Valentine's Day Dance. The Gym. 8.30 pm

The gym was decorated, the DJs were playing, and the punch was not yet spiked.

Fandom High's Valentine's Day Dance had begun.

Sam took a look around the room and headed over towards Peter. She saw his suit, looked down at her own black leather pants and silver silk shirt and mentally groaned. Why hadn't she known it was semi-formal? "Hi, Peter. I'm underdressed. How're you?"

It took Peter a moment to stop admiring Sam's outfit because, y'know, teenage boy seeing leather pants. But after that, he said, "Slightly miserable, trying not to let that keep me down. There are couples to be mocked. There will surely be dancing to be mocked. It shouldn't be hard to get into a decent mood."

"As far as your outfit, I wouldn't worry about it. It's a dance of misery. Wear what you want to, dammit!"

Dances, definitely not somewhere Mac's comfortable, although shockingly, she did actually dress up. Heading to the corner of people least likely to be requesting love-songs, definitely seems like a good choice.

"Hey, I've come to join the ranks of snarky and unattached. You lot found any good mocking material yet?"

"Hey, Mac," Peter said. "Not yet, but the night is young and the punch seems to be unspiked. So there's plenty of time."

"I think I might avoid the punch this evening. Just in case." She pulls a face, "I already have this mental image of myself doing something humiliating. I'd prefer not to make it reality".

"The punch is probably okay for now. I figure you have at least a half hour to safely get a drink." Peter shrugged. "But I'm right there with you about not wanting to make a fool of myself. That's why I'm not moving from this corner unless I'm dragged off."

"Staying right here is probably a wise move. I will be doing the same, at least until the sappy music gets to me, then I'll go sit in the corridor or something." She gave a half-smile. "Crowds really aren't my thing, at all".

Peter looked around and smiled. "Ironically, this corner seems to be the biggest crowd around. Funny how that works out."

"That just tells us we aren't alone in being bitter and single, which is a little reassuring." She shrugged, "and I guess people are avoiding the dancefloor, which is kinda normal when it comes to school dances. At least for the first half-hour or so. I'm sure that'll change soon enough."

"I got dumped last month. Valentine's Day is evil." Peter felt this explained it all.

"'Dance of Misery' was implied with the words 'Valentine's Day.'" He nodded for emphasis.

"Oh, yikes," Sam said, wincing. "Sorry about that. If it makes you feel any better, I had to break up with my boyfriend's answering machine because I never saw him. Wednesday."

"Ouch," Peter cringed. "I think you win. Not only do you get to wear whatever the hell you want, but you also get to attempt to drown somebody in the punch bowl if you want. It's the rules."

"Remember you said that when I end up in detention." Sam eyed the punch bowl and wondered if it had been spiked yet.

"I'll provide a distraction if you need. Just say the word," Peter joked. Probably joked.

Peter held up his cup. "And it's still safe as of five minutes ago if you want to risk it. No, nobody has been drowned in it, either."

"Hey Sam!" Isabel said. "Ready to have fun?"

"Oh yeah. Can't you tell?" She noticed Isabel's dress. "You look nice."

"Come on, this is just like being in the common room the other night. Except we're slightly better dressed," Isabel grinned. "You look great. I love your pants."

"We clean up okay," Sam said, wiggling slightly. It'd been a while since she wore leather. "And thanks. Though I can't take credit for the shoes. Those are Parker's."

"Parker has incredible taste in shoes. Parker has incredible taste period." Isabel lifted her foot and studied her silver sandels. "I'm just glad I wasn't wearing these on Monday night at Jack's party. They wouldn't have quite as useful for monster kicking."

"Angela and I went off to explore the hotel," she explained. "When we went into the library it was like we entered a bad horror movie. There were weird noises and then we found this weird thing with wings and big teeth."
