Fandom High Graduation Ceremony, Class of 2012, Early Saturday Evening (Part 2)

Were you all enjoying your graduation, children? Ingvar certainly hoped you were. It was so much fun, after all! Though... it could be a little more fun, couldn't it? It felt as if something was missing somehow. Something to really make it... fun.

Ingvar knew what it was.

And so, while the graduates were still on and around the stage, the earth began to rumble. Large black clouds of smoke pushed out of Ingvar's volcano and into the air, obscuring the sky and the moon. Soon, the air was covered in a thick black blanket of darkness.

The tune of the rumbling shifted.

Around the stage, clear protective walls sprung up. This was not Fandom's first tango on graduation day, thank you. She knew how to take care of what was hers.

Unfortunately, Ingvar knew its mother well. Moments later, it began to rain: a thick downpour of familiar plastic poppets in varying levels of creepiness, but also nice, brown, fluffy ...red-eyed, sharp-clawed teddy bears. And leading the charge, teeth-first--

"DROP BEARS!"

"Well," Luke said. "That was an interesting ceremony."

No, he didn't realize the invasion wasn't a planned part of the events.

"I have never," Peter said, raising his voice, "seen a ceremony like that before."

Yeah, he'd noticed Luke eyeing them during the diploma ceremony.

Luke quirked his lips up. "That's not typical for a graduation, then?"

"It's certainly nothing like my high school graduation," Peter said.

Behind him, Petra glanced from Luke to Peter and back.

Luke gave her a polite nod. "I'm Luke Skywalker," he said. "Ben's father."

"Peter Wiggin," Peter volunteered. "Hegemon of the Free People of Earth, and coincidentally, Ender's brother. This is one of my generals, Petra Delphiki. She served under him."

"It's very nice to meet you both," Luke said, giving the bodyguards a nod as well in a "and I see you and recognize you exist" sort of way. "Ender's parents couldn't make it?"

He frowned. "Or perhaps I'd met another set of them."

"My parents have a... difficult relationship with my brother," Peter said vaguely. "But my sister and I are here."

"As are we," Petra said fiercely. "His friends."

Luke smiled. "He's fortunate to have both," he said. "Did you have an easy time getting here?"

"Our universe's portals aren't as ubiquitous or... stable... as those of other universes," Peter said. "It took some space travelling and a little wrangling, but on the whole, it wasn't as bumpy a ride as it could have been."

"Good to hear," Luke said. "Ender's explained a little bit about how physics work in your universe--" where it didn't take two weeks to cross a galaxy, weird, "--so I hope it didn't take months for you to get here."

"Our portal is close to Earth, and to a large space station," Petra interjected. "We were fine."

She was still eyeing Luke as if she was trying to figure out his deal.

Wigginses...definitely had a habit of noticing when other people were noticing them, as Valentine had taken the same notes during the ceremony that Peter had. Of course, she was a little more subtle than Peter, and so when she noticed Peter noticing the man who had noticed them (who, she noticed, looked familiar and had a lightsaber), she wondered if they would notice her noticing their conversation.

Man, she missed eavesdropping on things her brothers did way more than she'd like to admit.

Luke turned his head and gave her a slight smile.

Eavesdropping on a Jedi was tough.

Valentine had the decency to blush a little, ducking her head. Mostly to hide her own smile. She brushed her hair behind her ears when she looked back up. "I guess I'm not as subtle as I thought I was."

"Oh, you did well," Luke said, "but I'm used to people being interested in what I'm saying."

Valentine only half-managed to hide her grin, though she did that half on purpose. "I was actually more interested in what the other guy had to say," she admitted.

"Polite chit-chat," Luke said. "Politicians are fluent in it."

"I'm not nearly as good at it," Valentine said, shrugging her shoulders, "while the Hegemon certainly has that ability in spades. If he wasn't so enamored with ruling over Earth, he could have had a great career in acting."

Luke's gaze sharpened. "Does he run it justly? Or just run it?"

"From what I hear," Valentine said, tilting her head slightly at the sharpened gaze, "he does an okay job. Better than I would have expected."

Although, really, she wasn't terribly surprised, not with his acting skills.

Luke nodded. "Good," he said affably. "I've had experience when it goes the other way."

"There's still no guarantee that it won't shift gears," Valentine pointed out. "I overheard that you're Ben's father, right? He's a good kid."

Luke beamed at her. "Thank you. And you were cheering for Ender, right? He spent some time with us over the summer. He's a very astute young man."
