Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The weather was just as hazy, hot and humid as a typical July on the East Coast of the United States could get, but the sun was shining brightly, which was kind of a rarity this summer.

It wasn't raining anything weird, the teal deer were keeping to themselves in the Preserve, and another welcome picnic was underway complete with tables and chairs for chatting around and a buffet table filled (and then some) with all kinds of moddable summer treats.

The lists of new roommates, student siblings and teaching buddies were posted in a prominent location. Now all that was needed were people to enjoy the day!

[OOC: This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic will be in post two in an effort to stop our browsers from dying. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers and townies!

Kaidan wasn't wearing any capes or masks - but he was wearing a military uniform. So... there was that.

If he looked a little absent, well... he was trying to formulate a decent class program in his head. You'd think having personal experience with the subject matter would help, but you'd be mistaken.

Ender was wearing a t-shirt, actually, and a set of pants, and a pair of shoes. And that was about it.

He looked calm, but then he usually did, his eyes set on the crowds.

Anakin was definitely rocking the swirly robe (because who didn't love a swirly robe, even when it was going to crank up to ridiculously hot that afternoon) and keeping his eyes open for the new staff members and students.

With as many years as he had on the island now, he could pick them out by emotions--a handy trick when people showed up with the same faces as people he used to know.

Josh was not great at wearing casual clothes--it came with wearing a suit for almost twenty years--so he was in khakis and a polo instead: the unofficial Washington DC summer wardrobe.

He was still drinking his coffee hot, though. Nothing would stop him from drinking hot coffee--not even July in Maryland.

Since he had an assigned teaching buddy and there might be some new people curious as to who the guy in the black cape and cowl might be, Batman was actually wearing his cape like a normal person might wear a cape; it was almost completely trailing behind him, showing off the bat-emblem like the most personalized nametag ever.

Also, this showed off the fact that he was wearing a spandex-like body armor with the underwear on the outside, and that was always a good way to make sure local people were uncomfortable.

This place had seemed interesting when Hannibal took the job, but he was beginning to suspect there might be more to it than even the brochures had promised. Maybe it had something to do with the bouncing pink horse, the odd skin tones and clothing of several of the students, and the fact that the contact he'd been told to look for was called "Batman".

Well, the environs looked suitably elegant, and at least he wasn't the only one who refused to wear shorts despite the heat. That was promising. Being well acquainted with conferences, he'd come with his own pin-on name tag; his lapels would tolerate that much better than some sticky monstrosity.

The man strutting around with the cape on didn't have a name tag precisely, but the large bat on his chest was certainly suggestive. Hannibal decided to watch him for a little while first.

And what Hannibal would see for that little while was Batman barely moving as he watched the rest of the picnic. And then, finally, he turned toward his brand new teaching buddy. "Ready to speak yet, Doctor Lecter?"

Hannibal raised an eyebrow, nonplussed. So, the man was an observer and fairly blunt. He could work with that. "I take it then you are this 'Batman' I was told to look for?"

"What gave me away?" Batman snarked. Now that introductions were done, Batman took a few steps toward Hannibal, using that as an excuse to swoop his cape into its natural resting position, covering most of his body.

Bruce wasn't sure he had very much expertise to share, but he had been assigned a teaching buddy anyway, which apparently meant he had to attend this picnic thing again. Somehow it was even more overwhelming today than it had been last time - but then, last time he had allowed himself to stick to the fringes of the picnic, while today he was making at least a small effort to stick to places where Kitty might be able to find him.

He had a small plate of food in one hand (for himself) and a couple of bottles of water against his other arm, one for him and one for Kitty.

Oh, look at that, Kitty found him. And honestly, she was glad she got someone she knew she could get along with. "Hey there, teaching buddy."

"Hey, Kitty," Bruce said, sounding about as warm as he ever got. Which wasn't that warm. "Welcome to the faculty."

"Way longer than I have, I'm sure," he said. "Well, the students I had, at least, were on their best behavior. Not huge sharers, though. Pretty much only one kid ever raised his hand. Which could be good or bad for you, I guess."

Pinkie was here, bouncing around like her limbs were made of pogo sticks, looking around at all the new people and keeping an extra special eye out for her newest teaching buddy.

This was her absolute favoritest part of being a teacher at Fandom. New friends showed up all the time, and the island knew that what they really needed right off was a nice big party!

Drac wasn't yawning only through sheer willpower. While he'd been in his coffin, the lid could only keep out so many excited squeals of "Holy Rabies" (http://fandomhigh.livejournal.com/3390682.html?thread=200770266#t200770266) before he gave up and let Mavis drag him out at the unholy hour of dusk.

He was off to the side of the teachers area, staying in the shadows mostly because he wanted to get an idea of what was going on before making his entrance. Not at all because he was stalking keeping an eye on his daughter.

He definitely wasn't wearing a name tag, but how many un-paired teachers were left?

There was a new person she didn't recognize here, and Pinkie had been waiting so long that she didn't even care if he was supposed to be her teaching buddy or not. He was getting her welcome wagon, either way.

"Hihihihihihi!" Pinkie greeted (at least hew as used to excited squealing?). "I'm Pinkie Pie, what's your name?"

Drac raised an eyebrow. Not at the fact that he was faced with a talking pony, but because she was so perky this early.

She was probably young; Mavis' age, even.

But polite was polite and perhaps she would tell her parents about this meeting and they would remember it when they decided to choose a vacation spot, soooo. He gave the pony a small smile. "Hello miss Pie. I am Count Dracula." He gave a small bow, his arm leaving his cape to rest at his middle as he did. "It is pleasant meeting you."

Oh, this was weird. Kitty had been at the picnic a few times before out of curiosity, but she was actually supposed to be here now. She looked kind of happy to be here, though, and she'd left her mask behind years ago.

Jack flashed a quick, relaxed smile at Kitty. "You decided to join us over here?"

He didn't sound surprised. It seemed like teaching was just a thing that happened if you stayed on the island long enough.

Jack was still in the polo shirt and khakis he'd worn to the airport, which struck him as entirely formal enough for a muggy July Saturday. He grazed on food from the buffet as he watched the new students. They kept getting younger.
