Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

It was a new year, and with the new year came the new spring term, and Fandom High was all set to welcome its new students, along with those just returning from holiday trips home. It was a familiar setting for the latter bunch: there was the requisite bonfire, with tables and chairs scattered around it, as well as the buffet table with moddable warm food and drinks.

And of course, name tags and lists of Big and Little Siblings as well as roommates. Yep, the weather was okay (if snowy) for early January, and Fandom was all ready to celebrate the start of a new term.

[OCD up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

He'd put on the name tag because he'd been told that was part of the program. He was already thinking about peeling it back off. He didn't have time for this shit.

Conversely, the puppy at his feet looked like it was about to have a joygasm at the mere existence of everything.

Isabelle had signed up to be a big sibling on a whim. Alec had done it, and based on that, she thought she'd have no trouble handling it. So, she looked pretty pleased with herself, having slapped her nametag on to the chest of her dress (every day was a dress day for Izzy, especially with killer heeled winter boots) and then scanning the crowd until she spotted the other nametag she was looking for.

"Hi!" she said, as she approached. "Chuck, right?"

He was cute, so she had pretty much already gotten what she'd wanted out of this experiment.

Did he sound unimpressed? Yep. Like this was a waste of his time? Yep. Had Max just run up to Isabelle to nuzzle her ankle? Yep.

Did Isabelle look like she didn't give a damn what he thought about this situation, and was going to be fabulous regardless? Yep.

She crouched togive Max a few scritches, because at least someone seemed to appreciate her presence as they should. "Yes. Isabelle Lightwood."

"Siblings?" Elsa's face fell a little once she realized she was going to have to contend with more than just a roommate around here. The expression only lasted a moment before she steeled herself and tried to shake it off, though. This was the situation she'd stepped into in order to get some distance from Anna... she'd have to adjust to it. Going back to Arendelle right now was not an option.

Being tall had its advantages during situations like these since Isaac could tower over most people to read their name tags easily. "Elsa?"

Needless to say, Sparkle had made a breakaway to here from the radio station.

"Did I make it?" He looked around, and then, noting with some relief that the picnic was still in full swing, he stepped up onto a picnic table and yelled out at the top of his lungs, "CELIA? I'M LOOKING FOR A CELIA OVER HERE."

... Sorry, Celia. It was semi-Sparkle-has-a-sibling tradition.

"Here!" Celia shot a gloved hand into the air, flailing it in a wave as she made her way over to the boy who was shouting. And now people would be looking, so she tried to keep her fast-reddening face shielded by her hat until her blush subsided. "I'm Celia. You don't need to shout. Are you...Sparkle?"

They really liked sparkly things here, didn't they?

They loved Sparkly things here! Sparkle could get behind that, if this place wasn't so freaking messed up.

"That'd be me, yeah," Sparkle replied with a knowing smirk as he hopped down off the picnic table again. Aw, this one was a blusher. "Your new sibling. I'm supposed to be like showing you around and junk, telling you where to go if you want to get drinks without being carded, warning you about the local wildlife and weather patterns, and, I dunno, showing you where you can find condoms if you can't find Dite's."

Welcome to Fandom, Celia! Sparkle wasn't being antagonistic, just... enthusiastic. Honest!

Once again, most of that vocabulary was familiar, but jumbled in a way she didn't quite understand. "What does 'carded' mean, and what are condoms?" she asked, once she'd processed what he'd said. Drinks she understood, and of course he would tell her what to expect with the climate -- that only seemed polite.

Mercy was glad to be a big sibling, but she really hoped she wasn't going to start things off by butchering her little sibling's name.

Luckily, no one ever used Cosette's real name, and she wasn't yet of an age to feel that 'Cosette' was childish.

The idea of being assigned a sibling struck her as odd, but in an amusing way, and she laughed when she found her name tag. She was, however, not quite sure how to put it on, and settled for pinning it to her bonnet instead. That would do, wouldn't it?

Well, that was different. Mercy smiled when she saw the person she assumed was her new sibling.

