The gym was decorated, the DJs were playing, and the punch was not yet spiked.

Fandom High's Valentine's Day Dance had begun.

"Why are you slightly miserable? And let the mocking start. Think there'll be singing?" She smiled at him. "Thanks. Although I don't remember seeing 'dance of misery' on the posters."

"I got dumped last month. Valentine's Day is evil." Peter felt this explained it all.

"'Dance of Misery' was implied with the words 'Valentine's Day.'" He nodded for emphasis.

"Oh, yikes," Sam said, wincing. "Sorry about that. If it makes you feel any better, I had to break up with my boyfriend's answering machine because I never saw him. Wednesday."

"Ouch," Peter cringed. "I think you win. Not only do you get to wear whatever the hell you want, but you also get to attempt to drown somebody in the punch bowl if you want. It's the rules."

"Remember you said that when I end up in detention." Sam eyed the punch bowl and wondered if it had been spiked yet.

"I'll provide a distraction if you need. Just say the word," Peter joked. Probably joked.

Peter held up his cup. "And it's still safe as of five minutes ago if you want to risk it. No, nobody has been drowned in it, either."

Sam grinned. "I'll wait, then. Not the same without additional flavoring."

"Sometimes it's a little too watered down at this point," Peter said. "That little extra flavor is useful on nights like tonight."

"It's true. Sometimes patience is a virtue." She glanced around the room. "So, who would you vote to have covered in a bucket of pig's blood by the end of the night?"

"Hmm. I don't know yet," Peter said as he scanned the crowd. "See anyone wearing a tiara? If so, then she's my choice."

"In this school, it could just as easily be a guy or a puppy in the tiara. Then what?"

"Good point. Well, the first person in a tiara should get the pig's blood, I think. I have no clue where to get pig's blood at this time of night - or at all during the day - so I'll leave that up to someone else."

"To mock," Peter said. "And because if StuCo members didn't come, Professor Lyman would give us the evil eye next week."

"Ah." Sam looked over at where Professor Lyman was talking to Dr. Pevensie. "Yeah, I don't know that I would have wanted that to happen to me, either."

"Also, I knew there would be other single people here and that we'd probably band together, and I thought that part could be pretty fun. And I'm enjoying myself, so it looks like I called it right," Peter said.

"I'm glad to hear that. You deserve to have some fun here." Peter shrugged. "It's just too bad it didn't take having to dunk someone's head in the punch bowl to get you to this point. That would have been funny."
