Detention, Early Saturday Morning

Zoe had hoped that she'd be able to get through the rest of semester without having to deal with anyone getting detention, but, as usual, some of the boys had to ruin things by fighting in class.

Instead of doing it in private like sane individuals, of course. Grace was definitely going to learn better than that when she got older.

She'd left havdwavey messages for Percy and Nico to meet her in the school's cafeteria, and was glad when both of them showed up, bright and early as requested. Apparently, they still had a few braincells left in their heads. "All right, come with me," she said, leading them back into the kitchen, and pointing to the dirty pots, dishes, and silverware stacked all over the counters. "These are the dishes from the school's Thanksgiving dinner. When they are all clean, you may leave. If I find even one dish broken, we will do this all over again next weekend. If there is bloodshed, we will do this all over again next weekend. Are we clear?"

She turned and left without waiting for an answer, perfectly certain that she had been clear. Plus, the smell of the two day old food was a little overwhelming, and she wasn't going to stick around in that kitchen any longer than she had to.

Percy...was just staring right now. He'd thought he'd gotten out of this. He thought he was free but no, now he was staring at piles and piles of dishes.

"This isn't fair," he griped, frowning.

"Don't get me started on fair," Nico grumbled, taking one look at the giant hoses hanging over the sinks crammed full of filthy dishes and knowing that somehow Percy would come up on top here. "Gods, you'd think the council would've dealt with this after the dinner."

"Why didn't they anyway? Didn't pilgrims clean back in the olden days?" Percy hadn't exactly been paying much attention in history class. It was just too boring of a subject.

"This is disgusting," Percy added, making a face. "I've seen monsters make less of a mess when you kill them."

Right, because Nico had ever gone to school before that he could remember. "The school probably got a discount making us do it," he reasoned, breathing through his mouth to avoid inhaling the strong odor. "Man, we should've brought Mrs. O'Leary to help."

"I could just let loose a stream of water and hope for the best," Percy offered, glancing at Nico. "Maybe it'd be powerful enough to wash the gunk free."

Nico picked up a pair of thick, bright yellow gloves and waved them at his cousin. "I can't see that ending at all badly for me."

"Well, I can control it, jerk," Percy said, reaching for his own pair of yellow gloves. "You think I'd just spray you for fun or something."

Actually, he might. It'd be funny.

"Remember you said that," Nico replied, smacking lightly at Percy's arm with a rubber glove. "Now the gloves I understand, but what's with the little net things?"

Percy's eyes fell on what Nico was talking about and he immediately started shaking his head. "No. No no no. We are not school lunch ladies. We don't need hair nets."

"Hair nets? How in Tartarus is that supposed to help us wash dishes?" Nico didn't think he'd ever heard of using hair for scrubbing purposes.

"It's so we don't get hair onto the dishes and stuff," Percy said grumpily, shaking his head. "People with longer hair wear them for sanitary reasons."

Percy glanced at Nico.

"Our hair isn't that long!"

"It's not like, girl-long or anything." Nico picked up a hair net in his now rubber-covered hands and stretched the thing in front of his face. "Seriously, we're supposed to wear this on our heads?"

"Yeah," Percy replied, one hand in a glove and one hand holding the hair net. "Is your hair falling out" Mine's not."

"Not that I've noticed. It's not like I take a count every night before bed, though." Nico stretched the elastic of his hair net to full potential between his fingers and considered where to aim the thing.

"If you don't wear it, I don't wear it," Percy said, going for solidarity when it came to these things. "Deal?"

[identity profile] deaths-demigod.livejournal.com 2010-11-27 04:08 pm (UTC)(link)
"Deal!" Meaning the trash bin was the happy receiver of one flying hair net. His pleasure in getting rid of the awful thing was short-lived as he turned back around and the piles of plates and things had not shrunk while they were prepping. "We might need to curse everyone who came to that dinner for this."

Percy's hair net followed Nico's and he was back to staring at the piles and piles of dishes. There were just so many.

"Would your skeleton guys wash 'em for you?"

Nico cocked his head to the side in total awe of an intelligent, valid idea coming out of Percy's mouth. "...I think so."

"It might be worth trying," Percy said because he so didn't want to put on this other yellow rubber glove. "What's there to lose?"

If anything, they'd just get more detention.

Nico left his on, almost liking how crazy they looked added to his usual black attire. "Now, it will make kind of a mess of the floor, but I can close that up after..."
