Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

It was a new year, and with the new year came the new spring term, and Fandom High was all set to welcome its new students, along with those just returning from holiday trips home. It was a familiar setting for the latter bunch: there was the requisite bonfire, with tables and chairs scattered around it, as well as the buffet table with moddable warm food and drinks.

And of course, name tags and lists of Big and Little Siblings as well as roommates. Yep, the weather was okay (if snowy) for early January, and Fandom was all ready to celebrate the start of a new term.

[OCD up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"Yeah, that's me. Alex. You must be Jeffrey?" she replied when she heard the guy talking to her. Noticing the crutches, she said, "You can take a break now."

Well, that definitely clinched it -- the list wasn't a mistake, and he was rooming with a girl. This was going to be all kinds of weird and awkward, wasn't it? He stopped his hobbling, grateful for the rest.

"'Jeff'," he corrected her. "...Or 'Joker'. My friends call me Joker. This is... Do they normally put boys and girls together in the same room? Most places try to avoid that."

"Joker. Cool," Alex said with a grin. "And this isn't like most places. Co-ed roommates happen sometimes."

Joker shrugged. "Well, all right, then." He held up his right hand. "I hereby solemnly swear: no underwear on the floor, no leaving the seat up, not too much farting or nose-picking, and no peeking."

"I appreciate that," Alex said, still smiling.

She shook his hand. "And I promise not to listen to music too loud unless you want me to, or to use one of those crutches as a weapon against gremlins."

Both were things that could happen.

"If the music's meant to be loud, then I'm probably okay with it being loud," Joker told her with a grin. "Although warn me before you crank the Batarian death folk, because I like my eardrums intact."

He waved a crutch at her. "And these babies are a carbon fiber composite. They could probably take a bullet without cracking. You need 'em to play whack-a-mole with imaginary creatures, all you have to do is ask."
