Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

It was a new year, and with the new year came the new spring term, and Fandom High was all set to welcome its new students, along with those just returning from holiday trips home. It was a familiar setting for the latter bunch: there was the requisite bonfire, with tables and chairs scattered around it, as well as the buffet table with ~~moddable~~ warm food and drinks.

And of course, name tags and lists of Big and Little Siblings as well as roommates. Yep, the weather was okay (if snowy) for early January, and Fandom was all ready to celebrate the start of a new term.

[OCD up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Isabelle had signed up to be a big sibling on a whim. Alec had done it, and based on that, she thought she'd have no trouble handling it. So, she looked pretty pleased with herself, having slapped her nametag on to the chest of her dress (every day was a dress day for Izzy, especially with killer heeled winter boots) and then scanning the crowd until she spotted the other nametag she was looking for.

"Hi!" she said, as she approached. "Chuck, right?"

He was cute, so she had pretty much already gotten what she'd wanted out of this experiment.

"Yeah," Chuck drawled. "You'll be my sibling then, right?"

Did he sound unimpressed? Yep. Like this was a waste of his time? Yep. Had Max just run up to Isabelle to nuzzle her ankle? Yep.

Did Isabelle look like she didn't give a damn what he thought about this situation, and was going to be fabulous regardless? Yep.

She crouched togive Max a few scritches, because at least someone seemed to appreciate her presence as they should. "Yes. Isabelle Lightwood."

"So I take it you're supposed to run me through the basics... point me to where the mess is... let me in on all the high school cliques?"

One part of that sentence was sarcastic. Guess which.

"I don't know about the last thing ––" Because she'd only gone to high school for the past fall, and Fandom and cliques didn't really happen enough for her to notice. "–– but yes, those things. And also warn you about the gremlins and the random sex changes. Oh, and invasions."

She tilted her head thoughtfully as she straightened back up. "But personally I find the invasions refreshing, rather than something to warn people about."

"Right," Chuck said.

He could've said, 'what are you talking about?'. Or 'are you taking the piss?'. Or 'invasions?!'.

'Right' about covered it.

"This is the part where you don't believe me, and/or get me," Isabelle filled in, ever so helpfully. "Even if you'll turn out to be too much of a tough guy to say it."

She was from a race of warriors. Did you really think she couldn't predict that type?

"This is the part where I decide you're wasting my time," said Chuck, who was indeed better equipped for the 'invasions' end of Isabelle's list than, say, the genderswap one.

Because he was a tough guy.

Isabelle waved a hand and tossed her hair over her shoulder. "Well, I guess if you prefer the surprise element in waking up with breasts or a completely different face and personality..."

Like Chuck was ever going to believe that? "What the hell are you talking about?" he demanded. "If this is your idea of a hazing, I suggest you give up. Now."

"Please, like I a girl like me doesn't have better things to do than haze new kids," she scoffed. "It's not my fault Fandom is a weird place and sounds implausible to mundanes."

"To what?"

Oh, this was going well.

Awesomely, even.

"Mundanes."

"I'm sorry," Chuck said, wriggling his finger expressively in one ear. "You might want to repeat that again, because it sounded like you just called me 'mundane'."

Isabelle raised her eyebrows, the picture of innocence.

"Have you ever met a werewolf? A fae? Anyone who does blood magic?"

"I don't waste my time at ren faires," Chuck sneered. "No one's got time for that."

Least of all the kind of person who could get away with calling anyone mundane.

This eye roll was very predictable.

"Congrats, you've just proven yourself to be a mundie."

"Sorry, sweetheart," Chuck said, stepping back. "I'm not going to waste my time on the president of the Geek Squad, either."

... This eye roll came off bored. Although Isabelle contemplated tackling him into the ground for a second. Just to make a point.

But she could save showing off her superiority for later.

"All the stories are real, little mundie," she said instead. "You're lucky you're cute. Otherwise I might've not even given you this much of a warning."

And for a moment, Chuck contemplated punching her. Brain twins! --or that was just the kind of effect Chuck had on people. Maybe a bit of both.

"Whatever," he said eloquently, snagging Max's leash and ~~flouncing~~ stalking out.

Guess you were going to have to find out about the island the hard way, Chuck.
