Elizabeth smiles. "I do admit to prefering a lot of the later literature," she says. "To Kill a Mockingbird... most of the Russian greats. I'll certainly be taking it, providing it doesn't clash with, well, speech I think will likely be the only class that would take priority."

Grinning, he says, "I'm pretty good friends with the speech professor. I'll make sure our classes don't meet at the same time."

Elizabeth grins back. "I'd heard something to that effect," she says. "That would be great though. CJ takes presedence over just about everything."

Geoff laughs. "She does indeed. I don't know when the schedule for next term will be posted, but as soon as it is I'll be sure to bring it to the attention of the class."

Elizabeth joins in with the laughter. "Thank you, Professor. It's very much appreciated. It's nice to be able to sit down with a book, and have it actually be your work!"

"Well, I'm glad to find someone who has an appreciation for words. It seems like the majority of students here, unfortunately, don't think literature has any application in their lives."

"My mother was an English teacher," Elizabeth explains. "I learnt to read at a very early age, and I've been reading ever since."

"Really? My father was a wine merchant, so I was able to get a good education. It disappoints me a little that people don't comprehend how much power words can have."

Elizabeth nods. "Yeah. And my father was a lawyer, and then later a politician... words have always been the most powerful tool in my family. In several languages actually," she laughs.

"What languages do you speak, then?" Geoff leans an arm on the desk, obviously interested in the conversation. "I've wanted to include some works on the reading list in their original languages, rather than translations. But I'm not sure that the students will all be able to read them."

Elizabeth blushes slightly. "Russian, French, German, Spanish and Latin," she says. "I always try to read what I can in their original languages."

He looks impressed. "Then I'll be sure some of next term's reading material is available in the original and well as translated versions. I'll even give extra credit for reading the originals," he adds, grinning.

She smiles at him. "Thank you," she says. "The extra credit's not really necessary, but it's appreciated."

"It's only fair. The option will be available to all of the students, and if some of them aren't as fluent, it'll be a good way to encourage them."

"Maybe you could speak to Professor Dream, to see which students, if any, cross-over with what language classes he's teaching next semester?" she suggests. "I've always found reading fiction to be helpful when learning another language."

"That's a great idea, Elizabeth! I'll give him a call, or stop into his office hours. Thank you." He grins broadly at her.

Elizabeth grins back, and half shrugs. "You're welcome," she says. "I occassionally come up with half-decent ideas."

Holding up the coffee cup, Geoff says, "I'd say more than occasionally. So, what are you thinking about studying next term, then?"

She laughs, blushing slightly. "Speech, and literature, obviously. I'm quite intrigued by the criminal justice class, and now Professor Drusilla's no longer teaching, I'm interested in psychology. I'm going to see what Professor Dream offers in languages; I'd quite like to learn Arabic, or Farsi."

He raises an eyebrow. "Hmm...speech, literature, criminal justice, psychology, languages. Planning on going into politics?"

Elizabeth grins. "That's the plan at the moment, and I don't see it changing anytime soon," she says.

"Good for you! It's not a usual profession for women where I come from, but that's not the women's fault, I don't think," he says, laughing. "I suspect you'll do well in it, Elizabeth. You're well spoken and you have a quiet strength to your personality. I wish you luck."

Elizabeth smiles warmly at him. "Thank you, Professor," she replies. "There's still a shocking lack of women in politics, but hopefully by the time I've finished university, all that will have changed."

"I hope so. I've had a couple of experiences in my life that I suspect would have gone differently if it had been the women in charge of things instead of the men." He grins and takes a drink of the coffee.

"I'll expect to see your name on my registration list next term, then?"

Elizabeth laughs. "I think we've all had experiences like that," she says, drinking her own coffee.

"Most certainly," she nods. "it's a great class."
