Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

In order to give people a place to get away from the traffic jam of the buffet and information tables, most of the chairs and tables had been set up further out on the lawn, away from the school building. The bonfires were going strong, and there was plenty of room for everyone to sit down and enjoy themselves. Assuming they weren't too busy still trying to figure this place out.

"New York," she said, offering a small smile. "Not as exciting as another planet, sadly."

"Also New York," Warren replied, returning the smile. "Just slightly in the future. They still don't have hover-cars a couple of years from now, in case you were wondering."

Sometimes, Warren thought he was kind of witty? Ignore that.

"You know, people are awful casual about their time-travel around here," Ramona observed. "Though that's sad, about the hover-cars. I always figured that's how I'd know it was the future."

"Well, it took me about a year to get this casual," Warren offered. "I mean, I'm used to seeing some pretty weird things, but people jumping back in time, that was new."

Because Warren was from the movieverse.

"Same here," Ramona said with a nod. "Time travel is totally new, though people with powers are not. And apparently this place works differently from home in more general ways, or so I'm gathering."

"Like how it isn't New York?"

That was the big thing that Warren had noticed. No traffic congesting the streets below. No ridiculous crime rate. No Starbucks.

Not that he'd ever really had a chance to appreciate Starbucks.

"It's not so bad, though. Usually there's something going on, and if the island does get boring, there's the mainland, too." A pause. "People aren't used to powers on the mainland, though. So... probably best to be careful if you have any."

"I don't think I do, but I keep saying things to people and they give me weird looks," Ramona said pensively. "Like how vegan people are psychic. Apparently that's not a thing here."

That kind of got a weird look out of Warren too. Sorry, Ramona.

"We have plenty of psychics around here," he offered, "but I don't think any of them are vegans. There's an empathic vegetarian, but I don't know if that's entirely the same thing?"

Maybe it was sort of like the mysterious counterpoint to the psychic vegans?

"Maybe similar," Ramona mused. "Todd -- my ex, who's vegan -- said that it's really hard to be vegan, but as long as you stick to the rules, you get psychic powers, 'cause anyone can be ovo-lacto vegetarian, but vegan people are just better."

That was Todd's phrasing, anyway.

"Huh..." Warren blinked, kind of impressed. "I like my pepperoni pizza way too much to go vegan, I think."

And cream in his coffee. He took another sip.

"I think I'm about as set for powers as I ever really wanted to be, though."

And then some!

"Yeah, me too, but it's just weird that no one here knows it," Ramona replied with a shrug. "This guy earlier asked me about the weird stuff I have at home, but for me it's not weird at all, you know? So I wouldn't even know where to start."

"Yeah, I guess so, huh?" Warren frowned thoughtfully. "For us, a world without powers is kind of weird. It's all sort of relative."

Still. Psychic vegans. That was new.

"... People don't dress up in tights to fight crime in your world, do they?"

He still thought that part was weird.

"Only in cartoons," Ramona decided, shaking her head. "As far as I'm aware. That always seemed dumb to me. Tights? Not exactly protective."

"Thank you," Warren said, looking kind of stupidly relieved. "I have a friend who's been trying to get me into some for the better part of a year, now."

He would fight crime in sensible clothes, if it came to that!

Leather, at least!

"Your friend should invest in sturdier fabrics," Ramona advised. "I mean, I rip my tights running for the bus, sometimes, let alone fighting."

"I'm way more comfortable in jeans," Warren agreed. "Not as aerodynamic as tights, sure, but at least I don't have to worry about them falling apart if I scuff the knee out of them or something."

"Plus they're more protective," Ramona added. "Tights are barely any kind of armor. Ballerinas wear them. Jeans were created because cowboys needed something sturdy to wear. Cowboys."

"Cowboys riding horses all day long," Warren agreed. "They totally have the right idea, I think."

Take that, Xavier!

"Tights are just... tight." He wrinkled his nose. "They're more for showing off than really doing anything in."

"Agreed," Ramona said solemnly. "If I'm going to be kicking ass, I should definitely be doing it dressed like I ride a Harley or something. Something durable."

"Something made to counter road rash." Warren could not see any flaw in this logic. "Instead of something thin enough to practically highlight the most effective places to punch someone to get them on their knees."

Because how could you miss that, in a skintight bodysuit? How?
