The Library (2/10/06)

Janet unlocked the door to the library, turned on the lights, and sat down behind the Collections Desk. She warily eyed the rather strange-looking romance novel with the centaur and the mermaid on the cover. It was just lying there on the corner of the desk.

"Hey, Angela," said Janet finally remembering to check back in this thread. "You seem awfully cheerful for this hour of the morning."

"Do I?" Angela said innocently, hopping up to sit on the counter. "I'm getting a visitor tonight, so I guess I'm happy about that. I mean, it's weirdm but I'm really .... happy. Yeah."

"That's good," said Janet. "So who's stopping by? Family? I think any visitors from home would be weird here at FH."

Angela shook her head, drumming her heels happily against the counter. "My ex. Which, I know, sounds like a weird thing to be happy about, but we really reconnected last time I was home. He used to be in a band with Tino -- he works at Caritas? -- and I guess he has an amp or something to drop off. He said he'd have dinner with me if he had time."

"That does sound a little weird," said Janet. "But weird in a good way. Tino." She paused to try and remember who he was. "The guy that doesn't give out the umbrellas unless you ask for them?" Unlike Parker's friend Jarod, who wasn't stingy with the little drink umbrellas. "So you guys are still friends, then? Or do you think it might be something a little more than that?"

Often Occasionally, Janet feels the need to indulge in gossip about her friends' love lives. It makes high school more fun.

"Yeah, Tino's the quiet guy Lorne's always yelling at. I'm not sure about the umbrellas -- for some reason like because the joke about the character on MSCL was that he was always offscreen he never served me."

"And ... definitely more than friends. Um," Angela said, feeling her cheeks and lips go warm. "We were never good at the whole platonic thing."

"Poor Tino," said Janet. "I hope the pay is worth it. Hee! How funny!"

Janet grinned. "Apparently not. So, what are you hoping is going to happen at dinner?"

"I don't know," Angela said, going redder. "I mean, nothing can happen. I have to at least finish out the school year here, and he has stuff to do back home -- I mean, I don't think he would want to stay in Fandom. Like, even if he wanted to, I don't think he could."

"So ... I guess I just want to see him." She tried to look honest as she said this. Even though, mentally, she's wondering what the pay at Empire Records is like and debating whether there would be any chance he would want to actually come back to high school. You know. Just in case.

"Hi. Do I have a library card?" Sam walked up to the counter and put her bag on the floor. "I need to check out a fiction book about the Berlin Wall and the Iron Curtain to read before Quantum Physics on Monday, but I can't remember whether the library's going to eat me if I try to do that."

"Hi," said Janet, blinking. "You know, I don't remember. You were in here all the time last semester, but I don't know if you actually checked out any books."

"I'm such a loser," Sam said, "I don't remember, which means I should probably just get another one."

"Well, if neither of us remembers, then we'll guess that you don't have one," said Janet. She handed Sam an application form. "Thank God I already know you're not a Chosen One or anything silly like that."

"I could be a Chosen One," Sam snickered, pulling blue pen from the cup on the desk and beginning to fill out the form. "So...how do you feel about making Marty feel like his plan worked?"

"No, you absolutely could not be," said Janet firmly. "Because we don't do Chosen Ones at the SGC in Colorado Springs." Janet grinned. "Why, Sam. You're sounding positively mischievous. And how am I supposed to turn down mischief on a Friday morning?"

"You can't." Sam grinned. "I just so happen to have U.S. Government with Mister Blank this afternoon. Want me to set the ball rolling?"

"I really can't," she said, snickering. "Damn it. You know me too well. Yes, get started with that this afternoon in Government. Poor Marty. I almost feel sorry for him."

Elizabeth smiled tiredly. "No, not really," she said. "I'm thinking caffeine IVs are needed. How's you anyway?"

"Caffeine IVs are always needed," said Janet. "Especially here. I'm doing well. This weekend is shaping up to be pretty quiet."

"I'll be spending about half my weekend in detention," said Janet. "So it had better be quiet. My ribs are healing up. They only twinge every so often now instead of all the time."
