Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

In order to give people a place to get away from the traffic jam of the buffet and information tables, most of the chairs and tables had been set up further out on the lawn, away from the school building. The bonfires were going strong, and there was plenty of room for everyone to sit down and enjoy themselves. Assuming they weren't too busy still trying to figure this place out.

[OCD is up! This is the FIRST post for general mingling. Please use this post first, if your browser can handle the comment load. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here and there's more room for mingling here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Anduin had seen the food table, but he hadn't gotten anything to eat yet. He was far too busy taking in his surroundings with an unapologetic look of wonder. He hadn't known what to expect from this place - his father had told him next to nothing except that he would be safe here - but so far, aside from the mistake that had been made in his rooming situation, he was really impressed.

He'd probably be even more impressed once he ate but that might not come until later.

Seeing such an impressed look on someone's face almost made Ariel proud, as if she'd done something herself for it, but it was really just good old school pride as she smiled over at the boy and said, "Pretty nice, isn't it?"

Anduin was effectively pulled out of his stupor and smiled at the girl. "It's very nice," he said. "Does it all look so lovely on the inside as well?"

"It does," Ariel assured him with a nod and another smile. "It's beautiful, but, inside, it's much more personal and cozy. You're one of the new students, aren't you?"

"Oh, yes, how rude of me. I'm Anduin," he said, with a small bow. "It's a pleasure to meet you."

"I'm Ariel," she said, reveling in the chance to meet his bow with a curtsy. She'd never get sick of those. "It's so nice to meet you, too, Anduin! Are you excited?"

[identity profile] littlelionlad.livejournal.com 2011-01-03 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
"I'm very excited, actually. I've never been to a school before," he said. "And I've never been this far away from home either. It's all a bit...well, terrifying and exciting together."

"Oh, don't be scared," Ariel assured him, smiling to hear such an assessment. "It really is wonderful here, but I can see why you might feel that way if you've never really been far from home. But how great to get out and see what else there is in the world! There's so much. I know I couldn't wait to see more than where I'm from..."

"Neither could I. I've always dreamed of getting to explore other places." He'd just wanted it to be under better circumstances. "My father is very protective though. Sending me here is a big step for him."

"Welcome to the island," Ender said upon approach (and after a quick dart of his eyes to see if he could pick up on any name tags that might have proclaimed him as someone he used to know, or a variant, or a relative. He looked familiar.) "Are you settling in so far?"

"I...think so. For the most part," Anduin said, still reeling a little from all the unexpected aspects of this new school. "It's been an interesting day so far, let's just put it that way."

"It has a habit of being for anyone who just got here," Ender said. The light, friendly expression was still on his face. "Where are you from?" he asked, not about to make Anduin's sense of reeling worse.

"I'm from Stormwind. In a place called Azeroth," he said, having learned to add that part. "It's, well, nowhere close to here, I think."

"Most places most of the people here are from are nowhere close to here." Yes, Anduin definitely reminded him of someone, but only fleeting, in passing. "It's the differences that are the most interesting. What's it like?"

Re: General Mingling [Spring 2011]

[identity profile] littlelionlad.livejournal.com 2011-01-02 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)
"Oh, Stormwind is amazing," Anduin said, grinning almost immediately. "It's a fairly large city, and what I've seen of the town here reminds me a bit of it. The streets aren't very wide and there's lots of little shops and houses and the most beautiful cathedral, and everyone's sort of all together, like the mages, and the dwarves, and they all make their spaces their own but we're all part of the same place." He blushed a little when he realized he'd been babbling. "Sorry, I think I might be a little homesick. And a little biased too. It's, um, going to be my kingdom someday."

Ah, the age-old 'what's it like' - always very useful if you wanted to get to know people, or at least figure out if they were doing okay. "It's fine," he said, "You're in a new place. It must be a little jarring, even if it's reminiscent of home."

"It is jarring. I've never been this far from home before," Anduin admitted. "How long have you been at the school?"

"You seem to be new," Bruce said as he approached Anduin. He couldn't help but catch the look on the new boy's face, and at this point in his Fandom career, he realized that could lead to some interesting information. "Hello, I'm Bruce."

Re: General Mingling [Spring 2011]

[identity profile] littlelionlad.livejournal.com 2011-01-03 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
Anduin turned and gave Bruce a polite smile. "I'm Anduin," he said. "And yes, I just arrived today. Are you new as well?"

Re: General Mingling [Spring 2011]

[identity profile] willbethenight.livejournal.com 2011-01-03 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
"Been here for a year, actually," Bruce said. "So I guess I'm still newer than some people."

Re: General Mingling [Spring 2011]

[identity profile] littlelionlad.livejournal.com 2011-01-03 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
"But not as new as I am," Anduin said. "This place isn't at all what I imagined. Then again, I didn't have much information to work from, but still."

Re: General Mingling [Spring 2011]

[identity profile] willbethenight.livejournal.com 2011-01-03 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
"What were you imagining? Something a little more school-like rather than a castle?" Bruce asked.

Re: General Mingling [Spring 2011]

[identity profile] littlelionlad.livejournal.com 2011-01-03 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
"I certainly wasn't imagining a castle. It looks a lot more like home than I thought," Anduin said. "I've never been to a school before. My education has always been one-on-one, so this is rather exciting." Even if he was getting homesick.

Re: General Mingling [Spring 2011]

[identity profile] willbethenight.livejournal.com 2011-01-03 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
"I'd been tutored for years before coming here, too," Bruce said. Now Bruce was curious if Anduin was from the past or a medieval world, because those were generally the only ways a castle would be that familiar. "You should get used to it pretty quickly. The classes are fairly small, and the teachers tend to be fairly hands-on."

Re: General Mingling [Spring 2011]

[identity profile] littlelionlad.livejournal.com 2011-01-03 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
"Oh, that sounds excellent. I have to admit, I'm not entirely sure what classes my father signed me up for," Anduin said. "Hopefully, I'll enjoy them." He wondered if Bruce was some kind of noble to have tutors as well. He certainly carried himself like someone who wasn't poor.
