The Library (12/06/05)

[janet_fraiser]

Janet unlocks the library, flips on the lights, and goes behind the Collections Desk. She checks in Methos' office to see if his delivery from yesteray has been opened yet. Or if it's still there. Then she starts looking up useful books for her Indo-European and Classics presentation and working on her independent study in math.

"But... I killed you."

"Yeah!" exclaimed Jenny. "You did. And thanks for that, by the way." She gave him an irritated look. "Did you notice how dead isn't really always dead these days?"

"Well... yeah but how was I supposed to know?" Angel demaned. "Last year somebody who looked just like you was trying to get me to kill Buffy and then kiss the dawn. 'scuse me for being a little skittish."

"Well, hey, how was I supposed to know that?" asked Jenny. "I mean, hello, I was a little busy being dead at the time?"

She paused. "Wait, a sec. How the heck did somebody looking just like me show up? Shapechange spell?"

"The First Evil," Angel said. "It can appear as anyone who's died. Last Christmas I got it in the Angel: This Is Your Bastard Unlife version."

[romanywitch]

"Ew," said Jenny. "I dislike the idea of being imitated by anyone, much less something icky like the First Evil, whatever that is. Time to add that to the mental list of 'things to research.'" She tilted her head and looked Angel over again, more consideringly this time. "You okay? Buffy okay?" She stopped herself before she could ask about Rupert.

Angel was taken aback by the question, but answered anyway. "Buffy's okay as far as I know."

Whether or not Jenny noticed a glaring omission in that answer was up to her.

"I didn't just ask about Buffy, Angel," said Jenny. "So. You okay?"

Angel gave a non-committal shrug. "Got souled recently."

"Heard about that," said Jenny, not pushing. "Gotta say, the souled look works for you. You win any fashion awards for it yet?"

"No," Angel said. "Probably not likely to. Angelus did a fashion show not long before he got zapped. My guess is people won't have good associations."

"Angelus. Did a fashion show?" Jenny gave a quick shake of her head. "Does not sound like the kind of thing he's into. What, was it an evil fashion show?"

"Yes."

Jenny blinked a couple of times. "Not much with the explaining, are you?" she asked. "Everything okay from that? I mean, I'm not going to have to worry about kids showing up to my class and being attacked by evil clothing, am I?"

"No, it was just leather," Angel said. "Fundraiser for a trip to Vegas, which I ended up not going on. Again: soul."

"And again we get to the part where I think we're all better off with the soul here," said Jenny. "So. Enjoying high school? Making friends?"

"I guess?" Angel shrugged. "You? What are you doing here anyway? Please don't tell me working for the Powers."

"I'm teaching psychology," said Jenny. "They had an opening, and not being dead? I needed a job. And please. The Powers?" Jenny wrinkled her nose. "You've got to be kidding me."

"The last not-dead Sunnydale alum I met was working for them," Angel said, then corrected himself. "Is working for them. Supposedly."

"The Powers and my people don't work well together," said Jenny. "Trust me on that one. So who's the last not-dead Sunnydale alum you met? There's Lorne--nice guy, very flamboyant, Buffy, Xander." She searched her memory. She'd met someone else from Sunnydale, hadn't she? "Wait, Tara Maclay? Says she's working for the Powers?" Jenny shook her head. "Not after some of the stuff I've heard coming out of that so-called Ethics class."

"That'd be the one," Angel said. "And that'd be my doubts too. She was the one who souled me, but then apologized to me after for doing it. Call me crazy but that doesn't smell like goodness to me."

[romanywitch]

"She apologized to you for it?" Jenny dropped her chin and stared at Angel disbelievingly. "Talk about missing the point of a curse. And, yeah, got a list of who's naughty going. And yay, more notes ." Jenny frowned. "Oh, and Angel? That curse ever gets broken? I'm not going to apologize for anything."

"Good. Don't. Because if it gets broken you know I'd only come after you again," Angel said. His tone was that of someone acknowledging a truth, not making a threat.

[romanywitch]

"I know." Jenny shrugged. "I thought I should get the whole warning thing out of the way during our touching reunion scene." The serious look in her eyes belied her light tone.

"Glad we could be efficient," Angel said, matching her tone for tone. "Naughty list? Something tells me you're not bucking to take over Santa's job."
