Sholeh was thrilled to be back in the library, back to classes, and, best of all, back to human shape again. She was also secretly thrilled not to have been the sister who woke up naked in front of Sparkle and Ulrik (and hadn't yet figured out a way to talk to them and explain anything), though she felt bad that Zhahar had gotten stuck with that instead.

But enough of that. The library had decided to welcome her back by sending out groups of fantasy novels to bother various other parts of the library. Each group had fourteen books at a time in them (which made it hard to get all of them when they scattered) and they kept invading the geology section, the travel section that dealt with famous mountain ranges, and the hobby section--particularly the mountaineering, hiking, and spelunking books.

Sholeh decided it was just better not to even know.

"Hi," Sholeh said, all smiles. Someone to help at the library! Exciting! "We have this Earth's history and many others. They're all in one area, broken down by which reality and then by historical time," she explained, coming out from behind the circulation desk to guide Emily to the history area.

It was totally normal for a library aide to be dressed in Victorian fashions, right?

"Do you have a time period in mind?"

Emily had no time to reply that she had no interest in any other world because hey, she wasn't only young but...very well dressed. A bit too frilly for Emily's taste, but she wore it well. So Emily would just ignore that.

"The last fifteen years of the history of the United States of America. This world only."

"Okay, so all modern stuff," Sholeh said with a nod. "That's useful, because it's all the closest books. Oops, watch out!" She pointed to another group of fourteen fantasy novels trundling towards the same section they were. "The books are really fond of some mountain with faces on it. I've had to shoo them out of this one area like three times already."

"The books. The books are fans of other books." Were Emily a person with something of a nice sense of humor, she would've let a psychotic laugh right there. But she wasn't, so she just made a mental note on the subject. "And they said libraries are boring."

But to answer Sholeh, who was being nice enough to guide her. "That's probably Mount Rushmore. Should be, at least."

Books that were fans of other books that were merrily making their way under their own power to go and visit them.

"Who says that?" Sholeh asked, aghast. "Libraries aren't boring! They're wonderful!"

And that were being merrily ignored by Emily, even if that wasn't the right adjective.

"People that know nothing of libraries, of course. I think they are pretty great."

"Are you going to work here?" Sholeh asked, standing before the modern U.S history section. "I think there might be open shifts available."

Emily stopped for a moment to consider it. "It doesn't sound too bad. I have never worked on a library though." Or anywhere else.

"It's pretty easy," Sholeh assured her. "Mostly, it's keeping the books behaving themselves and sometimes helping people find things."

She gave Emily a big smile. "I'm Sholeh, by the way. Can I help you find anything else?"

"Well then, I guess it wouldn't hurt to try." She wasn't really optimistic about the idea, but hey, it could come in handy.

Oh God why this girl was making it so hard for Emily not to think of the world adorable? Totally ruining her cool here. "Sholeh, that's beautiful. I'm Emily and don't worry, you have already helped me a lot." She went and grabbed a couple of books, giving them a quick look before deciding they would do.

"So some books are sentient? Sorry, I'm just curious about it."

Probably because she was so damn earnest?

"Not sentient, exactly?" Sholeh said, bending down to scoop up the group they'd passed on the way. They'd caught up to the girls and their pages were rustling in a way that was almost rhythmic. "They just...do stuff, sometimes. Act up. Or act out, really. They're just...I'm not really sure, actually."
