"I have no idea," said Janet. "That's why you're the one taking the class. But at least reading fiction for class gives you a break for a weekend, right?"

OOC: Not a problem!

"Yes, that's true." Sam decided not to bring up that math could be both fun and relaxing. She'd just get made fun of. "Except there's that essay for ACJ and whatever I'm going to get assigned in Government. Still, beats the heck out of hunting vampires for relaxation potential."

"I'm going to end up doing the ACJ essay at the last minute, I just know it," said Janet. Damn, no chance today to make fun of Sam for being a science nerd. Not that she could talk. "Hunting vampires is relaxing?" she asked.

Sam shrugged and tapped the pen on the counter. "Well, not the way we do it, anyway. Which was my point."

"It was--" Janet frowned, feeling suddenly awkward. "A very tense week.

The light got sucked out of the conversation so fast Sam actually did a quick check behind her for a black hole. "Yep." She rocked back and forth on her feet. "Tense."

"Would you look at that?" asked Janet, with a wry smile. "I feel tense right now. You?"

OOC: Which reminds me-- Um, were you going to respond to that conversation set in Sam's room? Or did your comment get eaten again? Because LJ is that evil.

"Ooh, yeah."

OOC: Darn it. *goes to check*

"Great," said Janet. "You know, I'm generally an advocate of discussing things that are a problem." Possibly even while sober.

"Generally, huh?" Sam looked down at the counter. "I'm not sure we're ever going to see eye to eye on this one, Janet. But that's why you're the doctor and I'm not. I mean, other than me getting grossed out by anything resembling blood and body parts."

"For what it's worth, though, I am sorry I brought up Cassie. That wasn't fair. I know how much you miss her."

"Not always," said Janet dryly. "If you hadn't noticed." It was amazing how fascinating the spines of the stack of books to be reshelved were. "I don't know if we ever will. But the two of us getting mad over it isn't the best solution either."

"I said some things that aren't fair too," said Janet. "And it's not as if we don't all miss our families."

"No, but I can't tell you I'm not going to get upset about this again." Sam nodded, "It hurts so much sometimes. I'm sorry if I cling too tight, but it's not like I've got that much left in the way of family, you know? You, Daniel, Jack, Charlie, Liz...you're it."

"I know you will," said Janet, resting her elbows on the desk and propping her chin in her cupped palms. "And I'll probably get defensive about it again." She looked up at Sam. "It only hurts when I start thinking about it, but you know that. You don't cling too tight. It's just-- I don't know. We both freaked out, and I should have told you what happened right away. This week has been hell without having you to talk to. Also, I landed myself in detention tomorrow."

"Detention? I didn't even know we had cheerleaders here."

"No, and thank goodness for that," said Janet. "Because you know how I get around them. No, I might have brought Professor Skeeter's children up in class and mentioned the stress of divorce having an effect on them. She decided that was worth a detention." The gleam in Janet's eyes might have suggested she was plotting revenge.

"And I notice you're avoiding the subject of everything else we're talking about."

"Janet! I'm shocked!" She looked down at her hands, twisting them together. "Yeah, I guess I am. I don't like where we are now, but it's better than we were. I don't like having to drink heavily to talk to you." She chuckled, bitterly, "my head can't take it."

"I knew I had you fooled with my innocent facade," murmured Janet. "Think of how bad this would be if we were doing it at forty. And in all non-drunken seriousness, I hate this. So what do we do about it? Because really, you're not the only one who's avoiding a bunch of subjects."

"Janet," Sam whispered, "we are doing this at forty. And I don't know. If we were married, I'd suggest couples counseling."

"When we're physically forty, anyway." She was whispering too. "Ignoring it isn't the way to go. Look at what happens when we ignore things." Janet grinned wryly. "Couples counseling? Is Jack going to be jealous. But counseling might not be a bad idea. Dr. Pevensie seems nice enough. Also, she's not Mackenzie. This is a critical skill for any counselor."

Sam rolled her eyes. "Trust me, Jack O'Neill is not going to be jealous about not having to go to counseling with me ~~much as we may need it.~~"

"Sooo...do you want to go? Seriously?"

Janet laughed. "I know. Jack's the worst of any of us about counselors. ~~Problems?~~"

"What else are we going to do?" asked Janet. "Avoid everything by changing the subject whenever we start getting somewhere? Which we both do. So let's do this."

"Tell me about it. He's Jack O'Neill."

Sam nodded and looked up at janet. "Okay. So we'll do this. Because this can't continue or I'll lose my mind."

"I don't think you need to," said Janet. "I've heard the rants. ~~What'd he do now?~~"

"No one's losing their mind," said Janet firmly. "Given average life expectancies, we have at least sixty more years of friendship. At least. And neither of us is going to lose our minds during that time."

~~"He was Jack O'Neill. In all his glory."~~

"We've already lost them a few times," Sam said, "and given our average life expectancies? It'll happen again."

~~"Ah. That. Did you zat him?"~~

"What's a little insanity between friends?" asked Janet. "Our average life expectancies are a little more complicated than most people's, aren't they? I had a formula all worked out somewhere. I have to go to the clinic anyway. I can make an appointment then."
