The Library (12/06/05)

Janet unlocks the library, flips on the lights, and goes behind the Collections Desk. ~~She checks in Methos' office to see if his delivery from yesteray has been opened yet. Or if it's still there.~~ Then she starts looking up useful books for her Indo-European and Classics presentation and working on her independent study in math.

Jenny came into the library to look for some books on psychology to recommend to her students. She was slightly distracted and in a rush, so she made her way back to the stacks quickly, without looking to see who was around.

Something caught Angel's attention out of the corner of his eye. He frowned. He couldn't place his finger on it, but some gut instinct was saying to follow whatever had just flitted through his peripheral vision.

He walked slowly towards the stacks, scanning for any signs of whatever it was.

Jenny walked slowly through the aisles and scanned the shelves. Maybe she'd recommend some anthropology or sociology for students that wanted additional information on the social sciences? She bypassed the psychology section and moved on to math. Maybe there would be a basic book on statistics there to recommend.

She certainly never looked away from the books.

Angel spotted it - and surely it had to be an it - from the other side of the shelves. He followed along, his eyes watching carefully over the tops of the books.

Jenny slowed and came to a halt as she reached the mathematics section. There was the book she was looking for: How To Lie With Statistics. Good to know they had it before she recommended it as additonal reading.

Maybe there was another good introductory guide to statistics out now? It had been a while since she'd seen a math book, not that she'd missed it much.

Nothing was touched. Of course not. Deciding enough was enough, Angel walked around the shelves to confront the vision.

"Okay so, what? I'm going to have to deal with this crap every year? Like my own personal Dickens story only without the good acting? Leave me alone."

The last time she'd heard that voice hadn't been good. So Jenny did what any modern, tough chick, Rom technopagan would do when confronted by a very angry vampire who'd shown up suddenly in a quiet library.

She jumped about a foot in the air and shrieked--not too loudly--in surprise.

Jenny stared for a minute until she found her voice. "Angel? Um, hi."

"Kind of you guys to make with the common courtesy," Angel replied. Her shriek had unsettled him, but his own fear was too strong to be swayed. "What is it this year? Pretending to be my friend before you try to convince me to kill myself?"

"You guys?" asked Jenny. "Convince you to kill yourself?" Okay, the elders hadn't told her Angel had gone nutty, but it pretty much looked like Angel had gone nutty. "You, uh, feeling okay there?"

"Fine and dandy," Angel replied. "So why don't you go tell the First or whatever it is you're going by this time to piss off and leave me alone? I'm tired of it."

Jenny wrinkled her nose and looked Angel over. "Whatever it is I'm going by this time?" she asked disbelievingly. "How about 'Jenny Calendar?' Work for you?"

"Sure, and then in a minute you'll be Kitty Pryde," Angel said. "Then my sister. Then some random guy I killed in the street back in 1842. I've seen the magic act, I'm bored."

Jenny let herself glance to the left, then to the right. Okay, no crazy-making rays in the library that she could see. "Who's Kitty Pryde? Didn't know you had a sister. Also, not really up on random guys from 1842." Jenny shrugged. "And no, you haven't seen the magic act, because I've never done a magic act."

She'd gone from afraid to confused, and now she was getting kind of irritated. What the hell was going on?

"Oh yeah? How about this one then?" Angel reached out to touch Jenny's arm - a touch that wouldn't connect if she was the First.

Jenny hadn't been expecting Angel to reach for her, and that definitely freaked her out. She gasped and jumped back, but her arm brushed against Angel's hand anyway.

"Hey!" snapped Jenny. "A little warning before you make with the touching, thanks."

Angel frowned. "Wait - that shouldn't have worked. If you're not the First, who are you?"

Jenny rubbed at the spot on her arm where she'd been touched. "Didn't we already go over this one?" she asked.

"But... I killed you."

"Yeah!" exclaimed Jenny. "You did. And thanks for that, by the way." She gave him an irritated look. "Did you notice how dead isn't really always dead these days?"

"Well... yeah but how was I supposed to know?" Angel demaned. "Last year somebody who looked just like you was trying to get me to kill Buffy and then kiss the dawn. 'scuse me for being a little skittish."

"Well, hey, how was I supposed to know that?" asked Jenny. "I mean, hello, I was a little busy being dead at the time?"

She paused. "Wait, a sec. How the heck did somebody looking just like me show up? Shapechange spell?"

"The First Evil," Angel said. "It can appear as anyone who's died. Last Christmas I got it in the Angel: This Is Your Bastard Unlife version."

"Ew," said Jenny. "I dislike the idea of being imitated by anyone, much less something icky like the First Evil, whatever that is. Time to add that to the mental list of 'things to research.'" She tilted her head and looked Angel over again, more consideringly this time. "You okay? Buffy okay?" She stopped herself before she could ask about Rupert.

Angel was taken aback by the question, but answered anyway. "Buffy's okay as far as I know."

Whether or not Jenny noticed a glaring omission in that answer was up to her.

"I didn't just ask about Buffy, Angel," said Jenny. "So. You okay?"
