Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

It was a new year, and with the new year came the new spring term, and Fandom High was all set to welcome its new students, along with those just returning from holiday trips home. It was a familiar setting for the latter bunch: there was the requisite bonfire, with tables and chairs scattered around it, as well as the buffet table with moddable warm food and drinks.

And of course, name tags and lists of Big and Little Siblings as well as roommates. Yep, the weather was okay (if snowy) for early January, and Fandom was all ready to celebrate the start of a new term.

[OCD up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Cosette had never had a dog -- well, the Thénardiers had had one and she'd been quite fond of it, but that was long ago and she hardly remembered it any more. That probably boded well, though.

It hadn't occurred to her that her roommate might be a boy -- she'd resigned herself to everything in America being very different, including names. That was, unfortunately, not the reason for her surprised expression when she spotted Evan. Sorry, Evan.

Honestly, Evan was kind of used to looks like that. He tended to be a magnet for them.

"Um, excuse me?" He was putting on his best unsure-but-game smile, here. "You wouldn't happen to be Miss... Miss... uh..." Oh no. He had to say it. "Euphrasie?"

You-fray-see? Please?

It took Cosette a moment or two to recover herself, but she did so with some determination.

"Yes, that's me, only call me Cosette, please," she said, doing her absolute best not to stare and largely succeeding at that. How did Euphrasie turn into Cosette? She didn't know. "Am I to be living with you?"

Oh, Cosette was much easier. Evan gave a relieved little smile, both at the simpler name, and the fact that she didn't seem to be gaping as much, now.

"It looks like it, yeah. I'm Evan, and this," he nodded down at the dog, who was happily panting up at her, wagging his tail enthusiastically, "is Ozzy."

"You have a dog!" Cosette knew, on some level, that Father wouldn't like this arrangement at all, but as to why, she had no idea and didn't think it worth fretting about. Besides, there was a dog! "And I don't think he seems to mind me at all."

"He kind of adores anyone who'll play with him," Evan replied, nodding and gesturing down at him. "You can pet him if you like. He won't bite, but he might jump up."

Because people! Peeeeople!

"Pshaw, is that all? See if I mind if he does, he's such a lovely animal," Cosette said, and with that she leaned forward to offer Ozzy a hand.

Really, it probably wouldn't do much harm if he did. Ozzy had all the looks of a husky, but he was neatly corgi-sized, right down to his stubby little legs. He sniffed for a minute, and then he licked at the offered hand, clearly deeming Cosette 'good people' before bouncing up to rest his paws against her leg, his tail going a mile a minute.

"He is really friendly," Evan agreed, laughing softly as he watched, "I mean, just so long as you're not a squirrel. Or sometimes a duck."

He really hoped his roommate never turned into a duck.
