Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The weather was just as hazy, hot and humid as a typical July on the East Coast of the United States could get, but the sun was shining brightly, which was kind of a rarity this summer.

It wasn't raining anything weird, the teal deer were keeping to themselves in the Preserve, and another welcome picnic was underway complete with tables and chairs for chatting around and a buffet table filled (and then some) with all kinds of ~~moddable~~ summer treats.

The lists of new roommates, student siblings and teaching buddies were posted in a prominent location. Now all that was needed were people to enjoy the day!

[OOC: This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic will be in post two in an effort to stop our browsers from dying. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers and townies!

Bruce wasn't sure he had very much expertise to share, but he had been assigned a teaching buddy anyway, which apparently meant he had to attend this picnic thing again. Somehow it was even more overwhelming today than it had been last time - but then, last time he had allowed himself to stick to the fringes of the picnic, while today he was making at least a small effort to stick to places where Kitty might be able to find him.

He had a small plate of food in one hand (for himself) and a couple of bottles of water against his other arm, one for him and one for Kitty.

Oh, look at that, Kitty found him. And honestly, she was glad she got someone she knew she could get along with. "Hey there, teaching buddy."

"Hey, Kitty," Bruce said, sounding about as warm as he ever got. Which wasn't that warm. "Welcome to the faculty."

"Thank you," she said. "So, any advice for the newbie here? Let's pretend I haven't been here forever."

"Way longer than I have, I'm sure," he said. "Well, the students I had, at least, were on their best behavior. Not huge sharers, though. Pretty much only one kid ever raised his hand. Which could be good or bad for you, I guess."

"Quiet students," Kitty said, frowning a little. "Are they putting sedatives in the food?"

Pretty sure she was joking.

Bruce chuckled lightly at that. "Very possibly," he granted. "Speaking of which, the cafeteria food isn't actually bad. Albeit possibly drugged."

"I was going to say I didn't know good cafeteria food was a thing, but then I remembered this place is pretty much magic with an extreme budget, so I guess that makes sense," Kitty said thoughtfully.

Or Bruce's standards were just low. Actually, it was almost definitely that one.

"Well, I bet the have to have a lot of different cooks on staff," he mused. "For the students that are dextro-based or need blood in their food and so on. It's not just an issue of pleasing the vegans here."

"I'm not going to think too hard on the blood in the food thing," Kitty decided.

"It probably won't be your blood."

Depending on how good Kitty was at detecting subtle wryness, she might or might not be able to discern that that was a joke.

Kitty grinned. "Well, that's good to know. Though it would be fun to see them try that."

Seriously, watching people not be able to hit or grab her was an endless source of amusement.

"I'd recommend giving an outrageous amount of homework if you want them to give it a shot, but I don't think that's what responsible teaching buddies do," Bruce said wryly. "I could be wrong, though."

Kitty laughed, and said, "Homework might be hard, unless their roommate turns into an animal. Maybe the everlasting threat of detention?"

Wait, hang on. "What are you teaching again?"

"Sentient Pets and You." She really liked saying the name.

"Well, you could always give them those high-maintenance stuffed animals, with the voice boxes," he offered. "If you're really trying to get them to attack you."

"All I can think of is Furbies, and that's downright evil," Kitty said. "And I'm totally giving those out in lieu of detention."

"Well, let me know how that works out," Bruce replied, laughing. "Or if you need any help programming them to be extra horrible."
