Announcement and Refugee Hosting in The Gym, Friday Evening

The P.A. crackles to life.

"We shall be opening our doors to the poor, powerless townsfolk. They are to gather in the gym. Volunteers to help organize blankets, bedding, food, and etcetera would be very welcome."

Smith then walks down to the gym, props open the doors, and walks away. This was going to be a mess, and he felt ignoring it would be the best method to deal with it, rather than letting his head explode. Again.

[ooc: Huzzah! Townies can come to this post for their safety and warmth! Screening is disabled! Students and Teachers are welcome to organize something... but as it's an emergency, we hath not actually organized the refugee effort! Organize! Be Swift! But above all, interact and have fun!]

Archie approached Maia, smiling in approval at the note on the wall. "Commendable incentive in taking charge of this, Miss, er . . . I'm terribly sorry, I don't mean to be rude, but I don't know your name." He paused, somewhat ashamed of not knowing her name, though he knew he recognized her. "As for bedding, I'm perfectly willing to give up my bed in room 115 for anyone who might need it. I'm afraid I can't speak for my roommate, though."

Maia glanced at Archie, she knew him but not well, mostly through Lana. She smiled up at him "Its fine, My name is Maia and thank you for the compliment I just thought it would be better then sleeping on the gym floor. That is very nice of you to give up your bed, thank you." Maia wrote his name down, "Who is your roommate, they may have put their name down already...Have you a place to stay if you give up your bed?" Maia's voice was concerned, it was touching so many students were willing to help but she didn't want them to feel they needed to give up their own beds unless they totally wanted to.

"And you're right about that, Maia," he agreed with a smile. "Harry Potter is my roommate, though I scarcely see him."

His expression turned slightly bitter when she asked where he would sleep. "I've a hammock I can string up somewhere, if possible. If not, I can find a quiet corner of one of the common rooms. I'll be fine, honestly, and one of these folks would be glad of the bed. Believe me, once you've spent a month locked in a cramped hole in the ground so small that standing is impossible, almost any sleeping arrangement is luxury."

Maia looked concerned "Oh how awful." She said at his description of the hole "Is that like solitary confinment?" She had seen a movie once where they had done that to a prisoner. "Well if you want you can string up the hammock in my room if you need to, I've a kitchen area and a bathroom so there is enough space. I'd hate for you to give up your bed and then end up in a hammock in a common room." She was very touched he was so giving but really thought it awful to give up a bed to sleep in the common room.

Archie nodded. "That's exactly what it was, yes." He gave her a smile again. "Maia, I'm still getting used to having a bed and sharing a room with only one other person rather than five or six crammed into a tiny berth, and sleeping in longer than four-hour shifts. One night in the common room will still seem like an indulgence, in comparison. The offer was very kind, though. Perhaps some other student giving up their bed would be glad of it."

Maia nodded, Archie was so nice. "I am sure they will, I think Pip said something about it so that his room will totally open for a family to use it. Everyone is just being so great about this." She smiled "Were you a captain of a ship?" Maia said intrigued by his use of sailing words.

"A captain?" He chuckled. "No, no, I never made it as far as all that. Just a humble junior lieutenant."

Maia smiled, she loved boats "In the navy?" she said happily.

"Yes, that's right," he replied cheerfully. "Er -- the British Royal Navy, that is."

He tugged a little bit at the hem of his uniform jacket. "As you can see, I'm still so used to the uniform I wear it all the time. The hat, though --" He leaned in, winking confidentially. "I'm trying to get into the habit of saving that for special occasions."

Maia looked at his uniform, it didn't look like a modern day naval uniform to her, tilting her head she said "When were you in the navy?" She was curious even more now. "Hats are wonderful for special occasions indeed, perhaps for Valentines day." She said with a smile.

Archie paused for a moment; he had been trying to sort out his own timeline in his head for quite some time now, and could never quite make complete sense of it. So he opted for a slightly roundabout answer.

"Well, Maia, let me put it this way: in the beginning of 1792 I had just made midshipman." He grinned roguishly. "As for the hat, well, it's part of the uniform, but I've no such strict dress restrictions on me here, and to be frank taking care of the damned thing is a hassle."

Maia laughed, he was old like her, it was nice to have people around like that. "Oh well yeah your older then me then. Not many students around here are. Thats nice though. I know the kind of hats your talking about I've seen them in paintings, with the feathers and such. I'd love to see it sometime though. How did you get here?"

"Oh, no feathers in my hat. They'd be terribly impractical in a gale storm!" He laughed again and shook his head. "To tell you the truth, I don't remember, and it bothers me. In fact, I'm not entirely sure I want to know. I remember leaving my ship, and getting into a boat that was supposed to take me to the ship that would bring me here, and after that . . . well, it's all a blur until the time I arrived here in Fandom."

"Oh." Maia said slightly disappointed he didn't remember more. "Yes that would be impractical in a storm, I guess its just for portraits. Did you ever have a portrait done of yourself in your uniform?" Maia looked at the uniform again, it was very nice to look at. "Sometimes not knowing is for the best." Maia added quietly.

The look on Archie's face might have indicated that he agreed it might be best not to know. "A portrait? No, I never had a chance. Though that's a subject I can perhaps talk to one of the art students about, hmm? I suppose one of these 'photograph' things might suffice, but they disturb me a bit," he admitted.

Maia smiled "I think the digital ones that you see right there and decide if you want it or not are a bit much. They make my skin crawl a little. I like cameras the way they used to be, though my friend has some pictures that actually move."

Re: SIGN UP FOR EXTRA BEDS

[identity profile] actingltcrumpet.livejournal.com 2006-01-28 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
"Pictures that move?" Archie looked confused. "Is that different from television and films?"

Re: SIGN UP FOR EXTRA BEDS

[identity profile] maias-notebook.livejournal.com 2006-01-28 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
Maia nodded quickly "Yeah is different, its just a regular picture but the people inside it move around and sometimes walk out of the picture all together leaving it blank. I've seen them, she has them on her fridge." Maia's voice got quiet "Its magic."

"Magic." Archie sighed, but he was smiling as well. "I'm never going to stop being surprised here, am I? I should let you get back to your work, though, and see what else I can do to help."

Maia nodded happily "Blair set me up doing this, perhaps you can set up a place to distribute the beds assignements and mattresses we're collecting." Maia grinned "Just jump in anywhere every little bit helps. It was really nice to meet you Archie."

[identity profile] actingltcrumpet.livejournal.com 2006-01-28 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
"I'll do that," he agreed, offering his hand to her. "Maia, it was a pleasure to meet you as well, and thank you for doing this. It's wonderful to see people helping."

Re: SIGN UP FOR EXTRA BEDS

Maia took his hand "It is indeed, really wonderful to see everyone pull together. Have a wonderful night."

Archie shook her hand warmly and smiled before he started walking away. "The same to you, Maia. Best of luck with your efforts here."
