Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

It was a new year, and with the new year came the new spring term, and Fandom High was all set to welcome its new students, along with those just returning from holiday trips home. It was a familiar setting for the latter bunch: there was the requisite bonfire, with tables and chairs scattered around it, as well as the buffet table with moddable warm food and drinks.

And of course, name tags and lists of Big and Little Siblings as well as roommates. Yep, the weather was okay (if snowy) for early January, and Fandom was all ready to celebrate the start of a new term.

[OCD up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"I feel as though I ought to pinch myself," Cosette admitted. "We only just arrived in America a few days ago, my father and I, and it was all I could do to keep myself from turning the lights on and off and on again for hours on end just because I could. And now to come here and --"

She gestured up toward the castle.

"Find out I'll be living there, it's hard to believe all of this is real."

"It is pretty amazing," Mercy agreed, smiling fondly at Cosette. "I know I feel very lucky to be here - maybe not for the same reasons, but still."

It was very easy to like her new sibling. She seemed like such a darling.

"What brought you here?" Cosette asked, curious and eager. "My father suddenly got it into his head to move out of Paris. I don't know why; I think perhaps my uncle's death affected him more than he'll say."

"I, uh..." Mercy shrugged a little uncomfortably. "I had to leave my home, the place where I grew up - which... I don't mind telling you about, but it's kind of a long story." Seemed like most of her life before Fandom was a long story. "So I ended up at my Mom's house, but it turned out she had a whole new family that didn't know about me and that she'd never told me about."

She took a deep breath. "I'm... different. Not like normal people. And even though they were really nice to me, it was hard for me to fit in and I knew I was making things stressful on the family, so I ended up here. It's a good place for people who don't fit in. A really good place."
