moment or two to recover herself, but she did so with some determination.

"Yes, that's me, only call me Cosette, please," she said, doing her absolute best not to stare and largely succeeding at that. How did Euphrasie turn into Cosette? She didn't know. "Am I to be living with you?"

Oh, Cosette was much easier. Evan gave a relieved little smile, both at the simpler name, and the fact that she didn't seem to be gaping as much, now.

"It looks like it, yeah. I'm Evan, and this," he nodded down at the dog, who was happily panting up at her, wagging his tail enthusiastically, "is Ozzy."

Alana still missed Danny and his amazing powers of dance, but she figured the cushy situation of having a room to herself wasn't going to last forever. So it wasn't with any disappointment that she spotted her name on the roomie list and leaned against a tree to wait for Celia, nametag affixed to her chest.

Celia looked like a girl's name to her, so she figured once she'd explained the whole Landfallians-have-wings thing to her the awkward part would be over.

Re: Meet Your Roommate [Spring 2014]

[identity profile] pasunereveuse.livejournal.com 2014-01-04 02:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Celia was grateful that her new roommate hadn't taken to standing on a table and screaming her name as her sibling had, but it did take a little more legwork to find her, this way. She tried to be discreet as she hunted around for a girl bearing the correct name tag. (Alana was a girl's name, wasn't it? What if it wasn't? Oh dear god.)

She was so happy with her success when she did find Alana that she didn't even register the wings at first -- everyone here looked strange, anyway. "Are you Alana? I think we're to be roommates."

Similarly, Alana registered Celia's old-fashioned clothes, but didn't know how to interpret them. From her point of view, plenty of Earthlings dressed funny.

She beamed back at Celia, holding out her hand for the other girl to shake. "Hi, nice to meet you. Don't worry, I don't bite or anything."

"Celia Bowen. It's a pleasure," she replied, delicately shaking Alana's offered hand. She frowned a little, and added. "I don't bite, either. Is that something I need to worry about here?"

It wouldn't really surprise her, at this rate.

Alex was at the picnic for the usual reasons: the potential to meet new people and free food. So it was a bit of a surprise when she saw her name on the roommates list. Well, like most things in her life lately, she just kind of rolled with it. It wasn't like she had a whole lot of stuff to move, anyway.

Jeffrey, huh? This would be interesting.

It sure would be interesting. So would the piercing whistle aimed in her direction. Joker waved a crutch in the air and then resumed slowly making his way toward her. "Please tell me you're Alexandra?" he called. "Because I'm just about done with walking for today."

Re: Meet Your Roommate [Spring 2014]

[identity profile] lil-nikita.livejournal.com 2014-01-04 07:45 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yeah, that's me. Alex. You must be Jeffrey?" she replied when she heard the guy talking to her. Noticing the crutches, she said, "You can take a break now."

[identity profile] fly-so-serious.livejournal.com 2014-01-04 08:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, that definitely clinched it -- the list wasn't a mistake, and he was rooming with a girl. This was going to be all kinds of weird and awkward, wasn't it? He stopped his hobbling, grateful for the rest.

"'Jeff'," he corrected her. "...Or 'Joker'. My friends call me Joker. This is... Do they normally put boys and girls together in the same room? Most places try to avoid that."

Mordin was pleased to have been assigned a roommate. He hoped Eleanor Lamb would be pleased to have him, as well. He was quiet, and neat, and meticulous, and hardly ever slept anyhow.

And he wanted a dog. A big dog, something with teeth like a varren. He'd recently decided that a loyal guard dog would be good protection against the oddness of Fandom.

But huge furry things with teeth weren't the sort of thing a roommate would worry about, right? He was still going to be a great roommate.

Re: Meet Your Roommate [Spring 2014]

[identity profile] nobloodymessiah.livejournal.com 2014-01-04 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Eleanor was considerably calmer after her modded because ongoing conversation with her new big s--- ... friend, Raven. And so she was going to lug her suitcase to the other table and see if she could learn where she was supposed to be.

She wasn't used to the name 'Mordin' -- male? female? Surely they wouldn't have her room with a boy, would they?

And then she noticed the other person standing near the table, and did her level best not to gawk.

What had he done to himself? She had seen splicers in various stages of decay, but this Mordin no longer looked human. His head was entirely misshapen; his eyes were far too large. He wasn't as far gone as Dr. Alexander, thankfully, but that was hardly saying much.

She cleared her throat, reminding herself that Jeff had told her it was rude to point out abnormalities, even if they were apparent. Somehow, such things were distasteful to discuss.

"Mordin?" she asked. But though she had stopped staring, she couldn't help adding, "Are you all right?"

[identity profile] sciencesalarian.livejournal.com 2014-01-05 05:23 am (UTC)(link)
"Absolutely fine, fine," Mordin replied earnestly, because it was cold, but there were warmed vegetables. "Would be Eleanor? Wonderful to meet you. My promise to only bring deceased insects into the room."

Re: Meet Your Roommate [Spring 2014]

[identity profile] nobloodymessiah.livejournal.com 2014-01-05 05:40 am (UTC)(link)
Eleanor was going to try to keep up with that. His diction was odd, but he seemed entirely cheerful, and not at all like the thoroughly demented splicers she'd -- oh.

"Are you an alien?" she asked, because Raven had rather helpfully pointed out that there were several of those about. That would be a relief, actually, because if he had spliced himself into that shape from a basic human form, she wasn't entirely sure it was possible to get him back.

"Oh, sorry. Yes. I'm Eleanor. I ... won't bring dead insects in, either." Wait, she had that backwards. "I mean, live ones, rather."

[identity profile] notvenom.livejournal.com 2014-01-05 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
And now Anya was, apparently, roomed with some Will West.

"Will as in guy Will?"

Oh this was going to be interesting.
