Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Whoever worked their magic to ensure that the welcome picnics had nice weather had cut their mojo very close this time around. The weather was lovely today - sunny and hot enough to make it clear that summer in Fandom had finally begun - but the overnight thunderstorms had left puddles all over the lawn that hadn't quite dried up yet.

Still, the tables and chairs had managed to be scattered around, along with the buffet table of moddable food and drinks, and the information table with name tags, the Big and Little Sibling list, and the list of new roommates. The only thing missing was people to enjoy the festivities!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Bruce... had not known that there was going to be a giant picnic full of people (and ponies and dinosaurs), and he sort of wished he'd been able to prepare for this, because crowds of strangers were not his specialty.

He hung off to the side, wondering around when it would be acceptable to excuse himself from this social anxiety nightmare.

Clint had been here juuust long enough to not be surprised by familiar faces, but he was still caught by surprise at which familiar face it was. "Dr. Banner?"

Bruce braced himself for the inevitable conflict caused by someone recognizing him, then turned and realized that he actually already knew this person. "Agent Barton?" he said, mild but surprised. "Are you teaching here?"

"Uh, yeah, sort of. I mean yes," Clint said. "What are you doing here?"

"I'm teaching too," Bruce said, and he had to wonder whether Tony had known this before choosing this school of all places. "Uh, it was Tony's idea."

"Of course it was," Clint said, rolling his eyes. "Natasha's here too. She doesn't teach, she helps me run the gym in town. It's... kind of a long story, I guess."

Uh, yeah, that was right up there with the picnic on the list of things that Bruce wished he'd been warned about.

"I'm sure she'll be thrilled to hear I'm staying here for a while," he said -- when in doubt, he tended to be self-depricating. It was a thing. "Sorry to intrude on your -- is it an assignment? Or a vacation?"

"It's an assignment," Clint said, keeping his voice low and making sure no squirrels were around. "I'm here seeing why this place is so weird, and Natasha's making sure I don't relapse and try to kill everyone."

Because two could play the self-depricating game.

"Yeah," Bruce said, scratching the back of his neck as he often did when he was feeling awkward and trying to find something mild and funny to say to push past it. "Maybe I should have brought Tony along to take point on that for me. Or a big cannon."

Noticing him hanging off to the side, Kitty thought she'd be friendly. "Hey," she said. "You look new."

"Is it the expression or just the new face?" Bruce asked wryly. He held out a hand. "I'm Bruce."

He'd gotten out of the habit of giving his full name to strangers, since, you know, starting mass panic was never great.

"A little bit of both," she smiled, shaking his hand. "I'm Kitty. So where're you from, Bruce?"

"Midwest, originally," Bruce said, because he hadn't learned to give a basic universe overview and a point in the timeline in answer to that sort of question yet. "Sort of all over, more lately. And yourself?"

"Chicago, by way of New York and some other places, by way of Chicago again," she said. "Why all over?"

"I've been doing a... sort of a Doctors Without Borders thing," Bruce explained vaguely. "I know, I'm teaching at a cushy boarding school with apparently limitless free food, but I'm still reacclimatizing to English speakers and running water."

"That's kind of cool," she said honestly. "I promise, though, the language might take some getting used to again, but you'll get used to the running water so fast." Because it was wonderful.

Bruce smiled. "I went right from a place that didn't have any of it to a mansion where an AI talks to you while you're showering," he admitted. "I'm just looking forward to getting to a hotel and appreciating the happy medium."

Because really, JARVIS. Boundaries.

"So do you teach here, Kitty?"

"People don't bite," Tony assured who he was assuming was a new teacher. Unless they raised the age limit on high school. "Well, most of them. I can't guarantee any of it."

Oh god, a teenager. Terrifying!

Wait, Bruce was going to be teaching quite a few teenagers very soon. Like, in three days. He probably needed to start mentally preparing.

"Can't be too careful," he said, aiming for 'wry' and mostly coming across as hopelessly awkward. Which wasn't new. "New world, new ranges of acceptable behavior, like potentially biting..." What were you even saying, Bruce? "Uh, hi. I'm Doctor Banner."

"That's right," Bruce confirmed, crossing his arms awkwardly. "And you are...?"

"You -- really?" Wow. Well, he certainly looked enough like Tony, but without the swagger. Seriously, the lack of swagger was weird. "Sorry, I just spent the last few days staying with... another version of you. He's a little older."

Or a lot older.

Belatedly, Bruce stuck out his hand for Tony to shake. "Nice to meet you."

Bruce shook his hand, still deeply perplexed by the absence of swagger. "No teenagers, I hope?"