"You-phrase-ee?" Hopefully, that was close enough to not offend. "Hi, I'm Mercedes Thompson. I'll be your big sister here, help you get settled in and used to this place."

Gert made sure that Old Lace kept her distance while she looked around for her new little sibling. In fact, she directed the dinosaur to hang out near the bonfire. This temperature was not good for dinosaurs.

In the meantime, she grabbed some hot chocolate and snacks that she was hoping her sibling would like, wandering around in search of the right name tag.

For the first time, Will was glad that he'd spent a few months in Wisconsin. It got him used to cold temperatures like this so it didn't really bother him.

He was still bundled up though, jackets, gloves and scarf, while he milled around with, yes, his nametag on display. It seemed to be a thing to do so Will went along with the crowd.

It was Raven's first time as a Big Sibling, and she fussed a bit at her scarf, trying to make sure it wasn't covering her name tag even as she did her best not to look too nervous.

And to keep an eye out for Eleanor Lamb, her new little sister. She didn't forget that part, she'd swear it. She was just a little discombobulated. She knew how to be a little sister, but a big one? That was all new to her.

Eleanor was feeling a touch discombobulated, herself. She tugged Jono's biker jacket (http://fandomhigh.livejournal.com/3525697.html?thread=204027969#t204027969) a little more closely around herself; it helped more with the wind than her simple white shift did. At least the divers' boots kept her feet dry.

She lugged her suitcase towards the table everyone seemed to be milling about; something important must be here. Some sort of registration?

That was when she noticed the sign. Meet Your Big / Little Sibling!

No. What? No. This was where the Little Sisters had sent her?! How could they possibly imagine -- after everything she'd suffered. What they'd all suffered. How could they think she'd join in eagerly for yet another round?

There was a posted list of proposed pair bonds, but her eyes were sliding off the page. She wasn't taking a nametag. She couldn't breathe.

"Excuse me," she said, to whoever was standing near her. And then she bumped her way back out of the crowd. She didn't even see the people around her. She didn't know where she was going. Just ... away from that table. Out of here. How did she get off this island?

Raven knew that look. That was an "oh god, the people at my new school are going to want to kill me as much as the ones at my old school did." Raven might have worn a look like that a time or two, before she got really good at maintaining a more standard appearance.

Her new little sister would have to wait. Raven wasn't about to let that look go without a little bit of reassurance.

"Hey," she called, pitching her voice low to keep from startling the girl too much. "Are you alright?"

Yay! Big Siblings time! Joker had been to summer camp before, so he knew what this meant -- the roulette of whether he was going to get a "Oh, you poor thing!" or a "I can't believe I'm stuck with you!"

He wrote "Jeff M." in big letters on his nametag and stuck it prominently on his chest. He wasn't going to be hobbling around the lawn much on his crutches, so everyone else needed to be able to read it from a distance, after all.

So, now all he had to do was keep an eye out for this Katherine -- Kathy? Katie? Katya?

Definitely Kathy. Katherine was for when her mom was super mad at her. Or when Sarah was being annoying.

...Like over Christmas, when she'd just had to draw Kathy's attention to the fact that she'd gotten a training bra. At 11. As opposed to Kathy's own 14. Which wasn't embarrassing in the least, really.

It was also not anything she was going to be bringing up to Jeff when she met him. Little brothers had to be better than little sisters, right?

"Jeff?" she called, reluctantly tugging down her scarf. It was stupidly cold out now. "Jeff?"

And--wait! There was someone with that nametag! Woo! She trotted over to him and gave him a big smile. "Hey, Jeff. I'm Kathy, your new big sister."

No pity or disdain yet, woo!

Joker tucked his crutch in his armpit so he could offer her a hand to shake. "Hi! And I'm Jeff, your new little burden! Or people call me 'Joker', too. I have to warn you, if we're doing any big sib/little sib games as part of the orientation experience, you're kind of SOL. That thing where you have to carry an egg on a spoon back and forth? Not gonna happen."
