Library, Wednesday, All Day

Sholeh was thrilled to be back in the library, back to classes, and, best of all, back to human shape again. She was also secretly thrilled not to have been the sister who woke up naked in front of Sparkle and Ulrik (and hadn't yet figured out a way to talk to them and explain anything), though she felt bad that Zhahar had gotten stuck with that instead.

But enough of that. The library had decided to welcome her back by sending out groups of fantasy novels to bother various other parts of the library. Each group had fourteen books at a time in them (which made it hard to get all of them when they scattered) and they kept invading the geology section, the travel section that dealt with famous mountain ranges, and the hobby section--particularly the mountaineering, hiking, and spelunking books.

Sholeh decided it was just better not to even know.

Tradition was important.

Sholeh squeaked as his hands clasped over her shoulders because modding is always okay with them, bb, eyes wide. "I'm right here!" she squeaked, since that was what Sparkle had wanted to know. "And okay!"

And then he was releasing her. "And hungry," she assured him. "Hi, Ulrik. Uhh, I'm sorry? For being such a bother."

"You could never be a bother," he told her firmly, dropping the unconcerned air. "I just needed to be sure for myself that you were all right," he smiled. "Hence the lunch, because if you refused food, well. Something would be very wrong were that the case."

"It would!" Sholeh agreed, hand already fishing for a burger. "Growing up, it took my mothers awhile to realize that I needed to eat a lot of little meals throughout the day or else I'd get faint. It was hard to see with my sisters running around, you know? But it would really scare my sisters a lot, so they eventually figured it out."

"It can be scary," Ulrik agreed, "when you don't understand why something is happening."

Was he talking about Sholeh's metabolism? Or something else entirely?

From the shamefaced expression Sholeh was wearing, it was possible she wasn't thinking of her metabolism anymore.

"Yeah, it really can," she said softly, tilting her head forward to try and hide behind her hair. Between this conversation and Sparkle's she was feeling really, really guilty. They were her friends! They'd taken care of her! Didn't they have a right to know?

"Sometimes talking to a friend can help," Ulrik suggested. Yeah. Definitely not on the metabolish topic.

"If you need to talk about something, Ulrik, I'm always happy to help," Sholeh said, deliberately misunderstanding and feeling terrible and awful and horrible about it. But what was there to do? Admit...everything?

Then they might hate her! Then they might fear her! Then they might get in trouble!

And, well, she'd already stonewalled Sparkle this afternoon. So it would be unfair to tell Ulrik, right?
