Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

In order to give people a place to get away from the traffic jam of the buffet and information tables, most of the chairs and tables had been set up further out on the lawn, away from the school building. The bonfires were going strong, and there was plenty of room for everyone to sit down and enjoy themselves. Assuming they weren't too busy still trying to figure this place out.

Warren had kind of agonized over his options today. Wings, or no wings? Maybe just sit the picnic out entirely? But guts had prevailed, and so he'd gone the honest route, wings folded over his back.

He was, however, standing with his back to a tree, so they'd be slightly less obvious at a glance, and he was wearing the bracelet that Karla had given him for Christmas, so he could hide them in a hurry if anything went wrong.

For now? He'd found coffee. Sweet, life-giving coffee.

And see, Ramona had been carefully trying not to stare, but it totally looked like that kid over there had wings. Wings. She'd seen some weird shit, but that was new. Todd, after all, hadn't needed wings to fly.

So she moseyed over, trying not to look too hard. "Hey," she said, waving a hand slightly. "Are you new, too, or one of the tenured kids who get to watch the rest of us flail around?"

"Hey," Warren echoed, smiling up from his coffee and offering the girl a little nod of his head. "I've got about a year on you already, actually. But I think I'm here more for the free coffee than for the watching people flail around, if that's alright?"

He really wasn't much for schadenfreude, for whatever reason.

"I'm Warren."

"Ramona," she said with a tiny smile. "And you know, I think I actually appreciate that attitude. Free coffee is a perfect reason to show up anywhere, I think."

Seriously, trying so, so hard not to stare at the wings. Maybe they were just, like, decorative, and he just dressed weird. They just looked so real.

Warren caught the direction of her gaze, and offered her a little, sheepish smile. Maybe he should have hidden them after all? But too late to worry on that, too much.

"I'm sure people have warned you about the weird by now," he offered, toasting her with his coffee cup and a little shrug of his shoulders, one that caused his feathers to ruffle, just a bit.

"I've seen my share of weird, but this place wins," Ramona decided, raising her eyebrows in mild disbelief at that feather-ruffling. "My ex is a teacher here and he's suddenly like ten years older than me. That's new."

A pause, and then, "And sometimes people fly at home, but you're the first guy I've ever seen with wings."

"I'm the first guy a lot of people have ever seen with wings," Warren offered, and then punctuated that statement with a mouthful of coffee. "And the weird timeline thing... I don't know if I'll ever get used to that one, myself. My best friend here knew me before I ever showed up, and I had... pretty much no idea who in the world he was."

Poor Bobby.

"Poor thing," Ramona offered. "There's a lot of that going around, though. I just met a girl from 1914 who asked if someone had done something to my head. And if I was from another planet."

"That's not the weirdest question you could have been asked," Warren laughed, shaking his head. "I get a lot of 'are you an angel,' mostly."

A pause.

"I'm not."

Just to make certain that was clear.

"When are you from, then?"

Well, Bobby certainly wasn't going to think anything odd of the wings. Even though he could understand Warren's train of thought, given his own current state of dress- he didn't need the winter jacket he was currently sporting, but was wearing it for the sake of fitting in.

"Heads up, Third." Was that a doughnut sailing Warren's way to herald Bobby's arrival? Yes, yes it was. Hopefully he had a hand free to catch it.

Warren's head did, in fact, snap up, but not in time to catch the doughnut, so much as lift his cup to protect his face, so that the food bounced harmlessly to the ground again.

"Bobby! Hey!"

Poor doughnut.

"We are going to have to work on your reflexes," Bobby declared solemnly. "That poor doughnut did not deserve that fate." It deserved to be eaten! Eaten!

"Well, there's always the ten second rule," Warren offered. "And it's not so bad if it fell into the snow, right? Snow's clean."

He hoped that snow was clean!

If not... meh. Healing factor.

"Well, at least you're logic's up to par," Bobby smirked. "It's a start."

"I've had a year of having you as a best friend in order to kick my brain into gear in that regard," Warren laughed, stooping down to pick up the doughnut. Really, he could just buy more, but it was the principle of the matter, at this point. "If my logic is broken at this point, then I'm pretty hopeless, don't you think?"

"Hey," Warren protested, dusting his doughnut off before giving it an experimental dunk into his coffee. "If I'm hopeless, at least I'm well-practised at it, I think!"

That had to count for something!

There was a Warren. And he was standing in front of a tree. Which meant if she was sneaking up behind him, he wouldn't notice right?

Well, there was only one way to find out. Karla was determined to see if she could bury her hands in his wings before he knew she was there.

There was a Warren! And a Warren had a coffee, and a coffee was an amazing thing right now.

And so if there was sneak sneak sneaking going on... Well, he hadn't noticed it, no.

Mmmmm, coffee.

Good! There were going to be other things for Warren to notice in a minute or so anyway.

Say, the way someone just slid their hands into his wings and was pressing their lips against the side of his neck. As Karla was doing now.

Warren nearly jumped ten feet straight up, but managed to refrain from that reaction, and gave way into a soft laugh and slightly ruffled feathers, instead.

"Hey there," he said, not turning around. "I'm really going to hope that you're my girlfriend, because this is going to be really, really weird if you aren't."

He was grinning as he glanced down at her.

Warren was grinning as he reached his arm back, twisting himself around and moving them both into one very dramatic dip-and-kiss.

... He'd seen it in a movie somewhere, and kind of always wanted to try it!

"How much trouble am I in?"

Grin.

"After a kiss like that?" Karla asked, unable to keep the dreamy smile off her face. "None at all. Well, assuming there are more of those in my future."

It had been fun. He was absolutely planning on doing that again in the future, yes.
