Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

It was a new year, and with the new year came the new spring term, and Fandom High was all set to welcome its new students, along with those just returning from holiday trips home. It was a familiar setting for the latter bunch: there was the requisite bonfire, with tables and chairs scattered around it, as well as the buffet table with moddable warm food and drinks.

And of course, name tags and lists of Big and Little Siblings as well as roommates. Yep, the weather was okay (if snowy) for early January, and Fandom was all ready to celebrate the start of a new term.

[OCD up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"Gotcha." She nodded. "Well, this place could be worse. You get a little more freedom here than some schools, at least. But there are aspects that take some adjusting to, so there's that to be aware of."

She held out the cup she'd grabbed from one of the snack tables. "Hot chocolate? The free food is weirdly good."

"Sure, thanks," Will said, taking the drink and sipping it. He took in her words, processing them quietly for a moment. Last school he'd been at, there'd been plenty of freedom so hew as a little curious to see how this place measured up.

"I'm pretty quick to adjust," he added after a second. "Maybe an hour or two and I'll be good."

Gert was kind of thinking, Yeah, we'll see.

"So... where're you from?" she wondered. "'Cause people here come from all over. Like, all over. For instance, I'm from LA, and I have a friend here who's from some other galaxy a few thousand years in the future."

Maybe a little too quick with that reveal? Yeah, probably.

"As of late? Wisconsin," Will told her, taking another few sips and letting it warm him up. "Before that, the Ojai Valley. And I'm definitely not from a few thousand years in the future."

That was a new one. He'd seen a lot lately, come to believe almost anything but still. "Guess the Earth hasn't been eaten by the sun in the future, huh?"

She shrugged. "I think it's a dimension thing," she said. "Like people are from different universes with different... features and stuff? Stop me if this is too weird."

"It's fine."

He could deal. One of his dad's rules (#72: WHEN IN A NEW PLACE, ACT LIKE YOU’VE BEEN THERE BEFORE) had floated to the forefront of his brain, giving him guidance.

"I read a lot of science fiction stuff," Will said. It wasn't a complete lie but it wasn't the complete truth either.

"So yeah, there's some diverse backgrounds in the people you'll meet," she said, relieved that he seemed to be taking it well. "You could probably use some evidence, I'm guessing, so..."

She whistled twice, and her seven-foot pet deinonychus trotted over. Gert looked sheepishly up at Will. "My pet dinosaur. Old Lace, Will; Will, Old Lace."

For a second, Will thought the big dinosaur coming towards them was a creature from the Never-Was. His eyes briefly widened before Gert's words pushed into his head and settled him down.

Sort of.

"Dinosaur, huh?" He gave Old Lace a wave. "Hey, Old Lace. Gotta say, I've only seen you guys in textbooks and at museums."

Pleased to be appreciated, Old Lace gingerly nosed at Will's hand.

"OL," Gert cautioned, unecessarily but just in case. "Gentle."

Back to Will, she added, "Yeah, so there's weird stuff like that. I think there's a pony on the faculty? So just... keep an open mind."

She tapped her foot on the ground for a moment, thinking.
