Today a large poster was displayed at the front of the classroom. "I would just like to start by saying I had nothing to do with the creation of this poster," Steve said, looking faintly embarrassed about it. "But it has an important message. You can't always tell by looking at someone whether they have a venereal disease or not. They may not even know it. That's why protection is so important, and why abstinence is the only really effective way of preventing the spread of disease. Today we're going to have a little exercise to demonstrate this.

"You have the rest of the class period free to mingle and eat these cookies I brought. Half of you will receive a packet of chocolate chip cookies, and half of you will receive a packet of bacon maple cookies. If you want to trade, or try one of the other cookies, well, then you'll have to talk to each other, won't you? There is only one requirement: you must shake hands with anyone you talk to. And there is a catch. One of you is--hypothetically, of course--carrying a disease, which is transferred by the shaking of hands. I will tell you who at the end of the period. But don't worry about that for now. Chat. Enjoy the cookies."

"I don't really want any cookies," Stacey said, in case anyone wanted them.

She totally wanted them. She just couldn't eat them.

"You could just look at them and admire them?" Matt offered.

You did not understand the temptation here, Matt.

"I'm not really a cookie person," she said. "Admiring doesn't do me much good."

"Well then you could just give it all away," Matt suggested. "Which might be fitting considering the topic of the class."

It was what Stacey did best!

Besides having diabetes.

"I could," she agreed. "And if I give it away sooner, there's less chance of coming into contact with more people, right?"

Not how it worked in real life.

"Exactly," Matt said holding out his hand for handshake. "Here. I'll take away the temptation."

"Done," she said, shaking his hand and then going to put the cookies in it. "Enjoy my cookies."

"For some reason that just sounds wrong," Matt chuckled. "How've you been?"

"I'm good," she said with a smile. "I haven't thought I was a supermodel in a whole week now!"

Though that had sort of been great, looking back on it.

"Well you could probably pass for one," Matt said with a grin. "Of course I'm mostly guessing but I think I know an attractive girl when I meet one."

She was not going to tell him he was wrong, no. "You're sweet," she said. "Which is good, since we still haven't cashed in on that bet reward yet."

"Oh, that's right," Matt said leaning back on his desk. "I'm supposed to be getting a fabulous steak dinner. Probably with a nice baked potato."

"Yeah, yeah, something like that," she said, mock-dryly.

"Or at least what passes for that at Outback Steakhouse," Matt amended humorously. "Do Australians even have steakhouses?"

"I'll have to ask one," she decided.

Because calling up your mostly ex-friend's Australian ex or whatever to ask that wasn't weird.

"You're on good terms with the Australians?"

"Not the whole continent or anything," Stacey said. "I used to babysit for an Australian family."

"You'll have to tell me what they say," Matt replied with a smirk. "So when would you like to settle our bet?"

"Are you free Friday?" she asked. Friday was a good, traditional date night.

"Friday works," Matt replied happily. "It's a date."

Because apparently that needed verbal confirmation.
