Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Whoever worked their magic to ensure that the welcome picnics had nice weather had cut their mojo very close this time around. The weather was lovely today - sunny and hot enough to make it clear that summer in Fandom had finally begun - but the overnight thunderstorms had left puddles all over the lawn that hadn't quite dried up yet.

Still, the tables and chairs had managed to be scattered around, along with the buffet table of moddable food and drinks, and the information table with name tags, the Big and Little Sibling list, and the list of new roommates. The only thing missing was people to enjoy the festivities!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Noticing him hanging off to the side, Kitty thought she'd be friendly. "Hey," she said. "You look new."

"Is it the expression or just the new face?" Bruce asked wryly. He held out a hand. "I'm Bruce."

He'd gotten out of the habit of giving his full name to strangers, since, you know, starting mass panic was never great.

"A little bit of both," she smiled, shaking his hand. "I'm Kitty. So where're you from, Bruce?"

"Midwest, originally," Bruce said, because he hadn't learned to give a basic universe overview and a point in the timeline in answer to that sort of question yet. "Sort of all over, more lately. And yourself?"

"Chicago, by way of New York and some other places, by way of Chicago again," she said. "Why all over?"

"I've been doing a... sort of a Doctors Without Borders thing," Bruce explained vaguely. "I know, I'm teaching at a cushy boarding school with apparently limitless free food, but I'm still reacclimatizing to English speakers and running water."

"That's kind of cool," she said honestly. "I promise, though, the language might take some getting used to again, but you'll get used to the running water so fast." Because it was wonderful.

Bruce smiled. "I went right from a place that didn't have any of it to a mansion where an AI talks to you while you're showering," he admitted. "I'm just looking forward to getting to a hotel and appreciating the happy medium."

Because really, JARVIS. Boundaries.

"So do you teach here, Kitty?"

...Now Kitty wanted an AI. One that didn't talk in the shower but still.

"Nah. I run one of the bars and settle for dating a teacher instead," she said. "I kind of want to try my hand at the teaching thing one of these times, though. What do they have you doing?"

"First-aid and introductory medicine," Bruce said. "Probably heavier on the first-aid, because contrary to a friend's suggestions, I don't actually want to inspire any kind of meta Breaking Bad operation."

Bruce thought he was fairly hilarious. Nerd humor.

"To be completely honest, if anyone's going to do that here, they probably figured it out years ago and are now running a high-tech lab," Kitty told him. "I think you're safe."

"I just meant we're kind of Smart Kid Central," she explained. "I'm pretty sure we don't have any methheads."

"Okay, much more reassuring," Bruce chuckled. He hadn't really been that worried, but it was good to have that confirmed. "So you mentioned you want to try teaching? What do you think you'll teach?"

"Good question. I mean, there's a lot I could teach," she said, and felt a little braggy admitting that, but it wasn't her fault she was this well-rounded. "Computer science is probably the most obvious."

"Oh, really?" That was interesting! Who didn't like computer science? "Did you study that in college, or...?"

She looked kind of young, actually. Like, student-young.

"It's more natural talent. I'm basically the Goddess of Computing." Modesty? What was that? "I went to school for engineering and astrophysics for a little while, so I got to put those skills to use some. Are you into that stuff?"

"You could say that," Bruce said after a moment. "My specialty is nuclear physics, but I've dabbled a bit in other fields."

"I feel like it's weird to ask you if you've worked on anything I might know, but I really want to ask," she said. Because she seriously read stuff like that for fun.

"Uh." Well, you know. Probably. Bruce scratched the back of his neck, and wow, he was really going to need to keep wearing shirts with collars all through the summer with all the neck-scratching he was doing. "Not so much lately. I've been busy with the travelling and all. But," because he was starting to feel weird about being secretive, "if you see a Dr. Banner in any of the major journals, that's, uh, probably me."
