The Library (12/06/05)

[janet_fraiser]

Janet unlocks the library, flips on the lights, and goes behind the Collections Desk. She checks in Methos' office to see if his delivery from yesteray has been opened yet. Or if it's still there. Then she starts looking up useful books for her Indo-European and Classics presentation and working on her independent study in math.

"I'm teaching psychology," said Jenny. "They had an opening, and not being dead? I needed a job. And please. The Powers?" Jenny wrinkled her nose. "You've got to be kidding me."

"The last not-dead Sunnydale alum I met was working for them," Angel said, then corrected himself. "Is working for them. Supposedly."

"The Powers and my people don't work well together," said Jenny. "Trust me on that one. So who's the last not-dead Sunnydale alum you met? There's Lorne--nice guy, very flamboyant, Buffy, Xander." She searched her memory. She'd met someone else from Sunnydale, hadn't she? "Wait, Tara Maclay? Says she's working for the Powers?" Jenny shook her head. "Not after some of the stuff I've heard coming out of that so-called Ethics class."

"That'd be the one," Angel said. "And that'd be my doubts too. She was the one who souled me, but then apologized to me after for doing it. Call me crazy but that doesn't smell like goodness to me."

"She apologized to you for it?" Jenny dropped her chin and stared at Angel disbelievingly. "Talk about missing the point of a curse. And, yeah, got a list of who's naughty going. And yay, more notes ." Jenny frowned. "Oh, and Angel? That curse ever gets broken? I'm not going to apologize for anything."

"Good. Don't. Because if it gets broken you know I'd only come after you again," Angel said. His tone was that of someone acknowledging a truth, not making a threat.

"I know." Jenny shrugged. "I thought I should get the whole warning thing out of the way during our touching reunion scene." The serious look in her eyes belied her light tone.

"Glad we could be efficient," Angel said, matching her tone for tone. "Naughty list? Something tells me you're not bucking to take over Santa's job."

"It occurred to me that a lot of the bad guy types at this school? Are a little young, and therefore, obvious." Jenny grinned. "So I started listing them. Your ex-buddy Belthazor, that manipulative kid in my psych class--Jonathan--his girlfriend Medusa, and now Tara Maclay. Maybe her girlfriend too. I'm thinking there are more I haven't gotten to yet."

"Other than Tara and Duce you just listed nearly everybody Angelus pegged as being useful for minion status," Angel said. "Though Faith's not so bad. She's had a rough time of it but she could be good if someone encouraged her. Only problem is the white hats haven't stepped up to the plate yet."

"Duce?" Jenny snickered. "That's kind of a silly nickname. Faith? Wait, Faith Lehane? Dark-haired girl, a little wild? She's in my class. Didn't know she tended toward being a dark sider." She frowned. "Also didn't know the white hats weren't--what, organized? This is not sounding like a good situation."

"Faith's a Slayer," Angel said. "She got called after Kendra died. Went rogue, toyed with coming back, now who knows? And tell me about it. We're trying to fix that, though. If I know anything about dealing with evil, it's that you need a Scooby gang all the talent you can get your hands on."

"Wow," said Jenny. "I'm going to have to make an effort to get to know her better." She tilted her head and looked Angel over. "I'm thinking you and whoever 'we' are have an idea?"

"Right now, just that there needs to be a we at all," Angel said. "Martin Blank and I are trying to get together a mix of talent here. Little magic, little muscle, little brainpower. The works."

"I'm thinking I can bring the magic," said Jenny. "Possibly even some brainpower, if it's not too early and I've got my coffee. Besides, try keeping me out." She doesn't think she's met Martin Blank yet. She ought to rectify that.

"As half the challenge is making sure I stay souled," Angel said, "I'm thinking you'd better be on the team."

"Thanks." Jenny smiled. "Apparently I've got some serious work to do."

"Couldn't stop me if you tried. You got a when and a where?"

"Think we're aiming for something later this week. Could keep you in the loop if you wanted."

"I'd appreciate that," said Jenny. "I don't have much of a schedule besides grading papers these days anyway."
