Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

It was a new year, and with the new year came the new spring term, and Fandom High was all set to welcome its new students, along with those just returning from holiday trips home. It was a familiar setting for the latter bunch: there was the requisite bonfire, with tables and chairs scattered around it, as well as the buffet table with moddable warm food and drinks.

And of course, name tags and lists of Big and Little Siblings as well as roommates. Yep, the weather was okay (if snowy) for early January, and Fandom was all ready to celebrate the start of a new term.

[OCD up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Eleanor was considerably calmer after her modded because ongoing conversation with her new big s--- ... friend, Raven. And so she was going to lug her suitcase to the other table and see if she could learn where she was supposed to be.

She wasn't used to the name 'Mordin' -- male? female? Surely they wouldn't have her room with a boy, would they?

And then she noticed the other person standing near the table, and did her level best not to gawk.

What had he done to himself? She had seen splicers in various stages of decay, but this Mordin no longer looked human. His head was entirely misshapen; his eyes were far too large. He wasn't as far gone as Dr. Alexander, thankfully, but that was hardly saying much.

She cleared her throat, reminding herself that Jeff had told her it was rude to point out abnormalities, even if they were apparent. Somehow, such things were distasteful to discuss.

"Mordin?" she asked. But though she had stopped staring, she couldn't help adding, "Are you all right?"

"Absolutely fine, fine," Mordin replied earnestly, because it was cold, but there were warmed vegetables. "Would be Eleanor? Wonderful to meet you. My promise to only bring deceased insects into the room."

Eleanor was going to try to keep up with that. His diction was odd, but he seemed entirely cheerful, and not at all like the thoroughly demented splicers she'd -- oh.

"Are you an alien?" she asked, because Raven had rather helpfully pointed out that there were several of those about. That would be a relief, actually, because if he had spliced himself into that shape from a basic human form, she wasn't entirely sure it was possible to get him back.

"Oh, sorry. Yes. I'm Eleanor. I ... won't bring dead insects in, either." Wait, she had that backwards. "I mean, live ones, rather."

"Alien, yes. Extraterrestrial. From Sur'Kesh. My species called salarian." Maybe he should lead with that next time.

"Do you like canines?" Straight to the point with a species that only had a 40-year lifespan.

"I'm from a few decades from the past," she said, and that seemed to be a helpful bit of information. "From Earth. I grew up under the ocean, so pets were rather expensive. I've never had a dog before, but they seem nice enough."

She gestured to her suitcase. "I haven't much to my name, so my half of the room might be rather sparse. Do you know if there are beds provided?"

She could sleep on the floor. The floor here was far better than a cushy bed anywhere near her mother.

"Past? From a century in the future, myself. Underwater habitable space, though....fascinating. Would love to hear more if you'll share." Mordin got a bit jittery and pace-y, as he often did when something interested him. No one else he'd ever heard of had built an underwater city, excepting the hanar, but that wasn't a feat so much as their natural habitat. "But yes, bed, of course. Bed provided for you."

"I don't mind at all," Eleanor said, pleasantly, "though I fear I may not know all you'd seek to ask. It was a rather interesting society, from a sociological standpoint, but not a very nice place to live."

Extreme free market capitalism had ended very, very badly. Which was sort of inevitable, really.

"Do you have a dog?" He'd asked about them, after all.

"Dog? No, no, no, not yet. Considering. Thought to be polite and ask before adopting. Third creature living in room could be overwhelming. Possible allergies. Phobia. Non-specific aversion." Mordin's idea of thoughtful, but don't expect him to ask to grow bacteria cultures in petri dishes under his bed.

"Not a very nice place to live, but left. Was the pressure stabilization insufficient?" Also don't expect Mordin to think of sociology before physics.

Eleanor was starting to catch on to Mordin's pattern of speech, she thought. "No allergies, no phobia, no aversion," she smiled. "No, the pressure was all right, though some of the citizens grew restless from all the artificial light. Lack of Vitamin D, and psychological problems."

"Of course...how was lack of trade possibilities dealt with? Complete self-sufficiency?" Mordin was tapping his chin thoughtfully. "And oh! Dog, yes, dog. Would love to bring dog into room, barring any objections."

"It was rather a large colony," Eleanor explained, "and there were black market smugglers who would import from other countries, though such activity was illegal. It was one of the few laws that Rapture had."

She beamed. "No objections," she said. "I've never had a pet before. I might like to befriend yours."

Mordin beamed at her in turn. "Excellent, excellent. Furnado is local shelter. Will visit soon."

He tilted his head. "Left Rapture through submarine or portal? Cannot imagine transportation was simple matter."
