Aesthetics of Badassery [Monday, Period One]

Bond's class actually had a teacher this week, and had been told to meet him at the Danger Shop, which was set up as a high-end bar, with a wide array of bottles behind it and the ubiquitous coffee and pastries on top of it.

"I apologise for my unavoidable absence last week, though I understand that Bobby performed admirably, and would like to state for the record that chess is one of the more badass games out there," Bond said, leaning against the bar. "But for those of you with differing opinions, I hope this week's is more to your satisfaction."

"Now, even if you have no interest or desire in consuming alcohol, which should be all of you, given you're underage in this state, the fact remains that having well rounded knowledge of the various kinds of alcohol, be they wines, beers, or in today's case, spirits, will improve your badass credentials in the eyes of many, especially if you are able to pull off that trick of being able to not only name the kind of drink in a blind tasting, but also to narrow down where it came from." Not that Bond had ever tried impressing anyone like that. Not that could be proved anyway.

"So today you'll be experimenting with making cocktails, there are refrence guides if you want to try existing recipes, or you can attempt to devise your own. Since the drinks are all simulated, there will be no actual alcohol content in anything you try." It would probably be wrong on a number of levels for him to give them real drinks, and besides they already had Caritas for that. "This exercise is merely so you can understand how various tastes work or don't work together."

"So whiskey never tastes good? I've got an apple martini," Bobby told her, offering her his glass. "I liked the green."

Caroline was no stranger to sharing strange drinks and sipped it for taste. "Mmm, who knew you'd end up with the girliest drink ever?"

He frowned at her. "...this is girly? But it's apples! How are apples girly?"

"It's pretty and almost sweet," she pointed out. "Guys tend to be anti colorful and tasty drinks. They like pain and grossness. It's why you guys fail at stuff like keeping your laundry under control and food in the fridge." This was obvious, no?

"I don't like pain and grossness." But then he and Jack had also done laundry voluntarily on a Saturday night.

"Huh." Caroline looked at him for a moment and wondered if Jake was seriously wrong. Like seriously. "I never considered that. You know, I like to think I have excellent gaydar, but then, my mom didn't and look where that got her."

Bobby totally missed that particular implication. "Where did it get her?"

"Divorced and dealing with me on her own other than one weekend a month." Speaking of, she so needed to call her dad sometime.

"I'm sorry. My mom too," Bobby shared. "Well, not the divorced part cause our dad died." He didn't seem to be too worried about that. "I don't get what you meant."

"I meant my dad has a boyfriend," she supplied. "Sorry if that was vague. I'm used to the whole world knowing."

"Oh. Yeah, so does my uncle," Bobby said with a shrug. Give him a moment...another one... "Wait, do you mean? I don't want a boyfriend."

"Are you sure?" Caroline was giving him a very careful look. "You are kind of...different in that smart and clean way."

"No, I'm pretty sure I'm just weird," Bobby told her.

"Well, you'll know for sure once you have you own girl to question about her underwear. Oh! Speaking of which, how were your dates?" He probably didn't like the way she winked when she said that. Most people didn't.

"I've dated a girl before!" he protested. "Well, I mean, she kissed me a lot in the backroom, and I liked it." And then his mom and Jack made her break his heart.

Bobby eyed her. "YOu could've told me!"

"You kissed a girl?" Caroline was weirdly surprised to hear that. He seemed so...monk-like. "Trust me, had I known that, I would've prepared you more. Did you hook up with anyone?"

"Not everyone thinks I'm 12," Bobby said, his frown half a pout. "Hook up like... no. I think I'm too young. I wouldn't want the girl to get pregnant."

"Oh please, I thought you were 13, that's totally older and different," she insisted, making a face at his pout. "Also, there are condoms to stop pregnancy. So, who are we trying not to knock up?"

"Oh. No one here," he said, realising she'd misunderstood. "I mean, I would but. Uh. I think the dates went okay! No one threw their drink at me!"

Yeah, she was pretty well convinced he was slow with anything girl-related. It would've maybe been easier if he liked boys. "Bobby, I meant to ask who were your dates and are you going to see them again?" Obviously.

"Well, we go to school together so probably," Bobby told her. He was helpful. "But Lucrezia and a girl who looks like Kate but isn't and Kenzie and Petra who's kind of mean and ...some other girl. Lucrezia was pretty? She wore an old-fashioned dress."

Well that was interesting. "There's a girl who looks like Kate hanging around? Hmm...these don't sound promising. How do you feel about the old timey people?"

"Yeah, she's Canadian though, and she likes school," he explained. "I don't want to discriminate based on time period. But it'd be weird if someone didn't believe in the moon landing."

"Weird," Caroline said, trying to wrap her mind around a potentially nice Kate. Creepy.

"On both counts. Seriously, how do people not believe in astronauts? Like, half my third grade class thought they'd get to go into space. That makes me a little more wary of the medieval type. I'm always freaked out, like they're in the middle of a play and my clothes are going to make it all anachronistic." She liked things to match their time periods, okay?

"Why would they be in the middle of a play if they were talking to you and you didn't know the lines?" Bobby asked wonderingly.
