Library, Wednesday, All Day

Sholeh was thrilled to be back in the library, back to classes, and, best of all, back to human shape again. She was also secretly thrilled not to have been the sister who woke up naked in front of Sparkle and Ulrik (and hadn't yet figured out a way to talk to them and explain anything), though she felt bad that Zhahar had gotten stuck with that instead.

But enough of that. The library had decided to welcome her back by sending out groups of fantasy novels to bother various other parts of the library. Each group had fourteen books at a time in them (which made it hard to get all of them when they scattered) and they kept invading the geology section, the travel section that dealt with famous mountain ranges, and the hobby section--particularly the mountaineering, hiking, and spelunking books.

Sholeh decided it was just better not to even know.

"Hey."

Emily approached the...aide, she supposed, although a really young librarian wouldn't be the weirdest thing she had seen in the island.

"We do have history books in here, right? Of this world." Emily was going to play it as safe as possible.

Emily had no time to reply that she had no interest in any other world because hey, she wasn't only young but...very well dressed. A bit too frilly for Emily's taste, but she wore it well. So Emily would just ignore that.

"The last fifteen years of the history of the United States of America. This world only."

"The books. The books are fans of other books." Were Emily a person with something of a nice sense of humor, she would've let a psychotic laugh right there. But she wasn't, so she just made a mental note on the subject. "And they said libraries are boring."

But to answer Sholeh, who was being nice enough to guide her. "That's probably Mount Rushmore. Should be, at least."

"Which one are you?" John asked as he breezed in, shrugging off his trenchcoat. "And do you want to keep your job?"

Meet your new boss, Sholeh. Sorry.

"Bloody hell, girl, don't twitch, you're too young for me to bite," John said, shaking his head as he headed for his office. "A fawn... nine hells, this place is mad."

"Just checking... Sho, you said? I need to make sure the schedule is covered, an' don't want anyone here that hates it so badly they're setting fires or nonsense like that."

"Can't fire you for shifts you missed when I wasn't in charge, now can I?" John asked, opening his office and tossing his coat on his chair. "'S long as you show up regularly, pet, it's fine. You want to stay on Wednesdays?"

"Sholeh." Why, was that a somewhat stressed-out Sparkle, making his way into the library with an un-lit cigarette hanging from his mouth and a half-wild look in his eye. "Sholeh! That's you, right? Like, I'm not losing my fucking mind, you're here, you're in one piece, you weren't eaten by like a badger or that weird naked chick or... Where the hell were you?"

Really, she was just lucky that he hadn't grabbed her by the shoulders and started to shake.

Sparkle was not a huggy person. He wasn't. Not by any stretch of the imagination. So when he wrapped his arms around Sholeh and clung for a moment for dear life, that was kind of a big deal.

"Of course I took care of you, girlie. Someone had to."

Look, he was maybe a bit protective of her. Even with all of the turning into a badger and threatening to maul him. She was like a kid sister or something.

"You didn't cause all that much," Sparkle decided, giving her a quick squeeze before easing back. "I mean, I worried. Didn't think I had any reason to worry until the dog turned into that chick in my room."

He wrinkled his nose a little. Whoever that Zhari person was, he still wasn't sorry for punting her out naked into the hall, no.

"Where were you, anyhow?"

And right on cue, there was a prince in the library- with hamburgers and fries from the cafe, today, because as worried as he was, he also wasn't one to mess with tradition.

Still, the takeout bag was tossed rather carelessly on the counter once Ulrik actually spotted Sholeh. Marching determinedly over, he took hold of her by the shoulders assuming such dirty moddery is okay and gave her a once-over from head to toe, as if to make sure that all of her was there.

"I brought lunch," he said, trying to sound flippant as he took a step back.

"You could never be a bother," he told her firmly, dropping the unconcerned air. "I just needed to be sure for myself that you were all right," he smiled. "Hence the lunch, because if you refused food, well. Something would be very wrong were that the case."

"It can be scary," Ulrik agreed, "when you don't understand why something is happening."

Was he talking about Sholeh's metabolism? Or something else entirely?

Of course he was in, he couldn't very well check the wards on the place from home, now could he?
